Spanek zas nic moc. Nakonec sa definitivne preberam o 5.30. Po sprche spraveny check in a smer bus. Som tam uz o 6.30 Vsade kopa ludi, motorky, stanky s jedlom, rozne krabice a busy. K busom sa je umenie dostat. Znacenie destinacii je ubohe. Vodic na bus nalepi papier kde je destinacia a cas odchodu. Medzi 6.30 - 7.30 odchadza asi 6 busov. Zadne nastupistia ale busy stoja pri kraji cesty. Ludia sa tlacia, drbnute odparkovane motorky. Totalny bordel. Idem cez cestu na ranajky. Ryza s fajn masickom. Posilneny nazad k busom. Je za 5min 7. No moj bus nikde. Pytam sa jedneho sofera, ten nevi. Idem k pultiku s listkami, ta mi len ukazuje smer a ze mam cakat. Pultik tez debilny. Predava tu asi 6 bab, destinacie maju nalepene na spodu stolika. Ten vsak ... read more

Kampot was our first stop in Cambodia. We find the currency super confusing to figure out. Cambodians use US dollars and riel, 50/50. So you might pay in riel and get change in dollars or vice versa. Annoyingly your dollar notes have to be pristine otherwise they won’t be accepted. My 50 dollar bill had the tiniest rip and no where would take it. Bloody nightmare. We went on a tour up Mount Bokor; one of the main draws of Kampot province. Mount Bokor is far from a normal mountain. The French colonials took over the land leading up the mountain and constructed buildings such as luxury hotels, police stations, schools and churches to create a retreat for colonial residents in the early 1920’s. The buildings have since been abandoned, leaving a ghostly historical landmark in ... read more

I was where I had always wanted be ever since back in 1998 as I was devouring Rough Guide’s First-Time Asia. Here I was up on a mystical mountain shrouded in mist. The only westerner in sight. Bells and chimes ringing all around me. It was a festival day and everyone was clamoring about in a festive mood and making offerings before altars. Where was I? I was on Bokor Mountain. What is crazy is this whole scene almost didn’t happen. That is because around 4am I was awoken by a powerful rumbling in my guts that shook my very foundations. I quickly was forced to make a mad dash to the toilet. Yessir, let the fun begin. Spicy fruit and yogurt salad the night before had definitely been an overconfident order. The whole episode lasted ... read more

The hostel staff tried to talk us out of it, saying the bus was much cheaper, but we wouldn’t hear any of it. We were going to hire a car. They said it might be difficult to arrange due to Chinese New Year, but after yesterday there was no way I was going to be stuck on a bus for a second straight day. Besides Stacey never minds a bit of luxury. So, a private car it was. A short time later a black car pulled up in front of the hostel. And out popped our driver sporting slicked back hair and wearing wrap around sunglasses and a “Thug Life” t-shirt. Stacey and I gamely piled into the backseat and we were on way to Kampot. There was a ton of holiday traffic, but I didn’t ... read more

Overnight we had torrential tropical rain and the roof of our converted barn/hotel being corregated steel, resounded to the impact all through the night. This put paid to our plans for a Boker National Park trek, revised plan originally was then to hire bicycles and cycle locally, but a short walk to Fish Island across the Kampot River, convinced us that the roads and track were all but impassable to two wheeled transport and the dark skies threatened more rain to come. Plan C, quick trip back to the hotel for more money and catch a bus to Kep. The bus was due to leave at 10am, we loaded onboard with a host of backpackers, who were mostly en route to Ho Chi Minh City (12 hour trip minimum). The bus was crowded and very hot. ... read more

Dreistigkeit siegt immer!

I’m glad Agata was driving and not me for the three hours it took us to drive down to the south coast. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. However on the last km, which was little more than a dirt track on either side of a shallow canal, we were rewarded with a magnificent display of lotus plants in flower. We have a beautiful riverfront room in Villa Verdici just on the outskirts of Kampot. You can swim in the fast flowing river but we opted for the pool which Alexander loved. So did we. I think the water temperature was the same as our pool at home but without the heating. Later in the afternoon a sand barge tried to anchor just off our place. The owner got very agitated, paddled out and ... read more

Today we left Phnom Penh for Kampot, which is a shame, I would like to have stayed a bit longer, it made more of an impression than Bangkok did on me. I feel like there is still more to see. The scenery seemed to change as we headed to Kampot, it was more rural, lush and green with more mountains in the distance too. Once we were arrived, we opted to go and visit the salt fields and the pepper plantation, before a crab lunch and then some chill time on the beach at Kep. The salt fields were certainly no Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia)! They only produce salt once a year, during the dry season, so there wasn't much to see. Just some dry fields and the salt store, where we could see the mounds ... read more

I made my way further to the East closer to the Vietnamese border and found myself in a small, quaint, and relaxing old French Colonial town by the name of Kampot. While I was here an unlikely friendship developed around a game that I have not been around much of late, but that I used to play all of the time when I was younger - billiards. At a worn down and tattered type of bar right on the river front; myself, a very sweet German girl Lea, the Swiss owner of the bar Stephan, and an old traveling gypsy of sorts from England named Gary played the nights away shooting stick, heckling one another, and having a great time together with the rock and roll of The Rolling Stones playing in the air. We were ... read more
