We landed in Guilin all nice and refreshed, so as usual it was time to play the tout lottery. This is much the same as the bus lottery only you pick a tout who "find you nice good room" and see what happens. We couldn't be arsed playin that morning so we decided to get out the lonely planet bible (which is much like the real bible in that its a miracle if it does you any good) and to play the taxi lottery instead. We went to the town centre and amazingly couldn't find anywhere. Then one of the touts who jumped in a taxi to follow us said he could sort us a room, DFR. Quick shit, shower and shave and we were out again, hood tried to get some money out of an ... read more

What can one say about spending three days on a Chinese train? By the time we reached Beijing, Gerry and I had grown accustomed to the constant guttural hacking, noodle slurping, toilet stench and crying babies accompanying perhaps every train in this vast country. The train was hardly full, and yet it seemed like we were all crawling over each other every time we got out of our tine beds. Besides the obscene amounts of book reading we did, most of the trip included looking out of the window at the countryside whizzing by. The color scheme of China seems to be different than other countries. It included lots of grays, dark reds, greens yellows and black. About every 10 minutes we would pass another pollution belching factory. I have actually been pretty taken aback at ... read more

Whoops I forgot to put this one in! I think more people were looking at the strange westerner holding a Koala up for this photo that at the actual warriors. Pretty amazing detail in these guys hey! It took over four hours to walk the great wall, we nearly got thrown off of the side by guards when someone didn't want to pay one of the toll. Don't mess with those dudes man!!!... read more

We just made it back from Huangshan, an amazing mountain peak located in Anhui province in east central China. We had never heard of the place before coming here, but along our journey had heard so many people talking it up that we were ripe to go. There's no rail connecting Wuhan (where we were last staying) to Huangshan so we had to bus 4 hrs to Jinliang, 3 hrs. to Jingdezhen, train 3 hrs to Tunxi, and minibus an hour to Tangkou. A lot of work to get here, but it was well worth it. Chinese poets and painters throughout centuries have found inspiration in these mountains, and emperors have praised the site to the heavens. And if that don't convince you, parts of that ky-rah-TAY flick about them Crouching Tiger Dragons was filmed here. ... read more

Well, its hard to believe but today is our last day in Lhasa. We leave tomorrow morning for Chongqing which is south of Chengdu and the start of the Yangtse river cruise. The past 2 days we just roamed the streets of Lhasa enjoying all the sites. We also found out for $.70 per kilo we could ship all our cold weather gear to Shanghai, so we included a Tibetan horn and a few other misc items... 33 lbs lighter, our packs are back to where they should be @ 20lbs! We spent 2 days in Samye staying at the Samye Monastery guesthouse. We rode the pilgrim bus which was fascinating. The evening was very quiet and we enjoyed just walking around the area. The countryside reminded us of Idaho. Its been nice to see the ... read more

In china we discovered a new game, its called the bus lottery and and works like this. You pay some guy at a desk a load of money to get a bus from one city to the other and he shows you a load of photos of a brand new, up to date, top of the range with all mod cons bus that can do everything short of fly and assures you that its VIP. Then you go to the bus station and wait. and wait, and wait and pray that thats not your bus. but it usually is. The morning we got the bus after the yanzee river we did shit at the bus lottery, you could say that between the 5 of us not one of our numbers turned up. This bus was shit, ... read more

Asia » China » Xinjiang » Kashgar October 18th 2005

Kashgar is the first major city in China when you come from Pakistan. At first it looks very Chinese. Big modern buildings, broad streets. One very big east-west street and one very big north-south street. Transport system is well organized, Chinese Supermarkets everywhere. A huge statue of Mao Zedong at the main street. But most of the people do not look Chinese at all. They look like people from central Asia. And when you take a second glance you can find signs of their culture everywhere. This becomes especially obvious at the markets. Kashgar is famous for its Sunday market. When I visited it I was a bit disapointed because it was not so special, not especially big (maybe due to the season) and mostly Chinese. Not the variety of things and goods I hoped to ... read more
