We were all put into teams for when we were to make our way to the Terracotta Warriors. I was the leader of one group, while Bethany was the leader of the other. On our way we picked up one of Bethany’s teammates who accidentally got left behind. We took the first bus to the railway station (with a little help from a local). After maybe thirty seconds or less, a Terracotta Warrior bus slowed down next to us and a host ran out of the bus yelling for us to get on board. We did as we were told. Arguing with an Asian woman isn’t a great idea (so my mum taught me). And we were soon on our way. The Terracotta Warriors seemed so spectacular and surreal. How could one man have imagined the ... read more

I have to say yesterday was quite an eventful day, it wasn’t so good at first but got much better towards the end. We all woke up pretty excited as we were going to see the famous ‘Terracotta Warriors’! After a delicious buffet breakfast, we found out Yashoda wasn’t coming to see the Terracotta Warriors with us and that we were going to be split into 2 groups (I was put with Bethany, Av, Autumn and Arlene) with one person taking the role as a leader (Bethany), trying to figure out how to get to the Terracotta Warriors. So we waited at a bus stop around the corner from the hotel in order to get one to the train station where we had to catch another bus that would take us straight there. There ended up ... read more

Trucks, cars, buses, tuk-tuks, scooters, bikes, Segways Roads are cluttered with all these vehicles And pedestrians add to the chaos and confusion. Vehicles of known and unknown make and model, Every colour under the sun. Lanes exist as seeming suggestions Lights and horns – a form of communication Indicating a driver’s presence and intention. No ‘Road Rage’, or anger, or frustration ‘Go with the flow’ and all will be well. In every direction, the traffic keeps moving Never ceasing, only lightening a little (between midnight and 4 am). Chaos is the first impression, However, watch a while and you will see In all the ‘random’ action, order exists Never ceasing – only changing a little And pedestrians are a part of it all. Arlene... read more

My class and I were travelling on train from Chengdu to Xi'an and Faith I were sharing a compartment. This tall guy came around the corner. He looked Chinese but he was half Chinese and half American and spoke with an American accent, which I thought was very funny. He (Ming) was travelling with his mum, dad (Steve) and grandma. We played cards with Ming and his dad for most of the trip. He taught us new rules for 'Snap' which they call 'Slap' in America. Ming and Av were the last two people in the game and you had to remember the last 3 cards. It was crazy and there were cards flying everywhere and most of them weren't even going to the pile, but it was fun to watch anyway. In the end Ming ... read more

On Thursday, Bethany, Faith, Autumn and I started our journey to the Terracotta Warriors. At the bus stop we were told to go on the number 5 bus but a different bus arrived and a man told us to get on that bus. We got on the bus and as we were driving away we realized that Autumn was not on the bus. So, when the bus stopped at the next stop, Bethany and I got off and ran back to get her. Arlene and Faith kept on going to the train station. When we got to the bus stop, Autumn was not there and we started to get really worried. We looked everywhere - the bookshop, the lobby, the hotel room, but she was nowhere to be found. About 20 minutes later we got a ... read more

This morning, I was woken up by Avalon getting dressed. Yesterday Avalon and Bethany missed out on the opportunity to see the Terracotta Warriors because of kids getting lost and hopping on the wrong buses. So today they planned to go visit the Warriors early in the morning before most of the other tourists arrive. Faith and I went downstairs with Bethany and Avalon to have the buffet breakfast. After Avalon and Bethany started their journey towards the Warriors, Ken sent a text to the class groupchat saying he was going to try and find Xian’s Drum Tower and Bell Tower. Faith and I decided we would prefer to go and adventure around the city instead of spending the day cooped up in a hotel room. It was just the three of us, Ken, Faith and ... read more

Hey everyone! 好久不見!(hǎojiǔ bùjiàn — long time no see!) Well, it’s been a couple of years since I studied abroad, and I’ve officially graduated from college. I’m a real person now! Actually, I’m not sure how I feel about that part. Like a real person job? Yikes. For that reason, I’m planning on taking a year or two to teach English (hopefully in South Korea). I still don’t have a job, but hopefully that will change in the next month or so. Anyways, as many of you already know, I am currently in Xi’an, China, on an intensive study abroad program. I am studying through the Critical Language Scholarship, which is funded by the US Department of State*. I arrived in Xi’an last Friday, and have now officially completed my first week of classes. In addition, ... read more

Mission: Get to the Terracotta Warriors unassisted! When we left the hotel, we saw Bethany’s group on a bus passing us, but as we walked to the bus stop we found Autumn walking back because she’d accidently been left behind and didn’t know what to do. So we told her to come with us. As we waited at the bus stop, we were trying to figure out which bus we needed to get on. To find out, Tamara went up to two old ladies and showed them the text we got from Yashoda, showing them the symbols for the train station and they went up to the bus timetable and pointed to the one we needed to get on. When the bus came we all got on, and so did the ladies. We weren’t sure when ... read more

We thought we had done it; independently travelling around China without any problems. We were so close and then Tigerair happened. Or rather, didn't. After sitting on the plane for two hours whilst engineers tried to sort out an issue the captain told us that we wouldn't be flying that night. The plane had a fuel leak that could not be fixed quickly. So at 1am a plane full of people had to disembark. We were reassured that ground staff would meet us and tell us what to do. Of course there were no ground staff waiting for us, so we were all stood around not knowing what to do. After about 15 minutes someone turned up and barked instruction in Mandarin. We had no idea what was going on so just followed everyone else as ... read more
