A MUCH better day today. For a start, MY BACKPACK ARRIVED!!!! Went downstairs in the morning just on the off-chance, and there it was! Minus a minor hand sanitiser explosion, all is well with it, although I'm definitely keeping those 'Quick Transfer' and 'Expidite This Baggage' labels (aye RIGHT) as war medals! So I had a pretty nice morning of generally looking at outfits that weren't my travelling outfit, and having a good long shower (a cool shower...!), then headed to Tiananmen Square. Was pretty buzzing, lots of people, lots of staring but was all good... funniest moment was definitely when a tiny child just about sparked a major incident by making a break for the Chinese flag in front of the Forbidden City! Suddenly there was police everywhere, and a highly embarrassed mum! The only ... read more

A rather Henning Mankell-esque title, don't you think? But a scaff in Beijing is precisely what I am! This has been a twenty-four-and-a-bit hours of extremes; what a welcome back to China. The good news: I have made it to Beijing, I am in an okayish (room's a bit scruffy around the edges and the bed has possibly the hardest excuse for a 'mattress' ever, but it's clean and there's aircon) hostel, very near Tiananmen Square, and the flight was on time, so on and so on. The bad news: my backpack, my carefully-packed, containing EVERYTHING backpack, is not. Or at least, it may be in China now, but it's not at the hostel, and I'm going to have to phone them tomorrow, cos I'm heading to Xi'an on Thursday. OK, so the backpack saga first, ... read more

Today, we got to get up a little later at 8 AM for another day of sights in Beijing before heading to Xi'an. First we head to Tian An Men Square, where the crowd was lighter than I expected. It looked like there were more venders than tourists in the square. The square was roped off and we had to go through x-ray check of our bags to enter the square. ... read more

I set out fairly early to try and find a mobile phone and Chinese SIM card, which I did, and, despite haggling, am sure I bought at extortionate price. I took the opportunity, in so-doing, to explore the area around the hostel a bit. The hostel is situated in the Dongcheng district, which is a maze of passages and alleys about 20 minutes walk north of the Forbidden City. The alleyways - or hutongs as they are called here - are small and winding, filled with shops (or are they private homes?), street vendors and building works. Once you get off the main axes, you rarely see a foreigner. Having wandered round the hutongs for a bit, I set off to walk past the Forbidden City to Tian'amen Sqaure (so called, I have only just learned, ... read more

I woke up expecting to be rough as hell and have a mouth like a badgers arse but far from it. I was just dehydrated. Today I would make up for the destruction of brain cells with a walk around the cultural sites of Tiananmen square and the Forbidden city. I set off in the direction of the Square. Tiananmen square is much bugger that you may expect. There are large buildings all around including a museum and of course statues to the uprising of the communist part. Just through the gate are the Forbidden city. The seat of power in china for generations. The city has temples, gardens and alleyways that seem to run for miles. While the city is vast one can’t help feel sorry for the emperors that were confined here in this ... read more

Thanks to the update I left on Facebook explaining the ban in China and that it would be over a month before I could respond to any posts one of my German relative sent me details on family I had living in Beijing, a Great Uncle. I made contact and we arranged to meet at Ritan park for lunch the next day in a German restaurant called Schindlers Tankstelle. When we met we started with some drinks of course, I had a pig knuckle with sauerkraut, it was brilliant, the largest meal since I left home, it was so big I took what was left of it away in a doggy bag for dinner. My grand cousin joined us as well, someone id only met once when I was four. I didn’t even know he lived ... read more

The next day was a bust. I was out the door at 8 hoping to get a seat on the train to Beijing, I got to the station to find out standing room only again or I could pay more than double the seat fare for a sleeper berth. This time I managed to book a ticket to Beijing for the next morning so back to the hostel...again! I met up with one of the teachers from the house party and we went for coffee then a group of us went to a western style restaurant which actually had fair pricing, we ate well for £2 a head. When morning came I went to the station yet again. It would be nice to get away from the crowded streets and all the hype about the 2010 ... read more

A crash course to Beijing As I have told you before I had a transfer at Beijing Capital Airport on my way to Japan. The stop was seven hours so prior to my arrival I had arranged a visa. The flight was early and I went straight for the immigration. The airport was build for the 2008 olympics and it's really an impressive sight. The immigration process went very smooth and I didn't have to use my visa for my entry this time since I was to return to the airport for a flight later that day. After taking a high-tech train ride to the arrival hall I was able to take the airport express into the city. At that time it felt like I had done my daily work out already. Travelling in Beijing with ... read more
