We arrived in Beijing shortly after sunrise to find the smog had lifted and the sun was shining brightly in a brilliant blue sky. After leaving our bags at the hotel we set off for Tianannmen Square. Have I mentioned that China has a lot of people? It seemed that most of them had arrived in Beijing to visit Mao's tomb - the queue to enter the building was hours long and the square was crowded with chinese tourists. Internal tourism has taken off in a big way over the last few years and international tourism is taking a back seat. You can buy Chairman Mao watches and alarm clocks here which are reminiscent of the Mickey Mouse watch that Sylvia bought in Syria many years ago which failed after two days. There are various other ... read more

On day 2 , it's our last day in Beijing so there is a bit of a panic among the group to see everything we possibly can! The pressure! We meet a local tour guide Kevin first thing in the morning and he takes us over to Tian'anmen Square. We can barely delay here to take pictures as Kevin is anxious to keep us moving - there are loads and loads of guards around the place and Kevin tells us not to take photos of the guards in any position and especially not if they are reprimanding someone in any way.......you get the general picture. Charmain Maos body is displayed in a mausoleum in the Square and the queue to get in is phenomenal. Strangely, the queue is made up of mostly Chinese people themselves......but who ... read more

Kaikki on suureellista ja jarjestelmallista! Etsimme asken nettikahvilaa: aluksi emme loytaneet mitaan vaan ajauduimme syomaan ja basaarikujille, ja kun sitten loysimme paikan, taalla on yli sata upouutta konetta muhkeine ergonomisesti muotoiltuine tuolineen. Ennen kuin paasimme koneille, piti nayttaa passit, tayttaa papereita, kuvauttaa itsemme ja maksaa pantti. Voisin aloittaatarinani siita, mihin viimeksi jain. Tasta guesthousista jai kylla muuten tosi hyva maku suuhun. Jurtat katolla olivat hyvin kodikkaita, siella nukutti tosi makoisasti, suihkut toimivat ja katolla oli viihtyisaa lueske... read more

September 12/08- Arrived in Beijing and found our hostel in an area near the lama temple, about a 15 minute taxi ride from the forbidden city and Tian'anamen square. We also went to a large market where we purchased a vast majority of items such as knock off shoes, shirts, and bags. ... read more

We're sad. We're right at the end of our eight days in Beijing. Part of us is a little disappointed, also, that we didn't have the time to get over to Tibet or some of the other areas of China. This, however, will probably make us eager to make another trip here sometime in the future. We'll have plenty of time to explore Japan by train over the next two weeks anyway, so we don't want to tire of train travel before we can cash in our Japan Rail pass. Our few days since the last blog entry have been fairly peaceful and pretty hot. I would say we've had an average daytime temperature of 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit. We've also been interviewed twice in the last couple of days. The first time was while we ... read more

More belated photos that have been rediscovered from the many memory cards and cds wedged under my bed. For those of you who had noted the missing trip between South Korea and Mongolia: no I don't not fly, and I didn't hitchhike through North Korea either, as pleasant as it sounds. I did in fact touch touch in Qindao by taking the weidong ferry from Incheon near Seoul. As I have forgotton much of the details of the journey I will try and consult the diary I was keeping at the time and try and find an opportunity to update this blig with some more detail. But in the mean time, for those of you who might be following this trip as a way to do it yourself i will give you the details on how ... read more

We got done at The Forbidden City and went across the street to Tian’anmen Square. Everything was very nice, lots of flowers, people, and some new Olympic monuments. We had wanted to see Chairman Mao but viewing hours are 8 am to 12 noon, we missed it.... read more

Today, Wedesday in China, we are playing tourist. Today we shopped until we dropped. We did sleep late - got up about 9:30am. Since we were up late, we missed breakfast. Finally had a great lunch on the street at around 2:00. Down one of the Hutong alleys. Had to GUMBA (bottoms up) some pee-joe to mark our last day in China. We have been going and spending all day! We started with a trip to calligraphy alley. Megan want to get some scrolls for her nieces. We got some awesome piece from a Christian couple who's shop we had visited 3 weeks ago. Megan had one scroll personalized by adding a bike rider for a friend of hers. I had one made for me and found another framed piece for a friend. We also bargained ... read more

After visiting the temple of heaven park we caught the subway from the east gate, 东门, to wangfujing to eat dinner and catch the night market. Wangfujing is definitely not the place to get a very authentic chinese experience and it also makes me thankful that i live on other, much more cheap, side of town. This famous tourist street is known for its western shopping malls and 'glamor'. Restaurants are overpriced and only so-so in my book. Starting at 6pm and ending at 10pm is the night market, where one can eat a variety of delicious treats...such as cocoons, scorpions, lizards, sea cucumbers, and variety of other things all on a stick! its all pretty good and pretty safe. Dont let this place fool you into thinking this is genuine Beijing or Chinese culture. The ... read more
