Those of you who have read my blog back in January I think it was? may remember that I talked about a modelling job I did with my flatmate and another guy we met. The story was that we were at Dave's Pizzeria talking to Dave who we knew quite well, and he told us his brother-in-law was shooting pics for a furniture catalogue that day outside Chengdu, and they were looking for laowei - foreigners - to be in the shoot and we'd get paid 500 RMB each (quite a lot of money for us with our meagre salaries!), so we agreed! Here are the results...the catalogue is hilarious with the incredibly bad Chinglish but it's something to show the grandchildren I guess!... read more

So here we are in Panda country. This is our last night in Chengdu, situated in the Sichuan province of western China. In total we spent 8 nights here, mainly because our guesthouse (more on that later) was just so warm and welcoming. We arrived here on Wednesday 1st after our first experience with the joy that is the "Hard Sleeper" train. Tomorrow we leave on yet another jet train. I'm starting to think we could write our own book on Chinese train travel. God knows how many thousands of kms we have travelled. Here is the rundown on the train situation. There are 4 options in total-"Hard Seat", does what it says on the tin-You have a seat and it is damn hard. We experienced this on the Beijing-Xi'an leg of the trip and all ... read more

Hello Everyone Well, what a nightmare!! All our previous blogs have disappeared - TravelBlog has had a melt down!! We had uploaded about 60 photos from our time in Chengdu to Tibet ready for the text imput for this blog. All has gone, so we have to start from scratch again. Bear with us. Chewing out in Chengdu Food and drink are very cheap in China. 500-675ml bottles of beer costs 2.9-5rmb (0.50c) and its good beer! We have taken a liking to the local Budweiser brew, made in Wuhan 4.8rmb - one of the 7 furnaces of China, that's why they make good beer there! The food is cheap (not seafood as we are inland) 12-28rmb a meal ($2-4.5). We are not starving. We have found several local dishes we like - Sichuan Beef in ... read more

Vamos ... read more

Day 1 After roughing it through the Tibetean area of wester Sichuan we finally made it to Chengdu and it was a great feeling. Normally big cities in China would be a bit overwhelming but seeing some English signs and knowing where to stay and being able to speak to a variety of other westerners meant that we were just happy to finally be here. We checked into Dragon Town which was a recommended place from other Gappers. it was good but construction work was happening whilst we were there so it wasn't as good as it could have been and it was BOILING hot. We checked in and paid for a few nights. We had a walk around to get our bearings and we all fell into temptation of the great ice cream shops of ... read more

Arriving in Chengdu, we had no idea where exactly in the city we were, and owing to a lack of recognisable landmarks, realised we must be somewhere outside the scope of the 'lonely planet map'. We left the station, walking around to see if we could find a taxi to the centre... soon we found ourselves at the centre of a large throng of local people, all attempting to help/give advice, though language barriers made matters slightly complex. As it turns out, there were mass road works going on, and terrible traffic conditions, so no cabbies were interested in giving us a lift to town. We did manage to find the main train station and book a night in a hotel across the way though. The next day our attempts to reach the centre were more ... read more

It has been pointed out to me that I have been incredibly selfish. Wandering to the otherside of the world and then being evassive about when I am coming back is not a nice or polite thing to do. In fact, it's a bit mean. So, I am writing this my public apology to all of you who love me. I'M SORRY! OH! So, Sorry!!! I'm getting thinner and healthier over here I lost like 5 pounds at some point in the last couple of weeks. Not sure how and I'm pretty sure those five pounds will come back soon, but well thought you should know. What has Mandy been up to lately? Speeding around town on my sweet new bicycle. I love my bike. Having it has made me really happy. It makes going out ... read more

OK, I wrote this when hideously sleep deprived whichexplains some of the weirdness. To appease the photofiends I've since uploaded selected highlights of thetrip so far (I think!). Yep it's all gone a bit existential at this end. I was wondering how long I would have to spend alone before I was overwhelmed with introspection and the answer: three and a half weeks. My focus on the incredible bigness of things was brought into perspective at my ger camp in Mongolia when I noticed that the guy leading my horse trek was checking his texts and that the cutlery in the camp came from Ikea. For me'Mongolia' has always been a byword for all things remote but suddenly everything was interconnected and small again. If I ever get to Timbuktu and find their cutlery is from ... read more
