The day began with a weird moment when we arrived at 4am in Chengdu and nobody moved from their beds. We asked if we had arrived and were told we had, but, from what we could fathom the bus terminal does not open for a couple of hours and so people were not being kicked off the bus and were able to finish their nights sleep before they were actually dropped at the terminal. We got off however, had fun trying to find the way out and then took a taxi to the Mix Hostel. First impressions are that this is a good place to stay, and we’ve put in quite a bit of effort to getting to know it. For the first time in ages, today we stayed inside for almost the entire day, ... read more

The last few days have been eventful. The Yangtze river cruise was really nice and relaxed. The scenery was amazing. We did a morning trip off the main boat up one of the tributeries (the Shenlong Stream). We got on the small boat at 7.30am and it was packed with a mass of people and so no seats. We therefore had to get stolls and sit on deck. This was fine, until we started moving and realised it was FREEZING cold. The wind made it feel very cold and I had sandles on (as we'd been told it would be 25 degrees - and my feet are still a little sunburnt). We were taken to a smaller wooden boat, which the group all jumped in and promptly handed life jackets (which wouldn't really have worked but ... read more

Due to our extended stay in Hong Kong, we had to cut short our time in China and visit only 1 city outside Beijing. We selected Chengdu, in Sichuan province. We left Hong Kong early in the morning, and took a bus across the border to Shenzhen airport for our flight. Here, we recognized that unlike other places we'd visited, English wasn't going to be widely spoken in China! After an uneventful flight, we arrived in Chengdu and our great hostel, Sim's Cozy House, located in a traditional courtyard, with resident pet piglets. It served great (& spicy) Sichuan food and cheep Chinese beer, with a friendly atmosphere. Chengdu is in the middle of a wave of development, with streets being dug up for a new subway system, and many older residences either being renovated, ... read more

Day 30 Most of today was spent on the train to Chengdu and we used the time to relax and read and eat in Mark's case! We made a very special purchase on the train and now feel like we have truly embraced the Chinese travelling style. We bought ourselves a flask, not just any flask, a flask with a little plastic carrying handle so we could drink tea (and carry it) on the trains. The people here carry their tea everywhere with them, sometimes in flasks just like ours but mostly just in empty jam jars. We arrived in Chengdu mid-afternoon and settled into our room at Sims Cozy Guesthouse, a great place that was very obviously designed for travellers by travellers. The rooms were clean and comfy, there 's a bar, restaurant, table ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07I'd visited Chengdu before. My clearest memories were of funeral shops and pollution. I optimistically thought there was probably much more to the city, particuarly as I was to spend the next 3 months of my life based there. However, my memory was not playing tricks on me. Chengdu has won the esteemed title of 'Worse City in China.'... read more

Chongqing to ChengduMatt and Ed Matt: After four days of singing, dancing and drinking our way down the Yangtze, we were woken for the final time by the chimes of our cabin tannoy followed by a couple of lines of Chinese and (apparently) an English translation. Ed (who has become an expert in Chinglish), explained that the message had announced our arrival in the city of Chongqing and told us that we were being booted off the MV Emperor. I groaned, and through a half opened eye, peered out of our porthole only to be depressed by what lay beyond. Chongqing definitely would not win any beauty contests! Its 32 million residents cling precariously to the sides of several rocky mountains that drop steeply into the brown polluted waters of the Yangtze. Apart from its huge ... read more

Upon completion of our teaching with Global Volunteers, we flew to Chengdu, 1 1/2 hrs from Xi'an. Chengdu, is known today as the 'GATEWAY TO TIBET'. It is an ancient city, 2,000 yrs old, with a long history. It was capital of Sichuan Provence during the 'Han Dynasty', 220-265 A.D. In ancient times, it was known as the 'CITY OF SILK'. It was the beginning of the silk road which continued south towards Yunnan Provence (Kunming) and into Burma, India;the end of the silk road was Xi'an. The highlight of Marilyn's time in Chendgu were the pandas! There is a large panda breeding facility an hour out of the city which we went to. They have been very successful at breeding the pandas They are bred at 5yrs of age & are quiet, rather solitary ... read more

Well I guess I should start with an April Fool's joke but I can't be bothered! I don't think it's 'celebrated' here, so when in Rome... Summer is officially here in Sichuan. If you live in China or happen to be here when the season changes, you'll notice they change within a blink of an eye, literally within a week. A week ago I was wearing a cardigan, the occasional scarf and wasn't even considering exposing my toes to the air! However since then it has jumped several degrees to the mid 20'Cs, the sun has been out (very unusual for Chengdu as we are on a plain and what with that and the pollution, we rarely see blue sky) and the air-con has become a necessity! I have been moaning about being cold for ... read more

How these creatures have survived I will never know. Not only do they eat a food that is so deficient in nutrients that they need to eat bamboo for 12 hours a day just to survive, but they also refuse to eat half the varieties of bamboo that grow in the wild (60). On top of that they choose to eat the part of the bamboo that is worst for them (the stalk: they eat the leaves and shoots in winter when the stalks are not available. They only have to eat these for 8 hours a day to survive). Even after all that has been taken into account they give birth when the young is so underdeveloped that the chance of survival is very low. Each mother gives birth to 1 or 2 but only ... read more
