Day 3 - Beijing Weather in beijing is really good today. It was sunny and about 1 degree Celcius. Not the minus 6 Celcius that we expect :) The tour was smooth..even the tour manager (Beijing) commented that it was pretty good. He is very experienced n I really enjoyed the tour explanation ... It was the first time I set foot on Tian-an men square and we had a couple of group shots. The group was pretty cohesive. One thing that strike me was that everyone on the group was on the look-out for one another, and the spirit of serving was very very high...even our Tianjing tour guide, Xiao Niu acted as a photographer plus "bell-boy" :) The professionalism of the tour guides here never fail to impress me...they are knowledgeable and proud of their ... read more

Getting off of the Great Wall was sweet; Alpine Slide. Kind of cheesy and touristy, but I had a great time zooming on the little sled after several hours of climbing stairs. With our tour came a lunch, and after waiting a bit for everyone in the group to come down we had a pretty awesome meal. There were eight dishes brought out mostly similar to chinese food you would get in America but oh so much better. I especially enjoyed the glazed pork as the sauce was cleaner and more flavorful than anything you can get back home. As we got back on our bus we had picked up some extra travelers. A Russian family that spoke almost no English had found there way onto the bus; we were pretty sure the got screwed by ... read more

Our last day was meant to be investigating the Temple of Heaven, but the Hostel had arranged our sleeper train to Xi'an wrong so spent much of the day trying to get an alternative trip to Xi'an. We saw the Tibetan Llama temple, and we also had a look around Wanfujing shopping malls which were impressive, loads of designer shops, we bought a new Backpack and had some tea and an early night.... read more

After some final Japanese cuisine for breakfast we head to Narita airport set for Beijing. We had to fly in via Dalian, where we had to jump off then wait a little then jump back on. Stupidly I was still in Japanese weather mode. Dalian was COLD and I was in a t-shirt!! Laura was smug in her big warm coat and fleece!! Another hour on the plane and we were in Beijing. Beijing was busy, busy, busy. Multiple people trying to get me in their taxi to central Beijing, but instead we hopped on the shuttle bus. On setting foot outside of the airport I knew winter had begun, it was absolutely freezing and pitch black! The roads were an experience even just as a passenger, even more noticeable when we got a taxi to ... read more

Today we awoke earlier than the alarm as our hotel room was so HOT! It is freezing outside today but hot inside. We headed downstairs for a buffet breakfast in the hotel and wow, you can eat just about anything. They have the usual western breakfast plus an oriental breakfast such as fried rice, noodles, dumpling, spring rolls, etc. It was a little too early for me to eat oriental so I had a western breakfast followed by waffles with chocolate sauce and cream. After that had a platter of fruit and a berry smoothy shot (literally in a shot glass). Tamara was a little more game and ate some oriental breakfast also! We managed to sneak out 2 Bananas for our morning tea and headed out for the day. We decided to walk and not ... read more

Needless to say I only got to the airport 30minutes before my flight was due to take off so the China Air booking lady promptly told me I wouldn’t be getting on the flight bound for Beijing at 1:05 seeing some distress in my face she immediately started to check up on the later flight and not 5 minutes, after telling me I has in fact missed my flight, proceeded to inform me that in actual fact I was never booked on the 1:05 flight in the first place (contrary to my e-ticket) and that I was in actual fact only booked on the 6:30 flight......and so the mad travels began. It seems that no adventure that I embark on will ever just be smooth sailing but hey let’s be honest I think I thrive on ... read more

Day 489: Saturday 31st October - A Tibetan temple in Beijing and the Bird’s nest I arrive back in the capital at approaching 9am after my 10 hour overnight train journey from Hohhot. Every train journey I have taken in China has been on my own and I have been the only foreigner in my carriage on each occasion with all eyes fixed on me. Next time I’m on the train, in just 36 hours time it will be with two friends (one who I’ve still to meet) on my way to Tibet. That promises to be a very different experience. My first visit to Beijing had the sub-plot of arranging Tibet, my second is running the clock down until I depart for Tibet. I’ve seen all of Beijing’s major sights so this time if I ... read more

Last Friday the two of us boarded the overnight express train, Z29, from Yangzhou to Beijing. Around 6:30 a.m. we arrived to a beautiful, clear, crisp Beijing. The main objective of this trip north was to run in the Beijing International Marathon. Our traveling companions consisted of my running buddy Asunsun Halim, his wife, Gyu, their dangerously cute 19-month-old son Eugene, and four other co-teachers; four of which ran in either the half or full marathon. It was now the third weekend in October we had spent in the Northern Capital and we felt like we were returning to an old college campus or past neighborhood… except on a slightly different scale. On Saturday we visited a restaurant near the Beijing Drum and Bell Towers and had ourselves a pre-race pasta feed. China style. Anyone can ... read more

Ni-Hao, Power failure, lost all my work - crap! Will try and re-create it, but might not be as funny :( Biking in Beijing is like playing Frogger or Chicken. Rentals don't have top of the line brakes, but most are armed with a bell. Hutongs are narrow and in order to navigate effectively amongst the vendors, pedestrians, cats, dogs and cars, it is best to ring that bell often because you will get cut off a million times. Plow forward and for God's sake don't be polite! This ain't Vancouver, this is China. Crossing the massive football-sized intersections can be entertaining. Local Beijingers like to get a head start so they begin crossing early which causes quite a bit of chaos and horn blaring from the drivers. When the light finally turns green, don't get ... read more
