This morning Jie and I got an early start and went to Tian'anmen Square but didn't look at the zombie of Mao Zedong yet. We're doing that later this week. (Every Communist country preserves the body of their first leader in the capital and put it on display - Lenin, Mao, Kim Jung Song). Today we went straight for the Forbidden City. It was still a little foggy but we had a great time. First you have to go through Tian'anmen Square, then take an underground tunnel under the main road, to the other side right outside the Forbidden City. Even from far away at the back of Tian'anmen Square you can see the huge portrait of Mao Zedong on the wall above the gate to the Forbidden City. After you get to the other ... read more

Ich las ueber Betruege ... read more

Het ... read more

Sunday July 11, 2010 Today Rich and I are alone, no interpreter, no driver just the two of us and two bright Red Guide books that say Beijing. I think they also say in Chinese: Lost Traveler, Money, Westerner, Gullible! Honestly you would think Frommer's and Fodor's would start making travel books that look like Pride and Prejudice written in Mandarin. They would be hot sellers. So we get going around 9am and grab a cab outside our hotel and head towards Tiananmen Square. The weather was overcast but honestly it is hard to tell what is weather related and what is pollution related. Those great little guide books had told us to enter the Forbidden City from the Tiananmen Square side. Since we also wanted to spend some time in the square we felt this ... read more

Last night, I ended up going out to a Xinjiang Restaurant in a hutong just two blocks from the Super 8 and it was a good little hike through winding alleys and bunches of old people playing majhong. I got several of my favorite Western Chinese specialties: spicy pulled noodles and goat skewers. The noodles were phenomenal and I could literally have just eaten bowl after bowl of that for all I cared. I also decided to order a skewer of lamb chops and sheep kidneys. The chops were fine but the kidney made me nauseous beyond belief. The taste was so-so, but the texture and appearance was foul. One of the kidneys still had intestine attached to it and that about put me off. The best part of the meal, other than the atmosphere, beautiful ... read more

Today we completed the rest of the super touristy area's in Beijing. We started off at the Forbidden City. To be honest - I thought it would be a lot more interesting. Buuttttt it wasn't really. Just some more red buildings with the fancy roofs and the blue paint, etc, etc... Binnson seemed interested when the guide was talking about the Emperor having 3000 wives that he could pick and choose from whenever he wanted. Next stop, Tienanmen square... we walked through the square and took a couple pictures. It's eerie to walk through, not that our guide breathed a word about anything other than the good events that occur there. Afterward, we went to a Chinese Herbal Medicine center. Here a doctor took our pulse and looked at our tongues and faces and determined what ... read more

So, I write this email with a sore body from playing basketball over the past two days. When I first played 2 days ago with 2 other Black guys from the IU-Indy law program (legit Africans, Arsene and Kofi), I realized the Chinese love basketball, and they love to play against Americans. These guys are bruisers and play very physical. People would surround the court watching us play. And we suck... relative to US standards! Friday we took a tour of our campus and a group of us walked outside of the campus for about 5 hours. We went to a mall and some electronic stores. One of the electronic stores we went to was very suspect. It was like going to Chinatown in NYC: we had to go down an escalator to take an elevator ... read more

I finally made it to the Forbidden City today and was, frankly, disappointed. I have two theories why this is: one, because the architecture is very similar to that of the Summer Palace and, having spoken with people who saw the Forbidden City first and then were disappointed with the Summer Palace, I believe that you are impressed by whichever one you see first and then let down by the second. The Forbidden City was certainly vast and the sheer size was impressive, but it was also a detracting point as I found it hard to navigate and quite samey in places. My second theory is that the immense crowds and heat detracted from the experience for me, especially as I was quite tired today. Anyway, I saw the sights and it was very impressive. I ... read more

We did not know when or how long our Labor Day holiday would be until the day before it came (typical Chinese notification). With much excitement I immediately booked a flight to Beijing where Jay and I would reunite with 3 awesome Americans we met in Yangshuo. We were only there for 3 days, but during those days we ate as much Mexican food as possible, and enjoyed luxuries like rum, tequila, a night life, and foreigners. Then we reluctantly competed with thousands of visiting Chinese to see the Forbidden City. **Photo caption hilarity is brought to you by Jay**... read more
