Any advice for a first time backpacker making her way alone through Morocco?

Hey,
So, this is my first time backpacking and I'm doing it solo through Morocco. I'm backpacking for 13 days before heading off to Kenya.

To be honest, I'm a tad nervous; how likely is it that I will get pickpocketed? Will I be able to find cheap accommodations without booking in advance? Is it safe to carry my pack with me at all times, or should I find places to leave it? Is there anything you think I should know or take into consideration? Any general tips or advice?

I'm sorry if some if these sound like obvious or stupid questions, I just really want to avoid as many problems as I can, especially with the importance of keeping all of my travel documents and information for the destinations I'm traveling to after Morocco.

Hi Anna,

We always travel as a couple so hard to say but I can definitely say that we felt really safe in Morocco. You can get pick pocketed anywhere so just use common sense of what to carry and what not to carry with you. We went for 10 days and we did not book anything in advance - everything seemed so easy to arrange over there. My only advice would be to watch for touts and don’t trust so much as there are people who claim to offer help and advice or are willing to take you around but then they expect a nice payment for this. We had that issue in Marrakech.

Enjoy - Morocco is wonderful ;-)

Hi there, If you are travelling to Morocco, I suggest you look for a reputable travel company to help you with your trip.

We just got back from a 2 week vacation that we organized through Gateway2Morocco Travel and we could not be happier, everything was taken care of and we visited some of the best places that were not easy to even find.

When we were in Marrakech also we heard about a couple of Germans that went for a hike on the Mountains of Toubkal and they did not consult with local authorities or used any local help and they been lost, the wife was eventually died and the husband was recovered by local police and transferred to the hospital.

Just have a look at Gateway2Morocco Travel and at least ask for more information before you start your journey <snip>
Hope this little info will help you in your upcoming trip.

Have you decided on which cities to visit in Morocco? You can easily find hostels or other cheap accommodation in major cities. We visited for about 10 days, starting in Copacabana, Marrakesh and then some time in the mountains. We were able to find most of the information in Marrakesh, and booked mountain trip from there. If you are staying on beaten tourist path, you can book everything once you get there.
Regarding safety - like any other place, be careful with your valuables, carry them safely especially in crowded areas. You can read about my trip here - https://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/zweiindians/Trips/26824 Reply to this
