Jiuzhai valley from north of the Sichuan province, famous by the high mountain and crystal water, that is one of the most beautiful place in China, and the main ethnic there is the Tibetan, curiously the places where the main ethnic is Tibetan, the natural beauty is always more noticeable. On May 12th of 2008, there was a huge earthquake in Wenchuan, the city on the middle way from Chengdu to Jiuzhai valley, some part of the path was under construction and the flow of the tourists there increased substantially, somehow that was a good news for my trip there, not so many people, it really makes the difference, specially for the Jiuzhai valley, normally the tourist visitors were about 10 thousands per day, and now it was about 3 thousands. Sichuan province is the land of spicy food and home of the Panda. Chengdu is the capital, geographically akin to St. Louis - the final post of the eastern part of the country before the vast and much less populated western frontier. We flew into the capital, Chengdu, and then flew north to JiuZhaiGou (Valley of Nine Villages) about 4,000 meters above sea level (13,000 feet) and at the southern end of the Minshan mountain range. JiuZhaiGou takes its name from the nine Tibetan villages that line the valley. The valley is famous for its lakes and waterfalls - crystal clear and incredibly blue in color due to the high calcium carbonate content. This is a poor part of the province, with farming the main source of income. The people are peaceful, laid back and friendly ... read more

(Day 128 on the road)After twelve hours on the bus from Chendu through the earthquake region of Sichuan, we arrived at the national park of Jiuzhaigou. Jiuzhaigou was the main reason for coming this far north from Lugu Lake in Yunnan, but looking back, it was well worth it. The UNESCO recognised park is famous for its crystal clear mirror lakes and its waterfalls, and we spent the whole day wandering around this beautiful landscape. On the downside, the steep entrance fee of 220 yuan plus a 90 Yuan charge to use the shuttle bus inside the park (you need it, it is huge) left a somewhat bitter aftertaste (as did the ridiculously overpriced food inside the park). Karen had tried once before to come here when she had been to Chengdu previously, but due to ... read more

There is not a whole lot we could say about Songpan. The drive up from Chengdu was rather pleasant and scenic, winding along a muddy river for miles. The driver didn't smoke in the bus which was a good thing considering that we had had our fill of the dangerous, annoying, inconsiderate habit. But he was decidedly flatulent forcing us to debate which habit we detested more. Songpan, the old city anyway, was contained within new city walls built on ancient gates. It was a mini city with a decent collection of souvenir shops, restaurants and budget accommodation. We heard that trekking or horseriding to its pristine backlands was quite the adventure but Songpan's first snow had already fallen leaving the overpasses slippery white and the air deathly cold. And so, from atop the city walls, ... read more

I arrived Jiuzhaigou from Songpan after a 3 hour pretty painless ride. I had a hotel booked, but at last minute the hotel/hostel backed out and I showed up to look for a three night stay. A lot of the hotels were fully booked or looked a little suspicious. There are a zillion hotels in Jiuzhaigou. I ended up at Jin Long Harbor for 800 rmb a night, which is a complete rip-off in hindsight. The hotel claims to be a 3* hotel, but it should be like 2.5*. Oh well. It worked out fine and I'm alive. I stayed in Jzg alone that night and visted the park by myself the next day. I headed out early the next morning and got to the entrance of the park gate at 7:30 am. There was hardly ... read more

I spent two days exploring Jiuzhaigou park. One day solo, one day with my friend M. The first morning, the taxi driver who drove me to the hotel I stayed at showed up at the hotel at 7:00 am to take me to the park entrance. I had casually mentioned that I planned to go to the park at 7:00 am, but didn't ask for him to take me. As I got out of the cab that morning, he asked when I was going to go back to the hotel. I thought this was a bit odd of a question, considering that he has better things to do than especially take me back to my hotel. Then he said, "don't forget to pay the balance of your hotel bill." Umm? The day before, I only paid ... read more

Introduction JiuZhai Gou is only 35 minutes away from Chengdu by flight. From the airport to the entrance is another 1.5 hr car ride. This is the best conserved national park so far in China. It's been said that you don't need to look at any water any more after you visit JiuZhai. While it might not all be true, it really says something about how clear the lakes and streams are in JiuZhai. There are waterfalls everywhere, from the happily singing little ones in the forest to the thundering big NuoRiLang fall. The algae in the lake give the water variable shades of blue and green. Lots of fallen logs in the lakes. The water is so clean that the logs never rot. A truely unique phenomenon. We were also amazed at how well the ... read more

When the bus left Songpan bus station we were the only 2 passengers on it and, on arriving in Jiuzhaigou, we immediately found a dirt-cheap suite equipped with a futuristic multi-jet shower featuring a radio and array of blue lights. I couldn't help suspecting the gods had given us this good luck because of an impending shafting. Like many areas of natural beauty, Jiuzhaigou did not look its best with drizzle and overcast skies. Such was our fate for much of our 2 days there. The park is one of the most expensive attractions in all of China - quite possibly THE most expensive, as a cursory flick through the RG showed that it comfortably exceeded the entry fees of more famous sights such as the Terracotta Warriors. There is a hop on/hop off bus service ... read more
