I'm in Chengdu right now (finally). I lost a day of sightseeing because there was a typhoon in Shanghai and my plane was delayed over 9 hours! I had a 10:50 am flight out of Pudong airport and because of the storm, the plane we were supposed to take landed in Shanghai's other airport. It took them (China Eastern Airlines) 8 hours to organize getting all the passengers to Hongqiao Airport. The plane departed at 8:00 pm. So frustrating. I got to Chengdu 10 hours late. I picked an LP recommended guesthouse - Sim's Cozy Guesthouse. The rooms are clean; I got a private room with bathroom and heater for Y90 a night! Not bad! There are tons of young people here, lots of independent travelers and people that are excited to be in China! It's ... read more

15.oct. Die Menschen sprechen sehr ... read more

Chengdu, the place where people come to visit the Panda Breeding Sanctuary. Of course this was on our route around China! The Pandas were really cute, cuddly looking creatures. We walked through bamboo lined pathways from Panda zone to panda zone. Arriving early in the morning enabled us to see the Pandas feeding, the most active time of their day before they slept again. They seemed to go to sleep really quickly in strange uncomfortable looking postitions! Here go the facts: Pandas are an endangered species, they live in the NW region of Sichuan province in China, in the mountains. Sights are rare. Scientists say that Pandas have existed for 60,000 years. They consume 95% of their diet being bamboo. However they only eat 20 out of 300 species of bamboo. They usually give birth to ... read more

6 days, 5 nights...windy mountain roads, Tibetan villages, incredible views, Chinese food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, yak meat, Chinese traffic jams because of lack of planning, and overnight high in the mountains in "China's most beautiful village" (spectacular views)...and we can't share pictures with you yet. We are having trouble with the internet and downloading our photos, so we will probably have to wait until we get back home in a few days to post the photos.... read more

We all leave tomorrow morning (the 29th) for a 6 day adventure into Western Sichuan. Traveling into some very high mountain areas we will be heading towards Tibetan areas (although we won't actually go as far as Tibet). We'll visit the Tagong Grasslands northwest of Kangding as well as several smaller towns that aren't even on the map. This should be an adventure in so many ways! Included are some photos highlighting a few other events of the past two weeks. We've enjoyed hearing from some of you (even if we haven't been able to respond personally)!... read more

Well... we promised you tales and pictures of Pandas following our visit to the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base, so here they are. We hope that seeing these great pics can at least give you a slight taste of what it was like for us to watch these amazing animals up close and in person. For those of you who do not know, the Sichuan province is considered the homeland for the Giant Panda because more pandas are found in the wild here than anywhere else. Chengdu is called the Giant Panda's "hometown" because of the Panda Breeding base. They have done tons of research on how to breed and take care of the Giant Panda. Because of their efforts the Giant Panda is not nearly as close to extinction as it once was. I (Rod) ... read more

So now it is the 2nd time to go to Chengdu but this time it was with different people and later in the year. Our schools had a 1 week holiday so we all took advantage of the cheap flights and went to the city, which left me with the chance to re-visit the things I didn't get to the first time. Day 1 We arrived late the previous day and planed for our first day to visit the giant Buddah, which had be carved into the side of a mountain cliff. The pictures looked amazing and the place lived up to the expectations. We took a small speed boat over to the place and took pictures from the boat so we could actually get a photo with the whole Buddah inside of it. And then ... read more

We've had some more laid back days in Chengdu... Yesterday we went to a Panda Research and breeding base. It was pretty neat, we saw about 20 pandas all together. The adults and younger pandas we watched were pretty sleepy. They move almost like sloths. The zookeeper people actually pulled them down to eat, got them chasing after the staff for some exercise. We also saw 4 little baby pandas in the nursery, no photos allowed as their eyes are not well developed. They were adorable! Yesterday afternoon we drank tea at a teahouse, surrounded by locals. We were playing chess and many people watched a little while as we played, quite novel for them. Today we had a bit of an adventure finding this "Wang's Tiny Museum". Our guidebook rated it pretty highly. When we ... read more

We had the unique opportunity to receive a personal tour by a zoo veterinarian. A friend of my brother and sister-in-law's has been a vet at this zoo for two years and he is the only Western zoo vet in all of China. (This is also his last week there as he is planning to go into private practice where he can offer more of his services to farmer's in need of vetrinary care to keep their animals (and their subsistance) alive. We learned all kinds of interesting facts, and laughed at the animals reactions to him as some of them recognized him. Since we are going to the Panda Reserve on Friday, we'll save the panda photos for then.... read more
