Photos: …..autumn is approaching by slow degrees. After another spell of 30C plus weather & clear skies it's clothing is now only damp rather than dripping after a day in the classroom . Since the last issue we've had our second week of teaching, (my schedule of back to back afternoon classes still hard to get accustomed to), & a trip to the historic canal city of Suzhou, at the end of the famed Silk road but only two & a half hours by bus south west of Yangzhou..... …..Sunshine is leaving Yangzhou. Our short-lived career will end in a few weeks as she migrates to warmer climate, Beihai, a seaside town in southern, tropical China. She leaves me with some chord charts for songs I'd never played before & some great new friends from the ... read more

Blog numero dos (Matt’s been taking Spanish classes this summer). So last time, I rode the bullet train, met Matt’s parents, and ate the stomach of a bull (Toro!). Let’s go, cause this might be the most important thing I’ve blogged about yet. July 23rd: So we woke up early (omg, 7:30, really?) and went off to go to a family friends place to see some embroidery. At this point, I was thinking, “Oh, cool – Chinese culture, whatever.” We got to the embroidery place, and walked in, and then it happened. Speechlessness. No seriously. I think my mouth has previously, involuntarily dropped 3 times in my life and 2 of those times I was left speechless. Most times, I recovered in 5 minutes. I was speechless the whole time I was there (3 hours.) And ... read more

So... as of tomorrow it will have been exactly 1 month since I have left the United States. Time does seem to be going pretty quickly here. Every day has been some kind of adventure, be it getting on the wrong bus or acting as a tourist and seeing the sights. Yesterday I had some friends come in from Shanghai to see me and the town. We had a good time but I felt terrible because on several accounts I led them the wrong way or took them on the wrong bus. I did my best to plan ahead of time and things just kept going wrong. It's very difficult because the buses are not in English and there are no maps! It's a terrible system but it is the ONLY system so you have to ... read more

On Friday July 8th, 2011 I left Shanghai for my new work destination, Suzhou. It was very hard to leave behind the great new friends that I made but I managed to do it. I took the speed train which went over 200 miles an hour. I got dizzy just from looking out the window. At first, I really didn’t like the city. It was too quiet. Truth be told, I did a little cry once I realized how alone I was when I got to my hotel. I had friends around me constantly then to suddenly be alone in a new country was hard, at least at first. I technically live in what’s called SIP or Suzhou Industrial Park. Yeah, it’s an ugly name but it’s actually pretty nice. I am a short walk from ... read more

I'll begin with the cliche. There is and old Chinese saying 'In heaven there is Paradise, on earth there is Suzhou and Hangzhou'. I spent the last weekend with Teresa exploring the so called Venice of the East. We cruised the canals, cycled the cobbled waterways and explored the city in true backpacker style. With the sun blistering, the humidity threatening to melt us like wicked witches we arrived in Suzhou worse for wear but early and wanting to get out and about and eat! The hostel, Suzhou Mingtown hostel, part of the YHA was too perfectly situated. It sat on a quiet stretch of canal in the city centre, there was a steady strean of human traffic strolling up and down the canalside and occasionally the tooting of a moped horn or the tring of ... read more

I haven't really been doing that much in Suzhou, at least it would look that way if you made a list. And that was kind of the point. I used the time to just be in a familiar city in China, and take a break after the semester, before the month-long solo portion of the trip. Mike and I played a lot of Mario Kart, and a computer game called Deadlock, and mostly stayed around his neighborhood, occasionally meeting up with some of his friends/fellow teachers. We went to a lot of the same old restaurants he had introduced me to before, as well as a few new ones that had opened since I last was in town. It's been a good two weeks, and I'm sad to leave, even as I'm excited about the rest ... read more

Today I went to the train ticket office near Mike's place to get the first 2 of the 4 Chinese train tickets I'll need. I already have my 2 of my 3 Thailand tickets, booked online, (the third is a short hop that I can just buy at the station) and I'll get my Malaysia ones later this week, also online. Last year we went to this office to get tickets to Beijing and attempt to get tickets for Cory, Lacey, and me to go to Qingdao. It was hot, crowded, and due to Expo the availability of tickets was very sketchy. Today, I walked in to find a total of 3 people inside the building, and I strolled up to the counter and was able to clearly, cleanly, and without error, request the tickets I ... read more

We went to Suzhou (pronounced Sue-Joe) with Emily's friend Sam and her boyfriend Alex. Suzhou (Sz) is one of a few 'small' towns (population 5.5m!) full of canal paths and referred to as the 'Venice of the East'. Certainly in the case of SZ this is a complete overstatement. To get to SZ you take a super high speed train they have in China known as the 'bullet train' due to the way the train is shaped. After going to the wrong station (not our 1st time doing this in China!) we were speedily on our way - the speed is actually displayed in the cabin, we hit 310km/hr on the way there and 332km/hr on the way back. I had never been on the bullet train before but thought it was pretty awesome. With no ... read more

It’s strange how, when you are leaving a place, your thoughts change but often your feelings don’t. I’m filling my last days in Suzhou to the brim. Brimful time. Everyday, on the roof of my kitchen, for two hours, my TaiQi teacher tries to teach me the basic steps. I’m rubbish. It’s hard to even learn the basic eight steps when it’s never been a part of your way of thinking. And, until I learn these steps, there’s no way forward. My teacher is a gentle woman called Ginger; though, she’s not. She’s uncharacteristically divorced and her 17 year old son lives with her parents in North East China where the temperature is now minus28. I’d hoped to have 3 months learning TaiQi but that’s not going to happen so, like the last days in Beijing, ... read more
