... read more

Qingming - Sweeping of the Tombs day. I'm back on the balcony of my old house in the lanes of Suzhou and I'm content. The sounds of localized China are floating up from the market. There are so many memories in this house - even my body still moves cautiously to the memory of a wugong in the kitchen. Now, so many new things have happened this time with a daughter. We have neither lived nor holidayed here until yesterday, when, sitting in the milk tea shop, I suddenly felt right back at home. It wasn't the tea or the comfy chair that made me feel at home but the story of our last week. The story of being given my old house back by the kindest of people, of walking through the back lanes to ... read more

If you know anything about China, you will know that there are professional photo shops everywhere for bridal couples to have pre wedding photos. Chinese girls also like to have their own set of professional photos too - for no reason. It's cheap, it's funny and it's totally fake. here is what patti and I did today. 3 changes of clothes, 3 hair styles, full make up and 3 photo shoots - 2 outside and 1 in with full entourage, cameraman, hair dresser / make up artist, cardigan carrier, accessory carrier and me - oh, and many people staring. Within 1 week, 1 professional photograph album and 2 large framed photgraphs. 588rmb. by the way, these are my photos - not theirs. Their's will go to nana and grandads. ... read more

The time is different but the places and people are not. I return to my Chinese hometown of Suzhou after 5 and a half months of personal change beyond their comprehension. I can’t even begin to explain my job to the people I know here because here there is nothing like it. No job like it, no culture like it, no knowledge of that kind of school or job. Suzhou is a town of more than 6.5 million yet it resembles nothing like any city in the UK. After a morning poking in the old city of Shanghai, Patti and I caught the 14:21 bullet train to Suzhou. There is even more security here in the stations since I left. More electronic scanning machines to put your bags through - even on the underground - everyone ... read more

I have received some very special letters in my life time. I remember some beautiful words type written on old newspaper images, medium format photographs overprinted with text, a box with a brooch and a photograph and an encouragement, a card with a message of hidden love, a note from a provost, a thank you from a duchess, a card from my mother, a letter from my daughter after I had left her when she was 9 years old but today, I received a letter beyond comparison to anything else I have ever received. It came from a man who lives in a one roomed house in China, in the old lanes of Suzhou, who grows plants up plastic twine to make a shade in a yard in the searing heat of the Chinese summers. It ... read more

As quoted by Marco Polo in a passage describing the two places as the most beautiful cities on Earth; "The Sky has heaven, and Earth has Suzhou and Hangzhou”. Suzhou lies approximately 100 km west of Shanghai. It has been inhabited for over 5000 years and due to its many canals, hump-backed bridges, cobbled streets, Chinese traditional gardens and white-washed houses it is known as the Venice of the East to this day. Now, I’ve never been to Venice, but I imagine the Chinese version is a bit more ‘out there’; where in Venice can one witness goats being slaughtered on the sidewalk? Suzhou was the capital of Jiangsu province during the Song dynasty for the birth of the silk trade, and with that in mind, the first stop was the Suzhou Silk Museum! I walked ... read more

So here we go 7 am flight out of jersey! (Up at 5am after an hours sleep, bags of fun, please excuse the pun!) Arrive to Gatwick with ZERO stress, taxi to the infamous Terminal 5 of Heathrow..... remembering horror stories of millions of pieces luggage apparently deciding they didn’t fancy going on holiday with respective owner and wandering off to live a life free of getting dragged to various countries around the world only to be locked in a hotel room for the whole time, not surprised they jibbed their owners!! Flight to Shanghai called on time, board plane, sat on tarmac not moving for 2 hours while they “de Ice the plane??! (were they using hand warmers or just blowing on it??)
