Got up early and had dim sum with Goo-poh and her husband. Then Goo-poh took the bus with us to the airport. Hung out with Goo-poh until it was time to go; while we waited Goo-poh and Felicia talked with her dad on the phone. Finished watching King Kong on the flight back to Bangkok (we only got to see the first half or so on the way to HK).... read more

Day 4 (10th May 2006) ~ Smile was the universal language if you can’t speak like the locals Remarkable 洪利 Everybody was full of praise for dinner tonight over the simple HK fare of Wan Tun Noodles and Century Egg Congee @ 洪利. This was HK cuisine at its best, at prices all could afford. It may not be featured as one of the “must-eat” places in Lonely Planet. But going back there again night after night until the boss (we assume he was) could recognize us was living testimony that the “standard” was there. He made an effort to be friendly but with our half-past six Cantonese, we could only manage a few vocabularies and a few smiles. Most of the time, we were speaking to him in Mandarin while his reply was in Cantonese. ... read more

OK -- I'm pretty jet lagged so I'm gonna keep this as short as I can. After a speedy breeze through customs this morning, I rocketed over to the hotel using Hong Kong's swift, modern, and nearly silent rail system. Arriving at the Sheraton, I was sent to some special VIP check-in on the top floor. Must say, that got things off to a nice start. Thanks GAP, Inc!! And thanks to Ed we were booked in a room with an AMAZING panoramic view of Hong Kong Island. I've tried to capture it in these photos, but didn't quite do it justice. The dark picture is my attempt to catch the view from the SHOWER -- because the bathroom wall is all glass, as is the shower door, you can enjoy the view even while showering. ... read more

Day 1 ~ We've Just Begun (2006) Sunday, 7th May 2006 “I’m going to HK & Macau for 10 days!” “10 days!” I had raised the eyebrow of another fellow being. “This is way too long a duration for this Asian capital!” However, as the itinerary was done up, 10 days was barely sufficient to cover the 2 places really. Clare and I were here 4 years ago before I started school in University. And yes, this 06’ graduation trip helped to bring everything to a complete closure. 9.50am - We took an early flight in the morning of 7th May 2006 from the new budget terminal to Macau. I had barely enough sleep from the General Elections syndrome having stayed up late to catch the broadcast. It’s my 3rd time flying with Tiger Airways and ... read more

We spent our last moments at the Disney hotel having a splash in the piano shaped pool and on the little waterslide - cool fun. Checked out of Disney and transferred to the Kowloon Hotel. Had a bit of a look around the area Nathan Rd etc. An amazing amount of neon lights is what striked me the most. Me and the old boy hit the 7-11 and grabbed a few 500ml San Miguels - 2 for 17HKD - not bad. That kept us busy until tea time where we grabbed a bite in the food court of Sogo, the underground dept store. At night we boarded a boat for a harbour cruise and watched the Symphony of Lights - where all the buildings do a light show to music - and thoroughly enjoyed the generous ... read more

Our first impression of Hong-Kong was: It is very hot here The second we thought of Hong-Kong was: It is hot and very humid here Our third insight of Hong-Kong was when we were stranded in McDonald's 1/2 hr walk from the hotel. We understood where the humidity went - it becomes pouring rain in the evening. We were stranded in the rain. But don't let first impressions fool you. We were very impressed with the city. reminded Yaron of NYC. not only because of the architecture but also because of the big town feeling. a place you can find everything fast and everything moves at a fast pace. underground, museums, Meany people on the street cafes. it you have been to Manhattan/London/Malian or TLV you know who it is. Like they said on Pulp Fiction ... read more

Got up, packed, had leftover pizza for lunch. Got a taxi to Don Muang International Airport and were in Hong Kong around 6:45PM. We were met by Felicia’s goo-poh, her dad’s father’s cousin. She had Octopus Cards (for public buses, subways, etc.) for us and we all took the bus back to her 36th floor apartment in Kowloon. Goo-poh made dinner—it was so good. It rained all night…We were really lucky to have a place to stay because her older son’s family of 4 were staying at their apartment before we arrived; their apartment was being renovated and they just moved out the day before.... read more

We had a great flight with Air India, luckily we had the extra leg room seats so we both managed to sleep for half of the flight. We arrived at HK airport on Lantau at 6:45am; it was quite cloudy and very humid. We tried to kill some time at the airport because the hotel check in time wasn’t until 2pm, so obviously being starved of junk food for the past 7 months in Goa we headed straight to McDonalds for breakfast, two meals HK$35 (£2.65), bargain!!! We decided to get the bus to Kowloon where we had booked a room for the first two nights; it takes 1 hr and costs HK$33 each, it was a nice way to kill some more time and to get our first glimpse of the city. Our hotel, The ... read more

We are now in Hong Kong. We are staying in Kowloon which is across the harbor from Hong Kong Island. We arrived here on Thursday night. On Friday week looked around the area we are staying and also went down to the water front. On Saturday we took a ferry across to Hong Kong Island. We walked up to Victoria Peak. We waited there until after dark so look down at the city lit up at night. We took the tram down to the bottom. On Sunday we went to Ocean Park. Ocean Park has animals, rides, a cable-car, dolphin show etc. There are also excellent views from Ocean Park. Yesterday we took a boat trip around the harbor. Today we went to Lantau Island and saw the largest Budda in the world. - Matt... read more

This night after being stuck in Chungking Mansions we all decided we needed a bit of class - so we headed to Felix Bar which is in the poshest hotel in Hong Kong - with the most majastic views of the sky line! The lifts were nicer than our room, so we spent a while going around in them...then blagged our way into Felix . Rounded off the night with some drinks bought at the local 711 .... read more
