So far South Africa was too western for our travelling tastes, especially after our time in Asia. We enjoyed doing stuff but it was also a little too expensive and the seperation between the whites and the blacks seemed large to us - naturally enough given the country's history I guess. As we would progress further north this seperation would decrease and we found ourselves enjoying things more. I guess I didn't come to Africa to hang out in isolated white settlements with Gap year students from the UK - not that there is anything wrong with that. In Stormsriver we did the largest bungee jump in the world - couldn't pass that without the jump. It was 216m high and the freefall was quite amazing. We also took a walk around an indigenous forest and ... read more

We decided to try and hitch from Hermanus to Stormsriver - the next stop up the East coast of South Africa. We didn't have much success as we just got one ride in 2 hours and that was only for 15 minutes to Caledon. When we got to Caledon we ate some Fish and Chips - unfortunately the White South African's diet seems to consist of Meat Pies and Fish and Chips - I wonder where they got that from... and then booked the next bus to Stormsriver - which was the next morning. There wasn't much in the way of places to stay in Caledon so the guy at Tourist info set us up at a hotel with a Greek Island Theme... where I got to watch ManU draw with Arsenal on Satellite TV. The ... read more

...had a 200kg Silverback Gorilla throw a tree at you? No?! Well, we have. You want more details?!?! Well, OK then... We spent an awesome hour watching a family of gorillas in Ugandas Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. There was the mighty silverback, blackbacks, females, juveniles and a three month old baby. They were wandering round the undergrowth feeding, and we were hacking our way through the undergrowth trying to watch them. There were three people in our group (a maximum of six are allowed to watch any one group per day), along with a guide, three trackers and three armed guards. The hike into the forest was not easy, but well worth it. We would have paid again the next day to see the gorillas a second time if we had the cash on us! Hopefully ... read more

Next stop was Hermanus and we took the Baz Bus which is a backpackers bus which stops at backpackers all around South Africa. We only took this bus a few times when local transport - which is much cheaper - seemed to be particularly difficult. Hermanus was a quaint seaside town with a nice place to stay. The weather was mild since summer was pretty much over but warm when the sun was out. We spent a few days in Hermanus relaxing after Capetown and also took a cage dive with the Great White Sharks. That was a great day out - we drove out to Gansbaii and then took a boat out about an hour from land. The captain then took a huge tuna head and attached it to a rope and threw it in ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town April 12th 2003

We arrived in Capetown and got a ride to Long Street which is where most of the backpacker hostels are. We started to walk up the road to check out what was available when we met a young swedish girl who recognized our search and recommended Ashanti guesthouse and also took us there in her car. Ashanti was a little over our budget, so we walked back down to Long Street and got a room there. We stayed in Capetown for about 4 days and did a lot of touristy stuff of which neither I nor Kristen is usually that keen. It was fun though. We walked around the town, took a boat trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela and most other black political prisoners were incarcerated during Aparteid, we walked around the Victoria and ... read more

Dear Everyone! Firstly thank you very much for all the great emails you've sent us. We are sorry that we cant always reply to you all, the internet is unbelievably expensive in Ethiopia, if we could, then we would. Now on to what you are really reading this for, where are we?!?! Addis Ababa. And as for getting here....read on. We took a mix of public transport to the Sudan / Ethiopia border, including a luxury bus (video, food and drinks) and another truck, this one smaller with both of us crammed in the back with numerous people, bags, freight and donkey trailers. Crossing the border was very easy, but there were only the two of us not 25 in a big truck. Just fill in a form, another stamp in the passport and away we ... read more

When we finally got to the border after a couple of very long days driving, no one there had heard anything about fighting, and our trucks had already crossed. Argh!! We crossed into Sudan on our own, very easy, the Sudanese formalities took 4 hours, 3 1/2 of those we were waiting for people, the rest was actually doing something. As soon as we got over the border and found our truck had taken off, we went into El Geneina to find an airline office. In an effort to either fly to Khartoum or catch up with our truck, we ended up on a local truck to a place called Nyala. It took the best part of three uncomfortable days, sleeping rough in the desert for two nights. Remember we hadn't brought sleeping bags or mats ... read more

Africa » Chad February 27th 2003

Leaving Waza, we flew along decent roads till we got to Kousseri, the last town on the road to Chad. We stopped here for food, partly as Cameroon is meant to be cheaper than Chad, but also that Chad is meant to have less food available. Which I guess are tied together - less food makes what is available more expensive. Not that we used many SIFCAS rations either, just a few tins. At least, not while we were on the truck, but more on that later. Crossing the border was easy enough, actually leaving the border was harder. Lunch time prayers had started and the road was full of worshipping men. Colin and I decided when we reached N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, to get off the truck for a couple of weeks and ... read more

Beach Holiday in Egypt (Hurghada) A short breakaway during winter time to Hurghada, Egypt. We stayed 1 week in hotel Grand Resort*****, a wonderful hotel! Really 1001 nights! Due to overbooking we received an upgrade to a family suite. Top! Most of the time we did some relaxing at the pool of this great hotel. Or we went to the beach of partner hotel Siva Grand Beach****, which was also a nice hotel (outside facilities, anyway). Trip we did during this holiday: A snorkling trip to Sharm El Naga. This was nice but not that impressive as our snorkling trip to Ras Mohamed National Park last year in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. ... read more
