On Tuesday, Lauren and I decided to take our free afternoon to see the South African Jewish museum, which is both a museum of Jewish history in South Africa and a Holocaust museum. I've seen a lot of Jewish museums in my life, and I hae to say, this is one of the top museums I've been to. Although it's much smaller, I'd say it's probably as comprehensive on scale as the American one in DC and very different than Yad Vashem. The museum starts out with a few artifcats from the Jewish Community in Cape Town. The whole synagogue is built in a very European style that seems to imitate a Church...there are spires and what looks like a steeple. The ark is very beautiful, hand carved wood that is indigenous to the area. ... read more

Hello loyal fans! THis one, it wont be serious. Or long. So yesterday (Wednesday) I killed a goat. On purpose. Yup, I have blood on my hands (or did, until I washed very thouroughly). On Monday Papa Jean bought the goat and brought it back to the property, where it was immediately deemed by all the worker's as "too small". So on Tuesday Papa Jean went to take it back and get a bigger one. Failing at that, he brought the original one back and told all complainers to suck it up. Seeing as how the goat had managed to survive our scrutinies, I decided to name it, and chose "Betty". On Wednesday morning Betty got the chop. No worries, animal lovers, it was a sharp knife. We (Gad, Eric and I) then hung Betty from ... read more

Something had changed back in Cape Town. The winter had arrived and with the winter there was a change in mentality. The hordes of German tourists had left the city and Long Street - that busy, loud waterhole for the Bazbuz crowd had calmed down to a pleasant evening stir at weekends only. The strollers (as the begging street kids call themselves) were busy storing glue underneath the man-hole covers, and the homeless added extra sheets of cardboard paper to their beds. Truly there was winter in the Mother City and it affected all its inhabitants, but the chilly nights hit the weak and marginalized, the hardest. Thick fog would cover the Cape Flats in the mornings and foghorns from the harbour would add a pleasant base to the sound of police sirens and the calls ... read more

After the National Park we spent a few days travelling through Kenya to the Uganda border. I'm happy to report that crossing the border was fairly uneventful and it did not take long before we were emerced into the green countryside of Uganda. Here we took a ferry ride on Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island, which is home of to a Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Many Chimps over here are killed for their meat and the babies are often exported as pets, so it was great to see that a safe place had been created to help with there survival. We watched the Chimps having lunch which was highly amusing and then Andreas from our tour accidentally dropped his camera batteries and one of the Chimps made off with an AA battery, trying his hardest to bite it ... read more

Today was the half-way point of the road trip of the year... Mega Bike Week 3.0. About 8 of my closest friends, and some random tag-alongs from Victoria are in the middle of tearing up the trails along the West Coast. I was supposed to be there too.... sometimes things don't work out like you think they will. I never thought I'd be in Sudan instead. Missing the annual trip is like missing Christmas... it just isn't done. So to Yoda, Kamikaze, AGirl, Mountain Man, Triple B, Pic, and the whole gang.... kill it one time for me. I'm thinking of you all. The trip started in based out of Squamish, with stops in Whistler, heli-biking in Pemberton/Whistler, Squamish, the North Shore, and Mt Vedder... have fun! Ride safe... okay who am I kidding? Mountain ... read more

Sorry about my lack of entries, I've not been getting as much access to the net as I'd have liked to. Anyways, as you can see by the title, I've had a change of location. I've come down to Cape Town for the week as I wanted to see some more of South Africa and this week was best as it would have been one of the quieter weeks at Refilwe before Calday people and a group from the US arrive. Before I came here we were doing some construction work, as ever things are disorganised so on an average day we do three jobs and don't finish any of them rather than doing one job and finishing it. The second visitor cottage needs to be finished but it's nowhere near it as far as I ... read more

We arrived at Lake Bunyoni (near Kabale) on tuesday afternoon and set up our tents. We then proceeded to have a big party, as often seems to happen when we arrive at a new campsite - I guess we always need to test the bar out! Most of the group had to get up the next day to move on to Rwanda to trek the gorillas, but as I (and one other from my truck) had decided not to, we spent the day relaxing at the campsite, and getting to know the other people there. The restuarant/bar here is quite amazingly slow! We ordered our food last night and it took 2 hours to arrive! And I even had to wait an hour for toast this morning! But, as everyone seems to say - TIA (this ... read more

I awoke so early it was still dark out. As I sat and prayed the orphanage slowly came alive with the young girls sweeping the entire area. Even though I has already heard, I am still amazed at how dedicated and hard working the ladies are. As time moves on the rest of the children trickle out of their tukuls (small huts) and begin by brushing their teeth with small sticks from the trees then getting to their chores. Not a single one complains or even thinks of making an excuse. As I am sitting here and have been continuing to read through Ephesians and Philippians; the Lord has really placed on my heart the desire to live fully in Christ and be above reproach. This is a big challenge for someone who struggles with purity ... read more

Enda Supa! (Hello to everyone!) YEAH! I have figured out how to get the photos on the web. In this blog I've only downloaded a few, though. It seems to take quite a while... So, what I've done is put them on my photo website at www.lifeofbrooke.shutterfly.com and will put them on here when I get a little more time. I hope that you get a chance to check them out. The people here are so beautiful and there are some really cool photos of the kids we get to hang out with... they are so funny. The bed got dropped off yesterday after a long, bumpy and dusty ride back into Saikeri. When I got out of the truck Al walked up and began laughing at how dirty I was. I couldn't see my ... read more
