We rushed "home" today after a busy morning of studies and teaching other games. I purchased a marjonng (correct spelling provided by Vivian - thank you Vivacious Vivian) last night at Xia Market. So today Jack and others taught Megan how to play while I taught Leo, Larry (a nice young lady who just joined our class yesterday) and Gilliam to play scrabble. Another grouped played cards. In the afternoon they taught me to play a Chinese card game called Big Eyes. Anyway, I digress. We rushed home to eat so we could meet Victor, Jonny and Gilliam to get haircuts. They had found a place the other day with Megan. (Gillian is helping Megan to learn Chinese during lunch break and after class in the evening. They went shopping the other night to practice phrases ... read more

As the world changes so changes XinYang - yet so much remains the same. "Urban renewal" is everywhere. So many buildings have been torn down, and rightly so, but so much remians the same; and are the new buildings really any better? Wednesday, Ms. Ruan, one of the teachers where we are teaching, took us the back way to our hotel. She took us past a large shopping center. The moment Megan and I saw it we both recognized it - Xia Market! We one rode in cabs from Xinyang Technical College to shop at Xia Market. Our students were so proud to take us there. The street is now paved over and a plaze has made where no cars may drive. There are many shops up and down the strip where the street once was, ... read more

I have seen many more beggars on the streets than during past visits. I wonder if this is a bigger problem then it used to be or if it because I am traveling on a busier, more commercial street than I have in years past? Today I passed a woman twice sitting cross-legged on the ground holding her daughter who was maybe six. Both times I passed the young girl was asleep and looked flushed and ill. It broke my heart, and I so wanted to give them money. I have seen some Chinese give the beggars money, but most ignore them. I wondered if the problems here are the same as in America? Do beggars often squander the money on drugs, cigarrettes or alcohol as we see happen in America? Or are we in America ... read more

July 17, 2008 We went shopping this evening. Again things change, so many upscale and rather upscale stores. We did a lot of looking - not much buying! Tomorrow evening Mr. Wan is going to try to make an appointment for us at the blind man massage hospital. He told us when we ask about massages in China we should be sure we ask for a blind man massage. He said massage has a bad name in China - that is massage are often not the type we think of, brings back memories of phone calls to our hotel in Beijing 4 years ago. Several of the youth got calls at 2 and 3 in the morning asking them if they wanted a massage! Hmmmm. Anyway all the Americans phones got turned off after that - ... read more

There are so many things to tell and so little time! Last night I was too tired to do much of anything. Tonight I have more time and am feeling better, and I have a bad computer. Isn't that just life! This was a busy day, and it has been a bit stressful the past few days. Megan and I came to China with a 30 day visa, but are staying 31 days (at least by our count). The other day (Monday I think, but I can't keep track any more, already feels like I have been here months!) our fearless leaders, Steve Ray and David Du, collected our passports so they could go to immigration and extend our visas. However they denied it. I tried to call Asiana to change our plane tickets. BOY THAT ... read more

This has definitely been a long day with all the trials and tribulations. I could barely drag my butt out of bed this morning to start off with. Lunch, would could have been bad, ended up okay. The school we teach for has arranged for us to eat meals at our hotel. Like most good hotels in China they have a restaurant, however, we have determined they only serve lunch and dinner. We eat in our own private room three times a day, however, at breakfast we are the only ones there. They obviously buy food out on the street and bring it to us. Plus our sweet little waitress is not there to take care of us in the morning. At lunch and dinner she is always there with big smiles. She has the air ... read more
