Today we woke up early to drive 2 hour away to Ermei Mountain and to see the Giant Buddha. This Buddha is, I believe, the largest sitting Buddha in the world. It is carved into the side of a mountain with such precise detail that I am just in awe. In addition to the Buddha, there a many other carvings into the sides of the mountain that are a bit weathered but noticeable visible. We began by hiking up a stone staircase path that wound back and forth up the side of the mountain. At one point, we stopped to visit a temple where we go the chance to walk through and look at all the different Buddha’s and experience the culture of the people who worship. One of the most interesting parts for me ... read more

This morning many of my classmates woke up early to go to the panda research center. I did plan on waking up for this as well since pandas are sooo cute and cuddly looking but Brett didn’t bang on the door loud enough to wake me and Fei up! There are two reasons this problem has arisen and I refuse to take the blame for either: 1. Last night Fei literally flushed her phone down the toilet so it’s gone 2. We are in a dormitory and they don’t have hotel amenities or a clock in the room. I think this is a sign that I need to invest in an alarm clock…nah! So since we slept in we decided to go over to the Jinkai International Fashion Market to get some brunch. This market ... read more

It is a well established fact that I have a love of food, in fact, I like to say that "I live to eat, not the other way around". In the past I have tried to deny my problem, I ran away from the issue and hoped that it would just go away, however it hasn't. So, my friend Ory and I came up with a solution, a way for me to once and for all get over my obsession with stuffing my face with copious amounts of cake/brownies/burgers/muffins and anything else tasty. We dedicated a day to food. The location for our binge was Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, which is famous for its spices and snack food. Ory and I were surrounded at every turn by tasty treats, cheap eats, spicy devils and ... read more

Sunday night (May 27th) I headed out with Sugar my ex-private student for some bbq. I promised I would take her out for bbq if she passed her English exam and she did. It was up to her to pick a venue and she chose KuanXiangzi Street beside the Dragon Youth Hostel. It was the two of us and her boyfriends sister. We ordered loads of food and some beers. We got some bbq on sticks and some bbq'd seafood. The seafood came with a vinegar dip and some Japanese spice which I thought I could handle but it nearly blew my head off when I had it. We also got some special Chinese wine which is a bit like mulled wine and better than normal Chinese wine. We were there from about 7.30pm - ... read more

My mother and my little sister are coming to visit me for three weeks. This is going to be intense. My duties as a free tour guide include: setting up hair appointments, arranging accommodations, making restaurant recommendations, planning shopping trips, acting as a free personal shopper for relatives not coming to China, providing bargaining expertise, working as a translator and decoding nebulous statements such as "I want to go somewhere nice." Somewhere nice.... Inner Mongolia is nice, eating dinner in the Sheraton is nice, sitting on a mountain and drinking tea in a remote temple is also "nice." :) This trip will crush dreams and shatter illusions, mine as well as the people traveling with me. So, stay tuned folks this will be a laugh riot. A few minutes ago, I looked over at the computer ... read more

Hello, Since our last entry we have done a few things of interest, won't bore you with too many deetails but after Beijing we spent a few days in the inner mongolian desert camping and moving about on camels. It's absolutely wicked to have a bbq in the desert with a couple of beers, we have eaten a few tasty cuisines as well, Tibetan, mongolian, manchurian but still loving the dim sum. We have climbed the great wall for 10k, seen a 71 meter Buddha who has a 1 meter toenail and travelled thousands of killometers on trains made easier with beer of course. We have seen loads of temples and pogodas which are cool and watched a Kung Fu show which was good, the kick ass kids are mental, front flips with heads instead ... read more

Another quiet day, well for blog material anyway. We both felt quite miserable today as we have seemed to pick up a bad cold each. This is what happens when you actually hang around the hostel, rather than what we do usually and only use the place to sleep in. We then flew to Lijiang in the evening. Arriving in this exquisite little ancient refurbished town, after an earthquake a few years ago. As a UNESCO Heritage site, a lot of money has been put into rebuilding the city as it was. The shuttle bus took us, not really that surprisingly, to the airport shuttle bus terminal in town where taxi drivers stand proud next to their taxis, looking as though they were ready to go. However we were usherd out the gate and told quite ... read more

The plan today was to visit the small town of Huanglongxi, which is a traditional looking ancient town that was used for the set of the film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The main attraction, as it were, that we wanted to see was the Gutong Monastery, actually seen in the film, however the week before, on May bank holiday, one of the busiest days on the Chinese tourist calender, an ancient tree had fallen down and injured a number of tourists. So it was closed for saftey work, it would be open next week! Disappointed about this...we were very pleased to have gone to this town under our own steam as we could decide what time we left, what we did and when we should return. As it was we had a lovely afternoon sitting in ... read more

The 1st of May signalled the beginning of the 'Golden Holiday' here in China, which meant that us teachers get until the 7th of May to relax and forget about our lovely little terrors that we teach every week. Funds not allowing me to take off to Beijing or similar, I decided to stick around in Sichuan Province and take a trip to Yibin, which is a port city approximately half the size of Chengdu, set in the mountains and which also has the famous river Yangzi running through it. Yibin is the home of 'bai jiu' ('buy joe'), the notorious 'fire water', an alcoholic drink that one usually drinks straight, down in one. I've never tried it as I haven't touched alcohol for a few years now, but if the smell's anything to go ... read more

Our early start was well worth it this morning as we made a trip to Chengdu’s Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The best time to see the Pandas is in the morning so that you hopefully catch a glimpse of them before they sleep for the rest of the day or just go off and hide. The Centre is about 30 minutes outside Chengdu and is world famous for its ground breaking techniques in breeding Giant Pandas in captivity, to a very high success rate at that. There are a number of different enclosures, all housing different age groups of Pandas. The first one we came to we watched four pandas having a good morning play. We found out that actually these four pandas were the oldest, 15 - 17 years old, they have at ... read more
