Scammy Almost another month of traveling down and I have made my way from Shanghai to Beijing then down again through Xi'an to my latest stop in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. To be honest I was not much of a sinophile when I got here - China really lives up to its reputation of being dirty (more like gross), noisy and crowded - and I actually considered catching the next ferry back to Japan after my second day in Shanghai. It wasn't the dirt, noise or crowds making me miss good old Nippon, it was the seeming lack of ethics in this new place. Coming from a country where you can leave your bag in a train station with your money and passport in it and know that it will probably still be there when you go ... read more

So we arrived in Chengdu on the 24th after 16 or so hours on the train. We then waited in line to buy our train tickets out of here. Course when they told us the price we were about 40 yuan short (like 6 bucks!!!). So anyway then we head to our hostel ( basically the coolest one we've seen) and after talking to their "agents" they are able to book us a ticket for a couple hundred cheaper... AND we book a trip to the Sichuan OPERA!!!! It was totally cool. There was the Music, the Opera (Scene from the book Romance of the Three Kingdoms which I read), some solo music, a bit of comedy, acrobatics, shadow puppets, and the mask changing and fire spitting. The part with the mask changers was really ... read more

We are flying out this afternoon to Xi'an where we will spend the weekend visiting this 4,000 year old (or some really old age...we'll know more soon!) city. On Sunday, which is also Rod's birthday, we'll visit the Terra Cotta Warriors that are being excavated. We'll post more photos after we return.... read more

We arrived in Chengdu last Friday night, Sept. 14 after 25 hours of travel. At the Chengdu airport, we were met by my (Andrea) brother, sister-in-law, and 4 nieces (the Carsons). After a great 10 hours of sleep, we were ready to take advantage of a Saturday with everyone off of school and work. It seems that we have brought beautiful weather with us. In this normally overcast, rainy and humid city we have experienced all but one day of balmy, sunny and rather dry weather--basically beautiful days. I'm sure this has added to the charm and endearing feelings we are already developing for this area. So on Saturday, Sept. 15, we all drove to a very old town about 1 1/2 hours from Chengdu named Ping le (pronounced Ping-luo). The day was full: A very ... read more

Timeline: September 4th - September 18th Beijing - Pingyao - Xian - Chengdu My first overnight train ride was 12 hours from Beijing to Pingyao and was actually quite pleasant and by far the best one that I had in China. I was a little apprehensive about taking trains as I am not the biggest fan of being closed in with a lot of other people. If you ever take a look at a big city train station in China you would see why I was worried. Anyway, it left on time at 5:30pm, I was in the top bunk of 3, a little close to the ceiling for my taste (you cannot sit up in bed), but certainly doable. The lights went out at 10pm and I did manage to sleep a bit. We were ... read more

I wanted to call this blog "Chengdu and the 50p hair cut" but decided the pandas were more interesting. I did however get my hair cut, washed and head massaged for 50p, quality!! Anyway.......... We left our hostel in Xian knowing what to expect on the train. It was much the same as our train from Beijing to Xian but not quite as clean. The noise level however was just as loud but bizarly we came up trumps as night time arrived as the 2 chinese lads opposite us hired a dvd player from a guy who was renting them on the train and they chose to watch the new Transformers movie which was in english with chinese subtitles, bargain. Our luck was short lived as when the movie ended they chose to watch chinese comedy, ... read more

So, how can I explain my time so far in China? Let's do a quick picture re-cap. First we landed, stood in several lines for way too long, and seethed both with anticipation and the desire to move our tired butts, slothfully inert for the past 12 hours. Immediately after proceeding through customs, we were whisked away by people from Beida to our snazzy Beida bus. Between airport and bus, however, lay our first glimpse of China - and it was, well, foggy. For the next week, a haze remained over the city, and I began to think this was the way Beijing always was. We never saw the sky, the stars never appeared, and most irritatingly, we could never see more than 150 feet in each direction. It was pretty surreal - cars and bikes ... read more

On June 23, we flew from Chengdu to Shenzhen. On June 24, we went from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, where we stayed with Phyllis' cousin Linda for two days. On June 26, we flew from Hong Kong to Vancouver, then to Edmonton. Then we stayed for a few days, then we return to our summer home of Mountain View. Post trip thoughts -- this year is crazy. We have done much more traveling than planned. Well, better to be able to do so while we are healthy. If we are not healthy, we will not be able to go to Tibet. People with high blood pressure and heart problems are not advised to go to Tibet, because of the altitude. As I am writing this (Aug 25, 2007) in Mountain View, I realized that I will ... read more

Right now, i am on the edge of something that i cannot mention, and yet, i am forced to keep you bored and informed, so i will tell you. My life is so tough sometimes. boohoo. before i get to the boring though, i will tell you quickly about what i have been up to since i last wrote. I last wrote as i arrived in Xi'an. As I'm sure you guessed, we saw the Terracotta people, and Amanda was about as impressed as I am on the constant updates she gives me about her grocery shopping (which is not at all in case my analogies are as bad as ben's). And since it was my second time, it was sort of fun playing the tour guide, but that got old fast. Pretty amazing that i ... read more

Linden is coming to China! We're going to hang out in Beijing, head over to Xian and then on to Chengdu. I want us to go to Jiuzhaigou for a couple of days. It is the only place in Sichuan that I haven't been that I really gone to yet. We might take a day trip into the southern mountains if we get a chance. I have some translation work that I really need to do this weekend. Nothing super interesting is happening right now. I have a new cell phone number. My last cell phone provider was crap. They were way too expensive. I just finished reading Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I really think I want to read some other books by this author in the future. I'm not sure if ... read more
