Holy Toledo! We are incredibly behind on the travelblog. And after we started off so strong! Maybe it's actually a good thing - vacation mode isn't supposed to involve any deadlines or guilt about the stuff you're not doing, right?! Anyway, enough remorse - time to put the nose down and blog away until we get caught up. I apologize in advance to you all if you get a barrage of emails notifying you that we've posted several new blogs. Consume them at your own risk (mainly to your productivity :) ... So, anyway, here's a little taste of our Hong Kong experience... We actually only spent two short stopovers there over the last few weeks, but it seemed like it deserved it's own "Honorable Mention". We first arrived back on March 20th, fresh off the ... read more

ML got me flowers for our anniversary, off to a great start. The flight was easy. Flying first class with a sleeper seat is a nice way to travel. Arrived last nght about 8PM and went for drinks at the Intercontinental Hotel which is right along the harbor. We watched the laser light show which was great. I'll try and get pics of that too. ... read more

Several events have occurred in the past week that I’d like to share with my blog readers. On the 24th of March I was asked to participate in the quarterly meeting of the Disability Action Committee of the University of Hong Kong. After the committee members learned a little about me as I introduced myself, I was appointed for the entirety of my stay in Hong Kong to the Committee. This appointment was a great encouragement to me, since I have served on many such committees and/or boards in the States. I have a sense of what is expected of a member of such a body, and I hope I can both contribute to this Committee and, more importantly, learn from its members and the decisions they adopt. The DAC is a subcommittee of the Equal ... read more

We're sitting here at the computer uploading a bunch of photos for you guys. We finally got some on a disc. We hope everyone likes them. It may be a bit before we can do it again considering the photo technology in Thailand and India. Fingers crossed that we can keep this up. So since shopping we checked out Victoria Harbour and went up to Victoria Peak on a little trolley thing. This was in our 1000 things to see before you die book so why not? It was pretty cool and we ended up hiking down a very steep hill to a little lake and yes, hiked it back up. 4.5 km later and our legs were burning. It was great to hike through all that beauty and we're getting in better shape. We also ... read more

I hear that the early flowers in Illinois are blooming and that predictions of severe blizzards were thwarted by other nature. I do miss the heady joy that sweeps through me at the heralding of spring when I live in a climatological zone that has four distinct seasons. Having the opportunity to live in the tropics for almost a year fills me with wonder too. I’d like to describe it for you. The weather is so much more mild here. Hong Kongers cancel engagements because of a little rain or increased windiness. I want to tell them about wading through snowstorms, shuffling along upon sheets of ice, and dawning layers upon layers of clothing to guard against artic winds. So, when they complain about a little misty rain, I just smile and thank God that I ... read more

This is what we hear as we walk down the mean streets of Kowloon, here in Hong Kong. They do a few things well apparently: suits, fake Rolexes, fake bags, and...hash. The hash is usually quietly spoken after the boisterous claim for the other items, so that's nice. No, we got to Hong Kong on Friday after a mere 28 (the train company says 25...I guess it's fuzzy math) hour train ride from Shanghai. We're actually pretty good at these long distance journeys by now. It doesn't really faze us anymore. All you need is a good book, a deck of cards, peanut butter, and a big bowl of ramen noodles, and you're set. Once we arrived, we checked into our "Mansion." Many of the hostels here in Kowloon are in these big, run down, buildings ... read more

Summary - Today is a very rainy day so we visited the Hong Kong Historical Museum. Here you find a permanent show over Hong Kong, called THE HONG KONG STORY. It starts with the geological situation of Hong Kong 400.000.000 years ago and goes to the year 2000. It is a great museum with lots of lightshows and you learn a lot of things about Hong Kong and her surroundings. The pictures are a impression of the museum. It is really fun to visit this museum. In the evening we went to Sha Tin Town Hall and visited the ballet THE WORLD OF SUZIE Wong. A fantastic ballet and show by the Hong Kong Ballet. Monkey and Bear. Lieve vrienden en vriendinnen, De laatste twee dagen is het weer helaas omgeslagen en is het behoorlijk regenachtig ... read more

We arrived in Hong Kong ( for the second time on the 16th March), and my other best friend Charlene from home came in from Heathrow a few hours before us. The weather was really muggy and it was quite humid but we were just soo excited to have someone join us on our adventure. Getting to the hotel was no problem - the airport ubs dropeed us off right outside and at last we had a little bit of Luxury! We stayed at the Concourse Hotel in Kowloon- not one of the most eye appealing areas but it was very close to the markets which is what is most important! We spent 5 days and4 nights rushing round, shopping, seeing the sites, sampling the local cuisine and sampling the nightlife that HK is known for. ... read more

Had fun in Hong Kong though not as much fun as the rest of asia. We stayed in Mong Kok which is on the Kowloon side (there are 2 main parts of Hong Kong seperated by the sea) in Hotel Concourse which seemed very posh compared to most of the places we've been staying! Patrices friend Charlene came to visit us which was really good. We did loads of shopping (shoes for about $50, which is about 4 pounds!) as it was our last stop in Asia so shoppings still cheap! We'd heard there was really good nightlife in Lan Kwai Fong so on our second night we got the tube to Kwai Fong but there seemed to be nothing there. We were asking everyone where all the nightlife and the restaurants were but no one ... read more

I’ve now had the opportunity to ride the bus three times in Hong Kong by myself. Although the first ride was quite traumatic, the second and third ones were without incident, I’m happy to say. In order to represent both sides of this issue, I’ll start with the positives I’ve discovered thus far. I have committed to volunteering to teach English at the Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired on Friday mornings. The School is located near Hong Kong U; the bus ride is only about ten minutes. Here is the route I take to find the bus stop. My breakfast comes at anywhere between 8:10 and 8:30 a.m. On Fridays I wake at 7:00, get ready, and wait for my breakfast. Immediately after I finish eating and drinking my tea or coffee, I ... read more
