Checked out of Ashanti this morning at 8am and went straight to Long Street Backpackers.. got the dorm room.. and woooh.. the room's on the 3rd storey.. and we have our own balcony overlooking long street! and the dorm has a private bathroom as well... 90rand/person/night.. nice place.. and Clinton (who owns the place i think) is really nice and friendly... you just got to love the atmosphere at great backpackers' hostels.. Went out for breakfast at some nice cafe.. then basically walked the town.. Ryan, who's the artistic type, brought me to this nice art gallery owned by Michael Stevenson.. he worked at a gallery in New York that mainly deals with African and Indian art.. so he has been going around the various galleries yesterday when i was up in the Table Mountains.. Well, it's my last day in Cape Town. I've had a good few days here. It's a bit of a disappointing day today, not great weather but it's the first time I've been able to see the famous mist descending over the mountain. Went to Robben Island yesterday to see where Nelson Mandela et al had been incarcerated as political prisoners, it was an interesting place to visit. I'd envisaged it as being a purely prison island like Alcatraz for example but the island is quite vast and there's a small village there. The tour involved two sections, firstly a coach tour around the island to get an overview of the whole island and then a tour around the high security prison where the political prisoners were held away from the other criminals who were detained ... read more

The Latest Pics Africa » Tanzania » Arusha By Into_East_AfricaJune 23rd 2007Joanna RaesideCamera problems still ongoing but here are some pics from my friend's camera for now.... Not too much has happened since I last wrote. I looked down to find a lizard clinging to my arm the other day though. Two seconds later the lizard found itself flying at high speed across the room after much arm waving. Apparently I should be more careful the next time I see a lizard because they help keep the mosquitos at bay..... Anyway, this posting of photos could take a while so I'd better get on with it! Hope everyone is well, joanna x... read more

Again I couldn’t sleep last night; my heart is so broken I cannot stop thinking about the children and the inability for them to get the food they need. All night I have been thinking of ideas to help raise support for the orphanages so we can get some self sustaining business going and support the children’s basic needs as well as their schooling. I know I am not individually able to do this, but with the grace of God and his almighty power, we can accomplish it. Our morning was typical and we had some extra relax time so Raveesh, Amy, Candace, Edwin and I took a tour (walk) down the road a ways. Most of our conversation was about change, concerning the best ways to prepare the children for life after the orphanage. It ... read more

Things are progressing well with the study. I've been working closely over the past three days with Mr. Shakes Mathbula, a nurse at the Health Center. I've really just been observing and trying to figure out how best to work the study protocol into the day-to-day happenings of the clinic. The clinic itself is a government run establishment that is part of the Vhembe District Health Department. Its like any other primary care setting in the states. For the kids its mostly runny noses, colds, flu, immunizations and well child exams. Most adults present with similar complaints or they are receiving monthly care for more chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, asthma etc. They do quite alot of pre-natal care and I was fortunate enough to sit in on a few exams, the two weeks of obstetrics ... read more

Last weekend was another very tough weekend (large amount of sarcasm there)! We headed off on our postponed trip to the very idyllic Lamu island. The weekend involved much relaxing, eating, swimming and other such laziness, which I shall summarise for you: On Thursday morning we jumped on a matatu heading up to Malindi airport - from which we had a 25 minute flight to Manda Island (just next to Lamu) and then quick boat ride across to Lamu. An encounter at Malindi airport deserves mentioning, however, and serves as the title for my blog this week. While we were waiting for the plane, a white man in his 60s or 70s struck up a conversation with us. He proceeded to tell us that he had been living in Africa for the last 30-odd years, ... read more

And yes! I've made it to Cape Town! Cairo to Cape.. what does 'Cape' really mean to me? Cape Town? Cape of Good Hope? or Cape Aguillas, the southernmost tip of Africa? To be truthful, I have not really thought about it.. 'Cape' was just so far away at the start of my travels.. and before I know it.. I'm here.. I'm thinking 'Cape' would be the Cape of Good Hope for me, which I will be visiting in a rented car this Sunday.. Cape Aguillas doesn't hold much allure to me other than being the southernmost point, and since I did not start at the northernmost point, visiting the southernmost point does not hold much meaning.. For now, Cape Town is 'Cape' enough for me.. It was pretty special for me as I saw the ... read more

So, besides ranting about Kampala, I completely forgot to mention the NGO that I visited yesterday. So, three of us went to HURINET which is Human Rights Network but, we mostly talked to the project director of UCICC- Uganda Coalition on the International Criminal Court. It was super interesting. We discussed his work, which is basically providing information, which is supposed to be neutral, about the ICC most speciically its role in the conflict in NUganda, which is what we have been studying for the past week and a half. The course material is so interesting, I mean devastating but extremely complex. Just a little explanation: Uganda is made up of what was a bunch of different clans/kingdoms before the British drew arbitrary lines and made all of these different cultures and people members of one ... read more

Day 8 was Gorilla day - the day we had been looking forward to and a real once in a lifetime experience, although we were both a little nervous. There are 5 gorilla groups at the Volcano's National Park that range in size from 6 up to 32. Of course everyone of the 40 people trekking that day wanted to see the big group (Susa Group), they only take a small group of people and we didn't want to split up, so we got to see the second largest group, the Amahoro, which consists of 16 Gorilla's including 2 Silver backs, females and many young gorillas ready to show off for the camera. We had 2 guides, plus 2 armed soldiers to look after us - following the murder by poachers of a group of ... read more
