So the other day we woke up early and went to the Hilton for breakfast. After that we went across the street to the Cairo Museum. On the way there (during the 30 second walk), it was the first time I saw the tourist police. They were carrying machine guns, so it was a little weird. The museum was pretty crowded, but that didn't bother me too much. Only when a tour group of about 30 Europeans stood around points of interest for 10 minutes at a time. It took us quite a long time to look around the first level. There was so much to see, but yet, it was so disorganised. I was impressed with everything though. We went up to the second level, and it was pretty much dedicated to King Tutankhamen's treasure's. ... read more

It was only a few hours flight from Dubai, to Egypt. The airport wasnt so great. When we were landing I saw a lot of rubbish just beside the runways, and people just all over the place. When we got to the terminal, I was kinda shocked to see an airport of this standard.... I guess it was my first taste of the good old culture shock. The airport pretty much looked like an old bathroom that had never been cleaned before. When we were going through passport control, I was a little confused. It seemed some of the richer local men found it okay to cut in front of like 30 people at a time. I was so pissed, but hey, I wasnt in Melbourne anymore. Anyways, David and I found our bags easily, but ... read more

Egypt and Israel December 27, 2000 - January 8, 2001 Wed/Thu 12/27-28/00 Egypt is a country that has created a present as fascinating as its past, so when we had an opportunity to visit friends who were living in Cairo, Brian, Bill, and I eagerly planned a trip that would also include visiting relatives who had recently moved to Israel. We flew from Houston to London Gatwick, where we had an eight-hour layover, so we took the tube into London's Piccadilly Circus. A five-hour flight brought us to Cairo around 11 p.m. Our friends had arranged for a “meet and assist,” who whisked us through all administrative red tape & visas, and soon we were out the door and met by Kasey, Bruce, and their driver Mustafa. En route to their home in Maadi, a suburb ... read more

Now that we're back in Nairobi, it doesn't seem as daunting the second time. Except that when we got off the bus, Mike almost let himself get pissed off at a relentless, harassing taxi driver. My approach now? Say nothing and just look at them. Or turn and respond with, "Blah, blah, blah!" Not worth my energy anymore to get baited into a fight. Leaving Arusha was tough but tougher still because I caught a cold which became full-blown by the time the bus ride was over. There was a memorable highlight at the border stop: I became most interesting, as my hair got the full attention of a young Maasai guy who spent a good amount of time touching it and examining how it works. I love Maasai areas. The people are so interested in ... read more

Reluctantly leaving isolation, we ferried, bussed and matatu-ed our way to Bukoba. When we arrived, Mike threw his arms in the air and announced to the waiting crowd, "Yes! Mzungus are here!!" Everybody looked so confused, I fell out laughing. It's a nice small town where the cheapest accommodation rents dorm rooms to men and women separately. They roll up the sidewalks at dusk. We bought our ferry tickets and went to a little restaurant where they kept us captive for 3 hours by lying to us and saying they had food while they slyly snuck out to the market. A few beers later, waiting in line to board the boat, I was shocked to find someone trying to charge me to use the ladies room. "I don't have it. I'll go around back where half ... read more

Subject: Blog: Once in a lifetime? Chapter 1 From: _Schwann_ Even before 9/11 I started hating air travel but my old-school friend Roy, who now lives in London, but owns hotels in Spain, has lured me North to Spain for the summer with offers of a Villa with a Mercedes convertible and a 30ft twin V-8 power boat to play with, when I'm not hanging out on the Piazza surrounded by beautiful sweating girls in white lycra. Talking Heads sing; "Same as it ever was". Can't get it out of my mind as the date for my departure by ship to Tenerife gets closer. "There is water under the ocean. Water. Let the days go by. Into the blue again. The silent water." It must have been some years back I promised myself that the next ... read more

Here in Kampala, the Red Chili Hideaway is an oasis. A big lawn outside the main building is where we pitched the tent. From Kampala we can get our Tanzanian visas but we're stuck waiting for a few days. Our schedule's getting tighter and it makes sense to me for us to skip a visit to Lamu in exchange for a few days in the Ssese Islands. Mike seems to agree, I hope it's in his heart. Note: I'm now minus one wallet, 7000 USh (about $4)and 3 credit cards (easily cancelled). Why did I let my guard down? Answer: because I'm not in Nairobi. Sometimes my boyfriend just doesn't want to think about what he wants to do and then just when we're down to the wire, he gets clarity. We won't go to Lamu, ... read more

The trip was long to Kakamega but we made it in one day and stayed in a hotel before the ride to the National Forest. It was a very solitary place, green and lush. Monkeys were everywhere! We did one night of camping before a rainforest tour with our guide, Solomon. This is one place I'd come back to, no question. It's actually the most appealing part of Kenya I've seen yet. Another full day of travel, hopping matatus and having the misfortune to encounter the most unpleasant immigration officer ever. Since I was compliant with the requirements he barked out, the only thing he had to gripe about was that I came to Uganda overland through Ethiopia. "Very unusual", he said suspiciously. As soon as the painful immigration process was over we were allowed to ... read more

We awoke at the very civilized hour of 9am and we rented two bikes. They wanted 500 KSh for mountain bikes so of course instead we rented the 1-speed pieces of shit for 250. I was begging for more speeds on that hilly road until it ended and we hit pure sand. We carefully made our way through the herds of cattle and a lot more sand to the Crater Lake Reserve. The way wasn't so clear, as we were standing in 2 feet of sand surrounded by cows, so we asked directions. The Masaai tribesman herding the beasts was the only guy around, so Mike tapped him on the shoulder. When he turned around, we were both a little startled at the size of the spear he was sporting. But he was very friendly and ... read more
