Slept in today and then had a leisurely breakfast before heading out for a day of sightseeing. I had 3 planned stops: The 3 Gorges Museum, The People's Square and Great Hall, and the Stilwell Museum. I found the 3 Gorges Museum with no trouble. Which is a miracle considering how messed up the bus system is in this town. The museum was huge and beautiful. And really warm. I mean, I know it was 90 and sunny out, but aren't museums supposed to feel just a little air conditioned? The 3 Gorges exhibit had 2 parts: the damn and the lives of people who lived there. They also had an exhibit on ancient civilizations that lived there and artifacts. Then there was the exhibit on the city of Chongqing and its development. It was interesting ... read more

Having booked ourselves onto a three night Yangtze River trip (not the luxurious cruise that you may have in mind) in our last hostel, we made our way to Chongqing, a huge city that marks the beginning of our river adventure. We left Xi'an on an overnight hard sleeper from a busy, warm and dirty train station. Having waited for the stampede of Chinese passengers to enter the train we leisurely strolled on. We met a trio of Netherlanders in the hostel who were on the same train and the three of us marveled at the lengths that the passengers went to in order to ensure that they were on the train as quickly as possible. You could tell that they were already fuming that the train was running a whopping 11 minutes late. We made ... read more

The Yangtze Three Gorges—A legend through past and present Yangtze is the largest river of China, the third largest one in the world. She’s s also considered the mother river of our Chinese that created our culture and civilization. While the river flows through the mountain area covers Chongqing city and Hubei Province those twists and turns formed the Three Gorges, one of the most known to go and to learn in China. The Three Gorges area created quite different and unique civilization from northern China in culture, native tribes called “Bha” established several independent states since ancient but not as strong as those ones in north. Basically got started with Woo-do things—a mixture of natural and ghosts worship. Natives believe there existed giant snakes all over the place, ppl consider them sort of Lords control ... read more

Day 9-11 (March 22-24) We set out the following day for Chongqing by train, 4 hours. It was very comfortable and good to look out at the scenery. Lunch was of course noodles on the train which is the staple fare for train travel. Our leader arranged for the local hostel where we were going to have dinner to pick us up (better than the crowded local bus). Arriving on the Yangtze waterfront winding down from the hill. The tide was well out and so there were many pontoons aligned to make a pathway out to our Cruise boat. We were lucky to be able to check in early to stow our luggage before setting out for an early dinner. As Chongqing is built into the hillsides that rise from the banks of the Yangtze there ... read more

Stick Army, or Stick Man, an unofficial urban title for those porters active in Chongqing, a Yangtze riverside located mountain city with a large coutry area and unique hilly landform. Their payment comes from carrying and labor jobs, they all have families at home, they are fathers, husbands, sons and brothers. They are making huge contribution for the city. Chongqing located in upstream Yangtze nearby the Three Gorges where strong current is quite frequent. Hundreds years ago, ppl needed to hire boat trackers pulling boats upstream while salt, tea, silk and other goods need to be transferred from Yangtze Delta through the Three Gorges all the way hit Chongqing and even further to entire Sichuan Province. On arrival unloading those cargo ships would be those porters job. The boat trackers and porters would have been how ... read more

It's actually "Chinese English". Been years that those Chinglish signs, tags, advertisings, posters, menus or something like that pretty much entertained lots tourists, it even became a real joyful activity to learn those Chinglish things. Ppl never blame or deride those who don't get English right, it's fully understandable those non-native English sperkers geniusly created different style "English" for we don't always have enough native speakers to practice with. However that's real funny. Not only Chinese, this kind of local style "English" is universal. Ppl also named the Japanese style English category as "Engrish". Honestly as a Chinglish speaker myself I don't really get the funny spirit of Engrish. hoho Anyway please don't even try to terminate Chinglish, Engrish, Singlish or any so so "glish", that's part of the fun of travel, that even get ppl from ... read more

Since China had already started series of new policies 30 years ago our entire country changed so much and so fast. However the modern part they globally look all the same. Only the old remained shows tradition and the real life this is also universal. It is apparently a waste of time to travel through all those big cities for ppl who wonna learn modern side of China, but the old part is total different between different areas for our culture is a sort of mixture from different sources. ... read more
