Dear Parents, The boys were given a morning call at 6:50 am in the morning. They quickly washed up and got ready for breakfast. They were shocked when were told to make their beds, and sweep/mop the floor. Apparently, some boys do not do house chores back home. They didn’t know how to fold their blankets. The caregiver ‘auntie’ came in and award points for the cleanliness/tidiness of their room. She simply shook her head and asked me if she needed to grade them. “Give them 3 days, before grading them”, I said. Hopefully, by the end of the third day, they’d know to how to do simple house chores. The boys finished their chores and waited until 7:30 am for their breakfast. However, the girls arrived far behind the scheduled time (around 7:50 am). They ... read more

Dear Parents, Today has been a long, tiring but enriching day (That explains why I’m only able to post this entry at midnight). My apology if you’ve stood up late to wait for my entry. Our anxieties and worries last night vanished when we met our students this morning, together with their buddies and families. Although many of them had reservations staying with strangers last night, they shared enthusiastically with the teachers how well they were taken care of by the families. Many of the families brought them out for dinner. Some even brought them to shop, paying for all their expenses. They watched the fireworks display and some played computer games with their buddies. For some families, communication was a problem, but they overcome it with the use of electronic dictionary and handphone. At 830 ... read more

The group arrived at Chengdu at 1430. The weather was cold. Outdoor temperature was around 13 degree celsius. Wei Qing's luggage was damaged and the airport replaced it with a new one. There was a slight delay. Otherwise, everything went on smoothly. The group was recieved by the Principals of Deyang Foreign Languages School. We took an air-conditioned bus to Deyang. The bus journey was about 1 hr and 30 mins. Upon arrival, we unloaded the luggages and then proceed for lunch. The Chinese had buffet lunch in school while the Muslim teacher and students had lunch in a Halal restaurant. Some students commented that the food was too spicy. After lunch, the students went back to their hostel. They quickly unpacked their bags and proceed to the meeting room, where eager parents and buddies were ... read more

Well Hello Hello! It has been oh so very long since our last chat. Since we last spoke I have been on quite a few trips to other cities. I want to try and boil those down for you and bring you up to speed. SHANGHAI I really enjoyed visiting that city. The architecture along The Bund is beautiful. It really looks like something you would see in Europe. It's stunning. They have a useful metro system. Something Beijing is in dire need of, but unfortunately is quite far from having. Yes, they are adding like 12 new lines to the Beijing metro. For the life of me I don't know why anyone would want to take any of them aside from the light rail to the airport. The light rail is the only thing they're ... read more

Alleen een vriendelijke glimlach and that's it. Piece of cake dus. En dan opeens in China! Vlak na de grens voor het eerst kennisgemaakt met de ... read more

Yep, it's Chinese New Year and it's the year of the pig, which means nowt to me as I'm a dog according to their calendar... I flew into Chengdu last night from Dhaka, and saw the fireworks over Kunming and Chengdu as I flew which was lovely. As soon as I arrived I hopped into a taxi and went to my friend Steven's house where he was having a little gathering to celebrate the New Year, which consisted of eating lots of yummy food, watching god-awful Chinese telly (got to be done), lighting firecrackers, sparklers, watching the fireworks and trying our hand(s) at mahjong. I have known how to play mahjong since I can remember as apparently my great-grandmother learnt, and so my dad taught me and my siblings. However I soon came to realise that ... read more

I arrived in Chengdu after a 20-hour train ride, which wasn't so bad except for the businessman across my bunk, who had a 2-hour Chinese yellfest with his colleague (according to Philipp's translation, "Why are you unhappy with your job?!?!"). My ipod helped drone it out... so my sleep was not entirely sacrificed. We checked into Mix Hostel, which is a nice place I would recommend for travelers on a budget (Y15/$2 for a 6-bed dormroom) or for meeting people. It has a clear openness to it, but the Bob Marley/Jack Johnson on repeat got old after awhile-- but added to the hippy atmosphere. It has a diverse crowd of Chinese travelers and foreigners from all over, and a nice fireplace pit to chat all night (till they turn off the music and the nights). I ... read more

A word of advice to all who plan to venture out on their own: Book tickets as far in advance as possible. Early yesterday morning, my plan was to go to the local train station and simply see what my options were in order to make my way to Guilin and Yangshuo. A decently far destination, I passed up on a 500 yuan plane ticket, arriving late last night, just to save a few bucks. My reasoning, if I didn't mind a bit of a train ride, I could easily save 300 yuan or so, easily enough to pay for 2 weeks of hotel rooms. Before making my way to the train station, a fellow hosteller told me to first ask the front desk what they could do for me. I did, and was extremely happy ... read more
