It's in China, still. Although I am not I am still behind on my updates. We got into Luoyang on the 25th of July. We had to struggle to squeeze onto the metro and I think I almost crushed a girl with my backpack on the way out (I'm going to assume not my fault as they won't wait for passengers to get off the train before pushing to get on). Then got to share our train carriage with a nice chap who didn't understand too much english and certainly didnt get the concept of Su Dokus (don't mention the Japanese!) so got lots of sleep on the train and arrived to Luoyang feeling nice and refreshed (ahem) We got to the station to the usual hassle, somehow they can always spot the tourists, or at ... read more

We have done so much in the last few days that we have decided just to concentrate on the highlights. We took a night train from Nanjing to Keifeng for a 10 hour trip, travelling soft sleeper. Hard sleeper folk sit up all night but we softies got bunk beds in a four bunk compartment. The corridor of the carriage was filled with cigarette smoke and we were apprehensive about our roomies-to-be. Fortunately when they turned up neither of them smoked and we were able to get a decent nights rest, arriving in Keifeng at 7.20 a.m. I had woken at 6 and we stopped at one or two stations, none of which had their name anywhere in English and so I was worried that we would not know when we reached our stop. Fortunately ... read more

We ventured next to Zhengzhou to visit the Shaolin temple. We treated ourselves to a nice hotel and had a hotel car drive us to the temple, it was great to be able to afford such luxuries. At the temple we saw the Shaolin monks performing their martial arts in a show, it was very impressive. We also saw young monks practicing around the temple grounds, a Shaolin monk school. The monks were friendly, some of them wanting to practice their English with us. After Zhengzhou we went to Shanghai, the best place to shop! Shanghai was much cleaner and more welcoming than the other places we had visited which had sometimes been a bit of a struggle. The Chinese culture is very different to ours and almost no-one speaks English, except in Shanghai (not that ... read more

Not long left now and I am currently in Luoyang visiting the Shaolin monks. I left Chengdu on an overnight sleeper train to Xi'an which went smoothly and actually got a good nights sleep by tying a zip top around my head covering my face. It was good to arrive in Xi'an (a city with around 8million people known for its shopping). The guesthouse was literally opposite the Bell Tower, the centre point of the walled city and the first day was spent exploring the muslim quarter with its antique shops, tea houses (and shops). The following day we went to see the Terracotta Warriors and museum....something you have see when in China but was a little disappointed. From Xi'an to Luoyang was a 6hr train....very pleasantly surprised by the trains out here so far. ... read more

We made it to take Melinda and her boyfriend to go with us to Kaifeng. The train was sick. It was sooo crowded. I don’t know how but we had to stand about 2 hours before we get to the destination station. It’s the city with the Legendary Judge Bao. The city has more cultural ambience than most developing cities in China. We went around the town then had a lunch at a crowded restaurat. We had to wait a long time to get our seats then shared it with other guests, but for my first time taste of xiao long bao, it was definitely worth it. We went to this tallest pagoda tower. They said it’s the tallest, but I don’t know if the tower was the tallest in the world, in asia, in china, ... read more

My first outside Beijing trip. At this point I haven’t picked up enough Mandarin to do a trip to out of town. So glad I have my fluent mandarin pal -who has been taking care of me since the day I got in Beijing- going with me. Well actually I was going with him. We bought the train tickets to Henan province. My first time on a train with sleepers. We got the upper ones. The train’s atmosphere is really something for me, people talked to each other, visiting other people’s and introduce themselves to have a chat, even to play Chinese chess, every once in a while this cart passed by selling everything they yell every of it. “Kuang Quan Shui, Fangbian Mian, Kekou Kele” (Mineral water, Instant Noodles, Coca Cola), over and over. ... read more

Arduously rising at dawn we caught the Kung Fu spectacle given by the acolytes at the Song Shan Shaoling Temple, the birthplace of Kung Fu. It was awesome, these guys moved faster than anyone ive seen (much to fast to get a decent photo) and showed off stunts of strength and speed like piercing a glass sheet with a needle, breaking metal bars on foreheads, and generally anything that gave the impression that they could kick anybody's ass at will. The place itself was set amongst the impressive Song Shan mountain range which according to the Daoists is the centre of the World. Not far from here we went to see the Longmen Caves; a ravine side grotto of over two kilometres of continous buddhist sculpture dating from between 200-400 AD. Absolutely every available space has ... read more

Luoyang - 10.02.06 The 10th Feb was a pretty hectic day. Not only did we visit the Shaolin temple (previous entry) we also just managed to get a bus to Luoyang - over an hour away - and visit the Longmen caves before catching a midnight train to Xi'an. The Longmen caves are over 100,000 images and statues of the budda carved into the cliffs by the Yi River. Some are straight onto the cliff face and others are in little grottos. Many of the buddas have been partly destroyed over the years (souvenir hunters apparently) but it is still worth visiting if only for the Ancestor Worshipping Temple which is a large cave carved around AD 672 with a massive seated budda. We had a peaceful 2 hours stroll along the river and I had ... read more

Shaolin Temple - 10.02.06 Shaolin Si is a Buddist temple in the area of the Song Shan mountain range. It is famous for being the place where Kung Fu was invented so we had to make a brief stop here on our way through to Xi'an. Without going into any boring details it was a bit of a drama to get there/get in (partly but not entirely our own fault) but in the end it was worth all the hassle. The temple itself is a fairly standard one as buddist temples go (we have seen many, many temples now!) and there is a pagoda forest which we wandered around for a while but the highlight of the visit was definitely the Kung Fu show put on by students of the academy. Children as young as eight ... read more

Kaifeng is good, unlike all other Chinese cities weve been to town planners have restricted the hight of buildings to three stories, resulting in an atmospheric humanist enviroment. Charm is especially abundant at 6.15 each evening as a night market opens in the town centre creating a bustling gastronomic extravaganza with speciality foods from all over the country. Weve enjoying some delicious Uighur kebabs, spiced lamb roti, baozi (as opposed to jaozi), hand pulled noodles, and an unidentified strange looking but tasty desert of fruits, seeds, nuts and herbs swimming in a milky ectoplasm: all in one day and two nights! With the little time leftover from our eating weve visited the tourist sights. Longting park, including dragon pavilion, turned out to be the worlds naffest attraction: Gaudy luminously technicolour banners and floats, and an awful ... read more
