Weer heerlijk geslapen.

Hi All, My second time visiting Xi'an and I don't remember it being this busy when I was here 6 years ago. With only 3 days here we visited the Muslim Quarter, and mosque, The Small Wild Goose Pagoda, The Temple of The 8 Immortals and of course the Terracotta Warriors. All in all it's been a good few days and the dry heat has been a great change from the humidity of Hunan. We catch the train tomorrow morning for the 25 hour trip up to Dunhuang in Gansu Province. Enjoy the photos Jah Bless... read more

Hi All, With a morning to kill before the train back to Xi'an we went for a walk through the city to Bao Ta, The Treasure Pagoda, which was built originally in the Song Dynasty, 960 to 1279 AD. This is the only building that was left standing in Yan'an after the Japanese bombardment, how did they miss it!? It stands out like a sore thumb!. The park cost 65 RMB a ticket which I thought was expensive as there wasn't a great deal else in the park itself. Great views of the city though. Enjoy the photos Jah Bless... read more

Hi All, It's great to be out on the road again. After a 30 hour train journey and a very good night's sleep I was good to go. Yan'an is a remote city in North Western China which marked the end of the Long March, a strategic retreat in which the Chinese communists we're escaping persecution from the ruling Kuomintang, KMT. Here in Northern Sha'anxi and Gansu the communists set up a soviet and tried to negotiate with the KMT to present a united front and fight the Japanese, who had by now had set up the puppet Manchukuo government in North Eastern China. Having just read Edgar Snow's book 'Red Star Over China' I was particularly looking forward to coming here. There is a huge museum in the city which is full of old photos ... read more

Xi'an has always been on my list of the places to visit around the world. The main reason is for the Terracotta Army that I used to watch, since I was a child, on TV. Xi'an is the ancient capital of China named Chang'an and is still one of the most preserved walled cities allover China. Xi'an is fantastic and very easy to walk around exploring the sightseeings and, as a city, my favourite in China. About the center my favourite sight is the fortress which I visited walking on top and taking beautiful pictures of the area. I am happy to see that, at least in Xi'an, the history is still there and that they care about the past unlike it happened in many other cities in the country. In the 19th century, China was ... read more

After spending 13 months inShenyang, the first thing I noticed was my new found ability to breathe. It didn’t smell like rotten fish guts, it wasn't overwhelmingly busy. Downtown Xi’an: To us, the buildings had shrunk to an adorable normal size. What a breathe of fresh air, I have to say this again. Welcome back lungs. Little two-storey, simple and obvious shops. These bricks were made with a simple purpose of building a small restaurant, you will notice, recognize and be able to work out that you can eat here. You can even see English here and there. This isn't the China we are used to. At last, China had put away it’s obsession with heights and super-bright redundant signs. It wasn’t as harsh, as in your face, as unruly. There were actual old buildings, some ... read more

We darted onto the subway with our bags and managed to prise ourselves on the second train that came along, no chance on the first, was rammed solid. after security checks and ID checks we were ready to jump on the bullet train to Xian, armed with several packets of nutrious crisps and a packet of crunchy peas. The bullet train is amazing it sped through the countryside at 300km/ph giving us exciting views of more grey sky and smog. 1000km and five hours later we arrived in Xian north train station, we being intrepid English adventurers decided to go round in circles and up and down a few esculators before reaching the taxi rank, in other words we couldn't find the exit and got lost. using once again our extensive knowledge of mandarin chinese, we ... read more

Wednesday 28th October 2015 Upon boarding the train from Pingyao we arrived at Xian roughly 4 hours later. We then boarded the metro and made our way to the centre of the city to our hostel which was based within the city walls. Xian, much like Pingyao is an ancient city and is surrounded by a city wall. Xian however, is much larger and more developed, probably on account of the discovery of the Terracotta Army in the 1970's which turned this place into one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. We checked into our room and decided to explore the town a little before a relatively early night as we would be up early the next day to visit the Terracotta Army. It was around 4pm by the time we mobilised ourselves and ... read more
