Summary - 13th march 2006 - Strolling around the birds market, flower market and the skyline of Hong Kong by night - pictures from the Avenue of Stars - Kowloon. Enjoy the pictures. Monkey and Bear.

A bus, a plane and three taxis later we were in Hong Kong. We spent three days here mostly just wandering about, going up to the Peak, catching trams and ferrys, visiting free museums, parks, markets etc. I managed to buy a new charger for my camera after mine was stolen from my checked in baggage at Bangkok Airport (Thailand so far being the centre of all world crime). Sara: I think the highlight was probably the science museum, not for any educational reason, but to try the fitness test. You will be pleased to know that we both have low blood pressure (almost too low) and my eye sight's going.... read more

Summary- the Kowloon Walled City Park, the Wong Tai Sin Temple and the Lei Cheng UK Tomb are off the beaten tourist track, but we think they are worth exploration. Also the Hau Wong Temple - 1730 - is worth visiting, but this temple is complete under construction. Start your tour of Kowloon City at Lok Fu MTR Station. Monkey and Bear - 12-03-2006. Lieve vrienden en vriendinnen, Kowloon - 12-03-2006. Here we go again.

In late February the Fulbright grantees, including those just having completed bachelor degrees, doctoral students, and senior scholars, from the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong congregated at my host university - The University of Hong Kong - for a 3.5 day conference and an optional trip to Macao. The conference was a very emotional experience for me. As was my time in Germany nine years ago, my time in Hong Kong now is full of highs and lows. I am grateful to have ten months to escape the humdrum of comfortable life. Here are some of the reasons why. Having the opportunity to hear about the varied projects that my fellow American Fulbright colleagues are engaged in was quite stimulating! We came to Hong Kong for Lara. I was never really fussed but luckily agreed to go and really enjoyed it too. Having been away for about 130 days now Lara is really missing people and life at home. Hong Kong is the perfect medicine for people home sick for London. There is so much to see and do here. The first thing that struck us both is the intensity of the consumerist, "bigger is better" feel of the place. It is impossible to walk from one building to another without going through enormous shopping arcades. Of course Lara was excited to point of wetting herself when she clapped eyes on the shoe shops. Number one on the agenda was to treat ourselves to a big Western meal. All the way through SE Asia we have ... read more

It’s been a while since I’ve posted to this blog. So many things have happened that I hardly know where to start. But, as this blog is particularly designed to reflect upon my disability in relation to my time in Hong Kong, I offer the following. Since my last blog, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in several meetings - some sponsored by people from Hong Kong, others by officials from Macao, and one sponsored by Americans. When contemplating my trip abroad, I mentally prepared myself for the prospect of not being accommodated by officials in Asia, as disability issues are much less in the forefront here than in America. Let me further qualify that statement before I go on. I have met many young adults with disabilities and officials serving people with disabilities in Asia ... read more

Welcome to the place where East meets West! Hong Kong is a fantastic eclectic mix of different styles and cultures which is reflected in their way of life as well as their clothes and food! We were very lucky here as we turned up late without booking anywhere to stay and just decided to turn up at the first hostel we had found on the internet. It turned out to be a great location, cheap and clean! The first day was spent looking for a replacement camera for the one we lost. We searched high and low for something Mel was happy with and when we actually found it she changed her mind. Finally we did find a camera at a good price so we can now download pictures more easily...woopeee! We did loads of sightseeing. We ... read more

HONG KONG. Well the first thing that struck me driving over the border from Shenzen was the stacks of high rise flats all along the freeway. They looked terrible, such appalling living conditions. I expected to drive in there and just be blown away my big shiny buildings. I imagine that all the people that work in the restaurants and the markets live in these buildings. But anyway, I ended up finding one of the cheapest places in HK to stay, Chung King mansions on the Kowloon peninsula. After putting my bags down and having a shower I went to the one of the many Indian food places in my building and had chicken massala with naan and rice. Oh it was music to my mouth. So nice not to be eating noodles and this food ... read more
