Have my midterms right now and I think I might be failing all four of them...even the instructions are in chinese which doesn't make it easier. But I've heard that nothing really happens if you fail apart from that you need a really high percentage on the next exam to pass. Oh well... The exams a divided into three days and now I only have the speaking test left. Gonna meet my language partner tonight and practise because I really need it. My pronunciation is horrible it seems like. Otherwise I'm spending tons of time in a coffeshop called Cava that is really nice but a bit expensive. We are there at least three hours a day and our record is ten hours straight... I go there to study and usually Dan comes along to practise ... read more

Pictures from around the Yangshuo area. Well it took all that time to get the pictures downloaded. Spending the week in Yanshuo and having a great time. It is quite the oasis with beautiful scenery (this was the scenery we expected along the Yangtse), great food, and a very nice place to stay with a balcony looking over the river. We will write more later.... read more

I believe yesterday (November 1st) was All Saint's Day but don't quote me. I had a really kick ass day. In the morning I woke up to take a bus over to Victory Square. After a little while Julia, Shina, Russell, Cat and Nancy all met me there and we went down underground. Victory Square is a huge underground shopping mall. There's a bowling alley down there so we got to play two games for a total price of 12 kuai per person ($1.50). It was a pretty normal bowling alley. At first our two teams were playing against each other (Julia, Cat and I versus Russell, Nancy and Shina). Our team lost by 5 points total. Then Nancy had to leave to meet some of her friends and we each played individually against each other. ... read more

Arriving in China was cool. Always going to be the highlight of our trip, it was nice to reach here at last. First stop was Kunming, which although there wasnt much to do, was a nice with a friendly atmosphere, and a good place to get our first taste of chinese life and the delicious chinese dumplings! A couple of days spent, then on to Dali. Dali is a purposely built tourist town (by the governement) and is very nice and pretty with good chinese architecture, though it feels slightly like disney china. Another couple of days here spent mostly shopping for the warm clothes needed for our himalaya expidition. Similar to Dali, was Lijiang, only bigger. Again very pretty, we shopped again and saw an ethnic minority show/dance which was a bit dodgy. Unfortunately we ... read more

We left the town of Sakya early in the morning and after many a pee/photo stop and the drivers trying to waste our time mending cars/picking up people we eventually got to Rhonpu Monastery which was close to the base of Everest Base Camp. When we arrived, the sun was setting and luckily I managed to get a few shots before it all went very quiet, dark and freezing!! During the night, I think partly bacause of the breathing and cold outside of the sleeping bag, in our dorms it was negative temps I woke up and looked out the window, the stars were amazingly bright too! In the morning the kitchen staff weren't up so rather than wait for them to light a fire to make tea, I set off infront of the group with ... read more

The actual reason for my stopover in Xi'an was the nearby Tomb of Qin Shi Huang. But the town itself was really nice, too. I arrived on the train from Beijing and just in front of the train station I was standing next to the old city wall. The whole city is structure very well inside this rectangular shaped city wall and around the central square with the old bell tower. It was in Xi'an that I discovered a Chinese basement hotel the first time. It's basically what the name tells you, the rooms are on floor -1. It's not so bad as one could imagine, and it's cheap. In my nice basement dorm room I meet Raul from Spain. The next couple of days we traveld together which was good fun.... read more

Hello everybody, Our departure from Calgary was uneventful, and arrived in LA on time. After we checked into the Westin, we hopped on a city bus and went strolling at Venice Beach. Shona, one of our friends and fellow travel agent, arranged for her daughter (who lives in LA), to pick us up at Venice Beach. She took us to the Halloween street party in West Holloywood. Oh my goodness, the men looked better in their skirts then I ever will. It was different but fun. All kinds of characters, and I'm not talking Disney. We had an early night and enjoyed a great night sleep in Westins Heavenly Beds. Today was long, 1 hr to San Francisco, then 12.5 to Bejiing. Our tour guide is about 25 years old and really has a good grasp ... read more

31.10.05 - Qiaotao From Lijiang we travelled north about 80km to Qiaotao, the gateway to the world's deepest gorge - otherwise known as Tiger leaping Gorge after an old fable of the tiger escaping hunters by jumping from one side to another! It is approx 13,000 feet deep and China's longest river, the Yangtze, flows through the centre. There are 2 roads along the gorge, the low road designed for tours and people who want to take a day trip to see the gorge and the high road up in the Haba mountains for stupid people like us who decide to trek along the top! It's a 2 day hike but we started late on the first day so spread it over 3 days, stopping many times along the way to marvel at the spectacular scenery. ... read more

the girls got more than they bargained for...*grin..in the good sense of course...and they were hosted by the families of students from Xing Hai school. Many of the parents went the extra mile and during our home visitation, they shared with us what they have been treated to....here's a sampling of their immersion in the chinese culture: - a treat to the flavour of the month - hairy crabs - many of our gals have the chance to taste the seasonal crab and for the uninitiated, it's pretty expensive here in s'pore...as it's known for its fragrant roe! - learning how to make dumplings, drinking wine at a wedding dinner, having a famous calligrapher to give personal paintings - all these are part n parcel of the treats that were given to Ling Huan - thankfully ... read more
