Well it took a while for me to get here and honestly the number of stories I have saved up in doing so would take a day and a half to recall and you all don't have that kind of time...so I'll give you the abbreviated version and you can ask me more later. Missed my connecting flight in Paris and spent the day in Charles de Gaul waiting for the next flight. I drank 6 dollar expressos trying to stay awake and deal with the jet lag before I got to South Africa. It worked, barely, and at 11pm that night I got on the plane to Joburg and passed out for the next 10 hours or so. I spent one night in Johannesburg and then travelled with other researchers to Blydespoort where we met ... read more

Well, after a solid day and a half of traveling, I have finally arrived in Cape Town! After settling in at the house, Katie and I ventured out into downtown Cape Town. The public transportation system here is ridiculous. Basically, there are privately owned Volkswagen vans that drive up and down the streets picking up passengers. The crazy drivers even add to the experience. Not only do they weave in and out of rush hour traffic, but sometimes they'll even use the other side of the road to get around people...even if there's oncoming traffic! It definitely makes for an exciting adventure anytime you have to go somewhere. The bus dropped us off in downtown Cape Town, where Katie and I walked around for a little bit. I was a little bit nervous walking around ... read more

Supa! (Hello in Maasai) I hope that this blog finds everyone well and getting ready to say hello to the first day of summer tomorrow. Since we are right on the equator tomorrow, June 21st summer solstice, we will have no shadow at 12 noon. I hope that I remember to pay attention. I've got some great news for everyone who donated (and for those who didn't as well). Alan and I have made our first major donation... we've helped create a much needed maternity ward for the clinic I am working in. This is the only maternity within a four hour walk and will help the communities so much. It will save the lives of mothers and their newborn babies. Because, until now, there was no place for the mothers to deliver where they could ... read more

Africa » Uganda June 20th 2007

We got up at the butt crack of dawn, boarded the van full of all sorts of stuff and about twelve people, thus beginning our long bumpy adventure to Adjumani, Uganda. We stopped many times along the way to purchase bush rat on a stick, Casavas, two live chickens whom accompanied us for the rest of the way, Bananas, Pineapples and various other goods. Most bumpy ride ever. I actually did manage to sleep though it was rough. Driving along this road I finally realized I am in Africa. This road stretched on forever and I’ve never seen so many kids. There were thousands of people chillin along the road, it was incredible. I definitely don’t think they’ve seen too many white people because everyone was staring at us like we were out of place. We ... read more

Quick update! I landed in Cairo at 3PM local time. Smooth flights from Dulles to Vienna and from Vienna to Cairo! I am very impressed with Cairo. Really cleaner than I expected and the buidlings around the city are incredible. I guess it is much more modern than I expected! Ate dinner at the hotel - interesting item on the menu Fried Lamb Brains. I passed on that one. Security at the hotel is tight. They X-ray your suitcases like at the airport before they ever enter the hotel and you have to pass through security check point and metal detector (like at the airport) before you can enter the lobby, Sleeping room is okay. After 24 + hours w/out a bed I can't be too picky!!! Tomorrow I have business meetings at 11 AM ... read more

On Sunday, a group of us went down to the weekly market at Green Point, about a mile away from where we are staying. The weather was pretty gorgeous in the morning, if a little cold, and the walk was pleasant. The market is a conglomeration of artisans and vendors who sell a lot of little african trinkets, like salad tossers (odd, I'm aware), elongated ebony figurines, radios made out of coke cans and bottle tops, and beadwork. Most of the items there are actually made in Namibia, Botswana, and the Ivory Coast, and the vendors jack up the prices to no end. I have serious dilemmas about bargaining for these items. The people selling them are living in abject poverty, and the prices they originally sell for are not actually expensive. Granted, the quality ... read more

It is a singularly unique experience to travel to a remote village with only a few friends, stay there for a few days and experience the love and energy of the people there. It is especially interesting when you are the only muzungu (whitey) in a village of milabulas (Africans). To have people treat you like you are ten years older than you are, and listen to what you say even though you are much younger than they is very fulfilling. However, my trip to Nyagisagara was not about me, it was about the people there, and experiencing their passion and spirit. It was also about financing Baha’i activities that the local Baha’is cannot usually afford. To begin I will copy a brief blurb about the Baha’i Faith from Wikipedia for those of you who don’t ... read more

So I realize that this may be a little late in the works as compared to a traditional blog but I will do my best to fill in the major issues covered over the last month as best I can. I plan to give a current description of what we are going through on the research project accompanied with a synopsis of different portions of the class that took place for the last four weeks. The group of about 22 students was on the move constantly with very little time to digest the information we were encountering. I plan to begin that digestion now by describing what we went through and reflecting on its significance. Now: To give you some perspective I am currently staying in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa just outside of Kruger ... read more
