A ten hour bus trip from Chengdu to north-eastern Sichuan province brought me to Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve, a UNESCO world heritage site and probably one of the most visually stunning scenes in China and definitely the nicest I've seen while here. Vast ecosystems and numerous lakes compose the park and at 72000 hectares, requires shuttle buses to run through in order to cover the massive distances. Many endangered animals such as the giant panda and some sort of monkey live on the reserve, though chances of seeing them are remote at best. I met an Austrian guy named Thomas the morning before heading up, at the hostel, and we went to the bustop together, although we traveled on different buses up. I was in a great mood on the way up as I had discovered and ... read more

The Sichuan province is surrounded by mountain ranges on all but its eastern side, with the Himalayas on it's western side. These mountains are Holy to the Tibetans who inhabit them in villages and monasteries. Naturally its very high altitude, and is full of rivers, lakes and gorges. Its home to a 500km2 nature reserve and is the native home of the giant panda. Intriuging? Thats what I thought... So the time came to say goodbye to the charismatic Xi'an, for a week or two anyway. I left Tom, my friend who I will be spending New Years with in Korla, with the money to get me a train ticket when he buys his. One thing that is frustratingly flawed about buying train tickets in China is you can only buy tickets leaving from the station ... read more

We went there mid-June 2009. There were only 10,000 people in the park that day 1/3 of what the # of people there is before the earthquake in 2008. It's absolutely amazing. I've been to so many places in the U.S. and nowhere is comparable to Jiuzhaigou!... read more

Lets see... what has happened since my last entry... On Friday the 25th we went to see the Terracotta Warriors, which is about a 1 hour bus ride from Xi'an. For those not familiar with them, they were one of the greatest archeological finds ever. I think they were discovered in the late 70's (I should know this...) but I do remember that they are 2200 years old. Just google it if you're really into the history. Basically it is an army of thousands of life sized clay warriors, with horses, weapons, the whole schebang. Each of the warriors is unique, and it has been suggested that they were modeled after the faces of real warriors. I'm glad we saw them, BUT both steph and I agreed that they did not live up to the hype. ... read more

So if you have seen any photos of the lakes at Jiuzhaigou you would be forgiven for thinking that the colours have been photoshopped. I can assure you they are real. Today we spent the whole day travelling the 70 km of narrow valleys filled with bubbling streams, cascading waterfalls and incredible coloured lakes. The park is incredibly accessible, with boardwalks linking all the pools and waterfalls which keep the 2.8 million visitors per year from impacting the site. Busses run up and down the valleys all day and you can get on and off wherever youy please. It realy is a brilliant setup making such a large park accessible. We walked around 20kms and it wasn't to hard really. Some highlights were - arrow bamboo lake - where the water fight scene from 'Hero' was ... read more

Apologies for another Blog so soon, but this place deserves a space of its own. Jiu Zhai Gou is a National Park in Northern Sichuan where glaciers have created a series of emerald coloured lakes, all surrounded by misty peaks. It was raining the day I went which was unfortunate. However, it was still an amazing place, especially since the rain meant I had the place to myself for hours at a time. I really want to come back one day and see the place in Autumn. These photos don't do the place justice. See the following link:- Jiu Zhai Gou ... read more

Terrible headache never stops torturing me as long as disembark the aircraft in Jiuzhaigou airport meanwhile I wasn’t pretty much bothered by mountain sickness while in Tibet though the sum of my Tibetan tours covers 20 times. The average altitude in Tibet is around 12’000 feet but only 8’000 to 10’000 in Jiuzhaigou. It’s not a proper way to evaluate one’s physical condition only through by the reaction of altitude. A basic rule for mountain travelers is do not feed yourself bunch of pills for headache or hard breathing unless it’s been proved mountain sickness. Some sort of reaction might be a bit strong on those first timers by air cos they fail to get used to the altitude bit by bit so those bus travelers won’t have the same problem for their bodies already experienced ... read more

The Nine Castles Valley—Earthly Paradise The high land area in western Sichuan Province is highly likely considered the most expectable destination for backpackers, photographers, ordinary tourists or anyone who wonna learn an absolute place in lifetime. That’s Jiuzhaigou which is now a national park, translated as Nine Castles Valley, a Tibetan county with both incredible landscape and amazing native custom, a heavenly dreamland. Been years a long long bus ride over 10 hours from Chengdu, the provincial capital city of Sichuan Province, through that high land region can’t be skipped till an airport small but functions well accomplished couple of years ago, the air ride over those dagger-like snow peaks takes only 45 min, the 10’000 plus feet altitude in that airport makes ppl being confidence that they are getting closer to the blue sky for ... read more
