Dear Friend, I am home again. It is snowing. It is not the silent snow of depth or the kind of snow that has fallen during the night muffling the world outside. It is the snow that includes you in its floating. Gentle snow flakes land on my upturned hand. I wait. It is not as exciting as ‘the first snow’ but it envelopes me, just the same. I see the crystallized formation of the flakes as I once did when they rested on my duffle coat as a child. I remember looking in awe at them then as I do now, many years later. I am tired. So many practical things achieved, so many still to do. My neighbour woke me with her return home at 1.30am, scolding her puppy and screaming at it in ... read more

I am back because I need to put something to bed, I think. My Chinese sister and shu shu knew that I was coming but not exactly when so when I arrive, they are not here. I wait for a short while considering my next move whilst their neighbours come to look at me; something I am used to here. No one that I want comes, so I gather my things to walk back to the house in the lanes that I have lived in. I have no idea where they are, it’s just a guess. On the way people start to recognize me. The vegetable seller rouses herself from semi sleep slumped on her polystyrene box to wave and smile, the bird and flower man says the obvious,’ you have returned’ and my self appointed ... read more

Ely and I stayed up all night, the night before our 18-hour jaunt to the Middle Kingdom. This strategy makes the acclimation process much easier, and was aided by the fact that travel bug had been steadily building in our veins, sending off excited endorphins that inhibited sleep. Also aided by the fact that we chose not to pack until the night before. Very non-customary of me. Our trip started of terribly. We failed to amend Ely’s passport. This isn’t a problem when traveling to Tijuana, but Communist China doesn’t like when your passport name and airline ticket name don’t match. After 45 minutes of waiting, the ticketor performed some sort of miracle—possibly illegal albeit—and re-ticketed Ely under her maiden name. We took off our wedding rings and proceeded through the gates. Our friends, Rick and ... read more

We made our way from Shanghai to Suzhou on the high-speed train (our first one in China, actually first one ever for both of us). It was super comfortable with tons of leg room and we were impressed with our top speed that reached 250 kph. More on high-speed trains in our next blog entry... For some reason we had convinced ourselves that Suzhou would be a nice small town ("charming" in the words of our guide book) to relax for a few days. We must have overlooked the part of the book that stated a population of 5.7 million. Our first clue was the length of time it took to reach the train station after we entered the outskirts of the city. On the plus side, once we navigated the bus system, got off several ... read more

Today has been a travel day so no photos to publish specific to today - just thought I would post a couple of general photos for interest. We left our Guilin hotel at 9.15, an hours drive to the airport (we had to drive a fair way out of town to get away from all the mountains) Our flight was on time and we arrived at Pudong airport in Shanghai just after lunch. Then it was an interesting 2.5 hour drive to Suzhou, through the outskirts of Shanghai - will talk more about Shanghai tomorrow as we go back there after a one night stay here. After checking in we had time for relaxing bath and then it was off to dinner and a walk around the streets of Suzhou - the city has a lot ... read more

It is a fact that whenever something is called the something of something else it’s not, otherwise it would just be known for what it is. Suzhou is famous for its networks of canals, stone bridges, old white washed buildings, and plentiful gardens. There are two times it is recommended to visit, Spring and Fall. The first so that one can see all the blooming flowers in any of the dozens of gardens throughout the city and the later to see the typical fall foliage colors. We were happy with the later since we had been living in Southern California and most recently Southern China and neither of which have any well defined seasons. We headed out to the Hangzhou North Bus Station after Elyse’s last class on Friday afternoon. Suzhou is in the neighboring Jiangsu ... read more

1. Shanghai Expo and other hijinks 2. Cory and Lacey's arrival 3. Life in Suzhou the last few weeks 4. Our trip to Qingdao/Huangdao, including some fun buses I'm sorry that I'm weeks behind. I will try to get some things up here soon. Thursday we leave for Xi'an, then we'll be traveling the whole rest of the trip until leaving from Hong Kong on August 5th. UPDATE: I've been back in the US a few weeks, and still haven't caught up. I still intend to! As you might have been able to guess, the last few weeks I was in China I was traveling too much to really have time to keep up with the blog as thoroughly as I wanted to, so I ended up posting nothing. Sorry about that. Anyway, I'll still write ... read more
