Africa June 20th 2007

Hi All, We hope that all of you are well. We are trying our best to keep you up to date with everything but the internet is slow here and not very frequent. Picking up where we left off.... LIvingstone island was fantastic!! We rolled up the pick up point which is this lavish hotel where guests are driven around on golf carts, the workers dress in safari suits and to ask for a taxi is met with the reply of you need to walk out to the main road and get one there!! Check it out on the web it is called the royal Livingstone. Anyway we were taken to this island that is basically in the middle of the falls on the edge! You get taken there by boat and then toured around the ... read more

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind for the TZ2000 team. June 5-9 was the first campaign week - held in Arusha. Since we had just received our container, we did not help during this first week, but rather worked furiously at home, so that we'd be a bit more settled by the time of the campaign in Moshi. The Freed Hardeman campaigners returned to the States on June 10. June 12-16 was seminar week in Arusha. Tuesday - Friday there were classes every day. The men met at the Andrew Connally School of Preaching. The women met at the church building in Arusha. I spoke Tuesday morning, on the topic of "Letting Our Light Shine", John 13:34,35. Julia also spoke; her topic being "Light Causes Growth." I spoke again on Thursday, on ... read more

So, I have not been able to use the internet for very long periods of time so, Ihave been unable to blog in a while. But, Sunday Iwent to my homestay and I am staying with a really great young couple and their 8 month old baby and the fathers sister. They are very nice and their home is simple and clean. I have my own room which is nice and they have a semi stnad up shower (very rare). So, although they have a modest home they have some nice accomodations, which is more than I can ask for. I have been commuting from their house in the suburbs of Kampala to class every day at Makerere University. I have to take two taxi/buses and I have to leave at like 730. It was intimidating ... read more

Africa » Zimbabwe » Victoria Falls June 20th 2007

As we approached the Vic Falls area in the truck, we could see a huge misty cloud of spray rising from the falls. On our first night we stayed in a cell-like room in the Rest Camp, but it was better than freezing in the tent. We treated ourselves to a Wimpy then went to a local bar called Hunters, that we affectionately renamed Munters. It was only 25p a bottle of beer! That evening everyone else seemed to get wrecked on cheap plonk and they all ended up pushing each other into the swimming pool at Shoestrings Backpackers. So made a sharp exit as we were saving ourselves for the booze cruise the following night. Walking around the Falls The falls were totally awesome! We walked along the front of the falls, progressively becoming ... read more

As we mentioned in the last entry after leaving St Jude's we were booked onto an overland trip from Nairobi to the Gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda (depending on permit availability), travelling quite differently in an overland truck with six other people for 14 days. We left the school early on the Friday morning with Dan (my trusty Accounting buddy - who was also leaving the school on the same day as us) and we headed to Nairobi in his car. We spent the night at his friend's place and then checked into our tour departure hotel the night before heading off (early on the Sunday morning). Kristina lives in a perfect setting right on the edge of the Nairobi National Park. A pretty nice place - whilst having breakfast in the morning we saw ... read more

Africa » Lesotho June 20th 2007

Lesotho translates as the land of the people who speak Sesotho; the people of Lesotho are called Basotho. It's a small land locked country - at @30,000 sq/km it's completely surrounded by South Africa and lies entirely above 1,000m - its lowest point is 1,400m, with over 80% of the country above 1,800m. And of its 2 million population around 29% have HIV/AIDS - recent estimates for the average life expectancy are @36 years old. I had just one day in Lesotho but soon realised I could easily have stayed much longer - like many tourists I was on a day trip from South Africa. The scenery here is stunning, quite barren at the time of year I visited but stunning nevertheless. My lasting memory of the country though would have to be the people - ... read more

You know that thought that crosses your mind when you are travelling or visiting a place and while you are there you think: So and so would love it here….. these friends would enjoy it here, next time we should invite these people, etc. Well, we often had that thought while we were at Ponta Malongane on our own, so we have invited a few people over the years. But we all know the minute you invite others and carry on about how wonderful the place is, you are pre-empting disaster. In 2007 we invited some dear friends, the Morris & Birch families to join us for a week, but at the end of the trip we wondered if it was a good idea, because it rained......non stop! At least, it felt that way. It was ... read more

Africa » Zambia » South Luangwa June 20th 2007

Today I’m in Lusaka, Zambia. I seem to have traveled in a circle. Funny how stuff works out. Here in Lusaka I’m kind of taking a break from “Africa” and am spending some time in the westernized, expat area of Lusaka. Strange since I just took a vacation in Malawi. It was surreal almost for me to walk into Arcades the other day. Arcades is one of the large shopping malls in Lusaka. Last time I was there was New Years Eve and we went bowling late at night. I arrived here via a slight detour through South Luangwa National Park. This is regarded as one of the best parks in Southern Africa and one of the better parks in Africa for animals. It is also one of the few that you can do a walking ... read more

Africa » South Africa June 20th 2007

Gosh we have been back from Africa for almost 2 weeks now. It was not a smooth transition, it is exhausting to travel across the world, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I sort of dropped off the earth here with my entries. Those few blogs earlier were only 2-3-days into the trip. Since then there was so much left out, that maybe I can reminisce now. It's funny, I thought when I did shark diving it would be the last risky thing I would volunteer to do, but I came very close to the bungee jump in Zambia. I keep thinking that if we were there one more day I would have done it (the jump is between the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe over a bridge, viewing the falls, and ... read more
