Well climbing the mountain was a lot of fun. It took us about an hour to climb up it and another two hours to walk around the crater and another 45 minutes to get back down. It is actually a volcanic crater that has been dorment for some time but it was cool because you could see the the steam rising from certain parts. Our Halloween party at the center was a lot of fun. It was nice to stay there overnight and be able to use "real" bathrooms. I am covered with bug bites though I think from planning manhunt. This Friday we find out where our sites will be and I'm pretty excited to be almost done with training. Nov 9th I finally found out what my placement will be I'll be doing microfinance ... read more

Salaam, from the sunny coastline of Alexandria on the Mediterranean Coast. It has been a busy couple of weeks since I wrote last. Since then I have visited the Valley of the Kings; rode donkeys, camels and horses (got thrown off one!); sailed down the Nile; walked up and down Mt. Sinai; relaxed on the beaches of the Red Sea; snorkeled over coral; did a 45m reverse bungy jump in Sham el Sheikh in Sinai; went to an Oasis 160 miles in the western desert and am now relaxing in Alexandria for the next two days before I take a bus back to Cairo Saturday morning for my flight to Bombay. I will be in India for the next 7 days before I fly to Katmandu. I am not sure when I will write next, because ... read more

So far training has not been that interesting. I really like the family I'm staying with and trying hard to adjust to no running water and no electricity. Nights are the hardest. Yesterday I found a giant spider in my room as I was writing a letter home and every once in awhile I find a cockroach in my bed. So far it's pretty hard to tell what I'm going to think about the next two years. Training is so much like being in school again that it's not much fun at all. It also been frustrating that communication with anyone back home is so hard. So far we have already lost one person. She was older and I guess just too set in her ways to adjust to the change. A bunch of us plan ... read more

Hi everyone, quick note to say there are new pics of the pyramids at Giza. No words can describe the pyramids and my few pictures do not do them justice. Can't say much because I am running a little late to catch the train to Aswan. I will be back in Cairo a week from tomorrow and will try e-mail new pics. Take care, Joel... read more

Salaam Ala Coomb, (for the non-Arabs, Hello) from the extremely hot jewel of the Nile - Cairo. I am certainly not in Kansas anymore, Toto. I arrived in Egypt Thursday night at 11:30 pm. I guess there is not a lot of people wanting to fly these days, especially to the Middle East. I flew on a Boeing 777, that usually carries 250-300 people. There was maybe 20 passengers on board. I wasn't sure what to expect when I got off the plane in Cairo, other than it was going to be hot. Sure enough it was hot (low to mid 20's at midnight). Lots of guards toting sub machine guns and locals wanting you to buy something or use their taxi. For you people who think I drive alittle fast or maybe alittle extreme at ... read more

Beach Holiday in Tunesia Our first holiday together. We went to Sousse for a relaxing holiday at the Tunesian coast. We stayed 2 weeks in hotel Tej Marhaba****. From there we made some trips around the country. The rest of our time we relaxed at the beach or the pool. We also did a boat trip along the coast of Sousse and Port El Kantaoui. Port El Kantaoui is a nice beach resort near Sousse. It an ideal place for a nice evening strolling around in the little village with nice shops, bars and restaurants. Trips we did during this holiday: - the capital Tunis, the charming village of Sidi Bou Saïd and the ruïns of Carthago - a 2-day trip to the south of Tunesia incl. the amphitheatre of El Jem, the troglodyte houses of ... read more

On the way to the Sinai, we stopped by the memorial for the President who was killed while making a speech for the Unknown Soldier. Going through the Suez Canal was pretty funny. It looked as though all of the ships were sailing over the sand. We found a nice little Oasis too, which we stopped in for a little while. It looked deserted, and as soon as we stepped off the bus, we were surrounded by little kids. They were so cute.... We stayed in a dorm style hotel, surrounded by the mountains of the Sinai. The pool was in the shape of a cross, and all of the rooms were same sex dorms. I liked it there, as it was a little different from the accommodation we had experienced on the trip so far. ... read more

We got another early wake up call. This time it was 5am. We crossed The Nile, and got fitted to our donkey's on the other side. The took us to The Valley of the Kings. The donkey ride was by far the best thing I have done whilst being in Egypt. I couldn't get the smile off my face. The Valley of the Kings was really big. Quite hard to walk around I found, as by 9.30am, it was so hot that we had all consumed a large amount of water each. We climbed up the side of a mountain to get a nice view, and met the donkey's at the top. After walking our donkey's along the top of the mountain for a while, we got a nice view of Queen Hatseheptsut's Temple. I wanted ... read more

The night train was pretty good. It was clean, so I was happy. I slept for most of the trip though. In Aswan, the hotel was right next to the bazaar, so it was nice to do a little shopping. In Aswan, we went to the Nubian Museum. I didnt find it too interesting, but then again, I just wanted to go out and see all of the temples. Our taxi driver was late in picking us up too, so it wasn't much fun roasting up in mid summer sun. We visited the Philae Temple. We had to get a little boat out to the island that Philae is on, so it was kind of relaxing. We were the only tourists there for a while (the perks of travelling through the summer).... I loved this temple. ... read more
