Ni Hao. Time for some photos to keep you all amused, prize for the first person to work out who Chiang Kai-shek is. Beijing is vast, went and saw the wall today and just stuffed my face with some Peking duck, very tasty. Mind you the silk worm I ate last night was rather good too, however I decided against the locusts, they looked a little too crunchy. Jelly fish is a bit like eating an elastic band, strange. And the Hot pot we had in Cheng du had seahorses in it. They eat anything over here. ... read more

Distances in West-China are huge. So transport is often overnight. From Kashgar to Urumqi a fast (22h) connection is by sleeper bus. I haven't seen this kind of bus before. It contains three rows of bunk beds. A single bed is not to big, the feet are in a box below the head of the man in front. But it's still a lot more comfortable than a bus seat. Even nicer is going by train, hard sleeper. This possibility I used from Urumqi to Beijing. You get a good, long enough, clean and quite comfortable bed. And you can really sleep, the train is modern and smoothly supported. For having your instant noodle soup, a cup of tea or a porridge there is hot water onboard. So while the desert was passing outside I enjoyed my ... read more

When I was a kid I used to have this inexplicable urge, whenever I saw someone holding a newspaper out in front of them, to swat it out of their hands while they were intently reading. It wasn't anything menacing, I just thought it was funny-- kinda like scaring someone from behind a closed door. But no one ever really saw the same humour in it that I did. I did it to my Dad all the time, whereupon he would promptly imprint his Dexters into my ass. Well I haven't had the urge to do that in many years now....that is, until I moved to NY. There's a brief moment in the day when I think it would be fair for me to indulge in that small idyllic pleasure of my youth. It's during the ... read more

It's been almost a month sans update. Since the October break when I wrote last, I've stayed pretty busy. Between teaching and going out with friends, October has managed to fly by. In the last month... I spent a couple of nights in a row and an entire day hanging out with the band in their apartment while they were packing up. I got some late-night Filipino lessons and ate some delicious food. Yummmmm. Watched a ton of movies... "Like oooh my god, I am sooo pissed, I think I'm gonna have a bf." "What a beautiful chocolate man!" Philip inspired me to paint my toenails black, and Rach left my "iced tea" in the freezer a bit too long so it really was ICE tea. Tried my best but tears fell and they were the ... read more

Jian Feng is the mini-Mt. Fuji that watches over our university, and this weekend I finally mustered up the will to trek up. Hiking buddies were fellow distinguished academics Jenny and Dave; we make quite a set. They are retired school teachers from Darwin, Australia, who wound up in that sunny local after they ran out of money on their round the world trip from the UK, and just never left. They taught in several rural Aboriginal communities so in addition to really unique perspective, the experience has the added bonus of providing them with many a delightful story about a crock encounter, misadventure with a rogue wallaby or comical boomerang moment. Poor things, though, the English vocabulary re-education that they have to give me on a daily basis must be exhausting. Yes, the mountain. Rumors ... read more

Today was the day for visiting the Potala Palace (winter residence for the Dalai Lama) and also his summer residence the Norbulingka all just East of central Lahsa. The Potala Palace, although very impressive was stacked out with tourists (Chinese were particularly pushy) and no photos were allowed in side but I did take a few door shots! When we got to the Norbulingka it was set in woods/parkland so a very nice chilled afternoon, as with most of the world it's Autumn here so the trees are shedding their leaves and it was great to walk around away from the hustle and bustle of town and beggars/pilgrims. Early evening (which became our ritual) a group of us all went to a cafe overlooking Bakhor and people watched! That evening we went to a very funky ... read more

mon Oct 24 I had nine students in my first yoga class in China today. it is described as a flow class but the equence was a modified astanga first series. i do my best to transcend the language barrier by demonstrating as i speak, delivering instructions with confidence and maintaining a sensitivity to the needs of each student. i am able to deliver a few commands in chinese to the amusement of sean, the studio director, who is taking the class and who is almost fluent in the language. I see that it was challenging for the most part for most of the students but carry on as i know that challenges are nothing new to these people. i am also encouraged by the discipline of the predominantly female class, their focus, and the ... read more

Mon Oct 24 I happen upon the fabled West Lake, one of china’s main tourist attractions during an early afternoon stroll. I am surprised to discover it here one block away from the studio. Shimmering in the afternoon glare, tourists saunter along its edge. Tourist boat operaters wait patiently for the next client interested in taking the trip to the manmade island across the water. The usual curio shops, common to any tourist destination, dot the esplanade. An old man intercepts me from behind greeting me and inviting conversation. I am startled and a bit humbled at the same time by his presence and his interest in me. He struck me as more than just another curious native. His English is functional and we are able to communicate. His face is ageless, his comportment reverent and ... read more
