Did another jaunt to the Islands first thing this morning. Hopped on the fast boat to Lamma Island, a small pleasant community half way between Hong Kong and Cheang Chau, (where I was the other day). I prefered this spot to Cheang Chau, it was a lot more chilled and relaxed, and is all in all very scenic, (except for the annoying power plant that always at the last minute manages to detract from the views). There are two towns on the Island, both of whose names I've forgotten, (bugger... I swore I'd bring my literature with me), but basically this morning I landed at one, and then walked across the island to the other, (took about an hour with little stops along the way). There's possibly the best beach I've seen so far on the ... read more

Right, listen up folks, if your ever in Hong Kong the best excursion you can do is the 'go racing' trip! I know what your thinking, we're not really into racing, we're not gamblers, WELL NEITHER AM I, but just trust me, this was such good value for money. To be honest when I woke up this morning I wasn't overly in the mood for it, I was still not firing on full thrusters after yesterdays over exhursion excursion, and just wasnt sure if a day spent doing something I normally wouldn't be seen dead at would help, especially as it required me to get dressed up more formally. But it proved just the ticket! I'd organised this via the internet before I went, and had pondered it for a number of days as the offer ... read more

Thankfully today turned out considerably brighter than yesterday, which was fortunate cos I had plans to go further afield. Packed up some gear and ventured down into town, crossed the harbour on the top deck of the Star ferry then jaunted round to pier 5 of the Outer islands ferry terminals to buy myself an island hopping pass. With that I boarded the ferry to Cheng Chau and set out for a days discovery. Cheng Chau, (meaning Long Island), is a good 50 minutes away through the busy harbour, giving you a good backwards glance at Hong Kong, much the way you imagine former British Governor Chris Patten probably watched it from the stern of Britannia back in 97 when the then colony reverted back to Chinese rule. It's a dumbell shaped island, with two rocky ... read more

Had to change my plans today! Was planning a days hiking to Lamma island but when it rains in Hong Kong IT POURS! Gotta say I was half expecting it, had been keeping an eye on the long range forcast for the past week and today was down for thunderstorms, (which would have been exciting), but instead the only thundering was the deluge of water coming out of the sky on to the vast assortment of umbrellas that have been running about the city. BUT AM I DOWNHEARTED? Not a bit of it! All I did was swap my Lamma plans with the thing I was intending to do on my last day. I went to Ocean Park! There are two amusement parks of merit in Hong Kong, the very new, (and much hyped), Disneyland, and ... read more

Well got here in one piece, AND WHAT A LONG JOURNEY IT WAS!!!!!! Finished work at 6pm Tuesday then train to Preston, train to Manchester Picadilly, train to Manchester airport, overnight in a hotel then Plane to Frankfurt and finally Jumbo Jet to Hong Kong, arriving here this morning at 10:15am. Not a comfortable journey, Lufthansa don't give much leg room, though to be fair they seem quite generous in handing out the free drink! Gotta say, (cos I'm a show off)... HOW CLEVER AM I! A few weeks ago, when I was trying to use up last years leave before this years started, I spent one Thursday sitting with my laptop in my dining room going over every minute detail of the Hong Kong leg of this trip and today it paid dividends. Everything worked ... read more

From the rather humid Hong Kong. Arrived here last night from Brisbane feeling a little less zombified than my previous visit. Once again took me a while to pluck up the courage to go to a restaurant but I met a couple of locals who kindly taught me some Cantonese. There was no stopping me after that. So here goes...... Nei Ho - Hello Do che - Thankyou Yat bui bear zhou ng goi - One beer please My last few days in Australia were spent relaxing and enjoying the last of the Aussie Sun! I went off to Noosa for 2 nights which was a very nice, chilled out spot. I was greeted each morning by Red and Green coloured Parrotts flying from tree to tree. Ive bumped into a few people more than once ... read more

As a stopping off point on our way to China, it was pretty hard to fault Hong Kong. A fusion of British capitalism and Chinese culture, the city has skyscrapers and shopping malls that sit alongside Chinese temples and food markets, whilst down in the harbors, traditional Chinese Sampans (albeit now just for tourism) ply their trade alongside luxury private yachts. We took in most of the main sites in Hong Kong, although none of them seemed to have the impact of the great outdoors we experienced in Africa. We took the cross harbour ferry, we took a Sampan ride at Aberdeen harbour, we took an old tram through Central and we took the peak tram up to Hong Kong's highest point. The overwhelming feeling you get is that Hong Kong is still an incredibly dynamic ... read more

Can't wait to post the picture with this entry title. The best part was the shop owner who made two lizards on a stick fight each other. I visted two temples today, actually one was a nunnery, and had two very different experiences. The first was a very old one in an area call Yau Mei Tei adjacent to a park where old men were playing Chinese chess. The temple is heavily used and for about $15-20 you can buy large incense coils that burn for 10 days and bring blessings to your family. The temple had the usual buddhist figures but it also seem to have smaller shrines tucked in here and there that reminded me of voodoo shrines but not creepy. There were tons of offerings... the usual fruit (apples, oranges, and i think ... read more

14/04/06 11:00 Bollocks !! Seems I arrived right on a public holiday !! Everything is shut until the 18th and I leave for Japan on the 17th. Confined to my prison cell of a room for another three nights. Seriously depressing, but at least I have my MP3 player and a couple of books for company. Starting to miss the UK a bit as at least at home I would have someone to talk to and my decks to play on. Keep checking my email, but no replies. Not surprising as I just realised it is 11am here so 4am back home !! Just got to hold out by looking forwardsd to Japan in a few days, but I think it is going to be a long few days. Guess it must be the Easter holidays ... read more

Sorry no pictures with this one but I don't have access to a USB port at this terminal. Only one jet-lagged day in Hong Kong so far. I fell asleep early so I didn't get down to the waterfront like I wanted to last night. I did go to the art museum, which was surprisingly hands on. I love traditional Chinese landscapes so it was great for me. And free on Wednesdays. I also walked around Tsim Sha Tsui where anyone can buy a Rolex. The hotel I am staying at is ....interesting. I will be changing to a different place tonight. Actually I almost just got another room yesterday afternoon because I discovered my room had no working AC. Another room would've only been another 20 bucks but I fell asleep. Now I can say ... read more
