For about 3 consecutive years, I visited South Africa and only stopped in Johannesburg, however my luck changed when my boyfriend of 3 years Don, decided we needed some quality time and booked a 10 days trip to Cape Town in 2002. We began preparing for our trip three weeks ahead. Since I worked for a travel agency, I booked our trip through my company and had Don take care of the visa processing with the embassy. Being a diplomat and all, getting our visas was a breeze once the embassy had the tickets, hotel reservation and the bank statements needed to prove we were returning back to the country of origination. It never ceases to amaze me the requirements for visas in my country (well foreign embassies in my country especially). By the time we ... read more

Africa » Morocco May 18th 2002

Once we left Puerta Vallarta we returned to Mecixo City, spent a night, then flew up to New York where we spent 5 days. I fell in love with the place immediately. We stayed near Times Square and did the usual tourist activities such as walking around Central Park, the Guggenheim, all the Villages, Brooklyn Bridge etc. Can't wait to return. Next stop is Morocco. We entered Morocco via Casablanca, spent the night then got the first train out to Marrakesh some four hours away. Our time in Marrakesh was spent at a psychedelic little hotel just off the frantic main square, down a very narrow laneway. The rooftop gave panoramic views over the mainly terracotta-coloured city, a date palm here and there, and a backdrop of the snow-covered High Atlas Mountains. A nice place where ... read more

Africa » Egypt May 1st 2002

Four countries in 2 weeks make a lot of material for this update. On April 14th, after 51 days of rice, I finally left Asia for Egypt, but not before relaxing for 4 days in the South of Thailand and making my way via Malaysia to Singapore. Watch my Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore VideoBlog ! A FEW DAYS OF ISLAND R&R I chose Koh Lanta, a relatively little known island just across from Kho Phi Phi where "The Beach" was filmed. Its mostly deserted beaches have "Chunks Ahoy" rocks baked into cookie coloured sand. The water temperature was a spa-like 34 degrees C - soothing if not refreshing. I did a bit of swimming, some reading and quite a lot of pacing up and down the beach. What you rent here is called a bungalow but that can mean ... read more

Botswana's Chobe Game Park is noted for a great place to see elephants. On our game drive, we saw leopard, lion, elephants, cape buffalo, hippos, giraffe, impala, kudu, warthogs, and even 2-week-old lions. Fabulous place.... read more

Africa » Seychelles » Mahé April 18th 2002

Our Honeymoon in Seychelles Islands, located in the Indian Ocean was the ultimate romantic trip of our lives. We flew Air Seychelles from Bombay airport with a stopover in Mauritius and arrived in Victoria, the exotic capital of the island Mahe. We took a cab to our hotel, The Coral Strand where we were staying for a week. Coral Strand Hotel is nestled in the Beau Vallon Bay, the most famous beach on Mahe. I was glad that our room had no TV; it was our honeymoon after all and who needs TV ; ). We had a sea facing room with a cute little balcony. It was the perfect spot to share a bottle of champagne which we did on our first night there! Mahé boasts 65 silver beaches, plus an array of restaurants, cafés, ... read more

Africa » Madagascar » Nosy Be December 7th 2001

December 2001 Picture in your mind clear turquoise seas gently lapping over secluded white beaches, palm trees swaying in the light breeze, a yacht moored in the bay. Hot days and balmy nights, swimming, diving, fishing, snorkelling, or just strolling on the beach. Sounds like bliss, doesn't it? Of course it is, but this time I am not going to bore you with an account of how wonderful it is - ok, you’ve got me, of course I am, but at the same time I am going to tell you of about a few things that could have made this trip a disaster if we weren’t able to get things sorted and under control. We decided to do another trip to Madagascar, this time in December 2001. It made such an impact on us the first ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Nairobi Province » Nairobi November 21st 2001

Well tommorrow will be my first Thankgiving in Kenya and I'll be spending it at dinner with the ambassador, his family and a few other volunteers. I've never been so excited for a turkey dinner in my life. The last few weeks have been pretty tough with the problems I had with my site visit and then finding another site which I finally get to see on Friday. It sounds pretty cool but so did the other one so I'll let you know how things turn out. On Sunday a bunch of us have hired a car to take us to Lake Nakuru. There's a big park there with rhinos and flamingos that is supposed to be really cool. ... read more
