Well, we have just spent the day visiting the home of Kong Fu and I am most impressed. We arrived in Shaolin from Luoyang after visiting the Longmen Caves which is one of China's few surviving masterpieces of Buddhist rock carvings. While in Luoyang we spent the day checking out the entire face of a mountain which has been carved into a thousand images of Buddha. The detail in the carvings made it a very impressive sight. We got to Dengfeng on a local bus while dealing with the usual confused expressions, spitting and language barrier issues. The pointing, staring and occasional poke does not surprise me anymore, but I still can't get my head around their need to spit everywhere. Its disgusting, they spit on the bus, the train, the street and even the shop ... read more

The famous Shaolin temple, located in the Henan province, one of the most populous provinces in China, there is a Chinese saying: "all the style of the Kong Fu had the origin from Shaolin", in fact the Shaolin Kong Fu is very famous, the Shaolin temple always had the image from my mind, a peaceful place, the monks training, old buildings, but it is not like that now, the Shaolin temple is extremely commercial now, it is like a big entertainment park, the place I could find the feeling of old Shaolin is the "the forest of the pagodas", there is the to keep the elevated monks after the death. The Longmen cave, it is one of three main stone cave in China, these caves have the sculptures and paintings about the Buddhism, it is quite ... read more

it's time to say goodbye to china... The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of sleep deprivation, long train rides, sunflower seeds and music. The three fungal horses set off from Kunming in mid-May after a couple of great gigs there and in Dali, and headed up to Chengdu. Kunming... the city of eternal spring finally pulled out the stops and gave us some good weather just before we left. Kunming was all about quebecan bluegrass, dodgy dvd's, the first snow in 10 years (eating shit on the mountain), late night ridiculousness, and flea markets. Dali, as usual, was all about Bai women trying to sell us drugs, hotpot flavored vodka, card games and music. Real rye bread and fried mushrooms, the best spaghetti bog I've had in... months. We rolled in to Chengdu after ... read more

Well we made it.... We missed the Ferry from Victoria BC Canada to Vancouver due to weather and high winds so we caught a taxi to the Victoria airport with a nice lady named Tara that was on her way to Las Vegas. We ended up paying about $270 CAD for two tickets to Vancouver where we connected to our Hong Kong flight. We were luck enough to get four seats in a row so (we) could get some sleep. Sindy managed to get about 5 hours and I got about 15 minutes... Don't think I will ever want to watch 6 movies back to back again! We had no problem getting from the airport to our hotel via the airport train and then taxi from Kowloon station. Well we then arrived at our (hotel/hostel/prison)...not the ... read more

On Friday, Jan. 18th we found ourselves back in Hong Kong with goal #1 being, change Stephanie’s tourist visa to a work visa. After crossing the Shenzhen/Hong Kong border at Luowu, we headed straight for the visa office where Cody kept our packs company outside (they’re not allowed in the PSB, FYI) for two hours while Stephanie waited for her #, handed in her paper work, and crossed her fingers. The visa wouldn’t be processed until the following Monday, which gave us the weekend to once again explore Hong Kong. After some extensive searching at the various hostels in both Mirador and Chungking Mansions on Nathan Road, we got serious and ended up, once again, at the New China Hotel in Chungking. Only this time we took full advantage of the fact that the Mansions has ... read more

Hello to you all back home, thanks for the messages and keep them coming!!! Ok so we arrived in Xi-an shortly before our last blog and it is another busy city, the smog was really bad there and we both found it difficult to walk about with the heat and air so bad. On the first day we went out and headed up one of the main streets, mostly the same type of thing we saw in Beijing. After a short walk the air was getting to us so we headed inside to a shopping centre for something to eat. It was massive with about 7 floors that went al the way round an open middle bit so you caould see down to the bottom. Each floor only sold one or two things so you ... read more
