So my day started out a little hectic... well, I shouldn't say hectic, but let's just say adventurous ;). I awoke in the oh so suave city of Como, Italy, and had a lovely breakfast in the outdoor cafe of the hotel I stayed at (complete with a bell tower right outside my window - which of course rang quite early, hehe) ;). I also found out from some German travelers sitting with me that the swing dancing competition I witnessed last night was actually quite a big ordeal - their friends and such had come all the way to participate. They were quite interesting to talk to. But, anyway, so after that, I left for the main train station... I get there, and discover that the ticket machine won't issue me a ticket back to ... read more

Last week we attened our first session of the ICTR. Simply entering the building was a remarkable experience. Even for someone who has read a great deal about the genocide in Rwanda, it was yet another indicator of how much more there is to learn. Sitting in the courtroom that afternoon, I was reminded once again how quickly people forget. And to think that while the UN has convened this Tribunal in Arusha, another genocide is happening not all that far away. Sooner or later a similar tribunal will occur with Sudan as the focus and Rwanda will simply be used for comparisons sake. We entered the courtroom mid-witness so it took some time to get a reference point. As one of my friends said it was a little like picking up War and Peace and ... read more

Hello Everyone, Before I begin, I should remind everyone that you can subscribe to our blog and receive an email reminder every time we post a message to this site. I highly recommend you do this to ensure you don't miss out on any of the news. Okay.....wow.....big day! Cristelle and I both slept for about 12 hours or so, to offset the 48 hours of non-sleep that we had experienced previous to that. Surprisingly, we both felt completely rested and survived a very long day today to prove it. It is 1:00 AM in the morning on the 23rd of June, so I may not write too much. I spent some time on Lili and Lew's computer this evening trying to download some images but their computer would not recognize my camera, so I ... read more

After a day of business meetings on Thursday, Friday was spent visiting The pyramids of Giza and the city of Memphis. All I can say is it is incredible to think I was looking at something that was built over 5,000 years ago! Made me realize what a small amount of time we each spend on Earth! Check back soon as I will post a video of my ride on a Camel!!!! FYI -The photos are at the bottom of this page. Cheers!!! ... read more

I couldn’t sleep all night. I cried most of the night through because my heart is bursting with sorrow and joy. I feel responsible for the situation that the people are in. Most people will say, “you can’t feel responsible for them it’s not your burden to carry”. To those people I would say you’re wrong, Christ calls us to carry one another’s burdens and I am called, more than most, to do just that. I finally got out of bed as the sun was slowly creeping over the horizon; I needed to listen to something so I began listening to Savior King by Hillsong United. My heart was filled with emotion and I collapsed on my knees in the dirt crying my heart to the Lord. I don’t know how long I was there but ... read more

Hi Everyone, Thanks for tuning into out BLOG! We have arrived in Kenya after an arduous journey - 8 hours flihgt from Edmonton to London, another 9 hours wait at Heathrow, then 8.5 hours to Nairobi. Cristelle had a shorter flight from Ottawa, but then had to wait about 12+ hours at Heathrow. We hadn't really arranged how to meet at Heathrow (why make a plan and spoil the adventure) so it took us about 5 hour s to find one another. But we did and then went for a nice little meal. The first nig event for us came at the airport when Cristelle wnet to into the line up to get her boarding pass from Virgin Airlines. A group of Armenians returning to Los Angeles got bumped due to lousy service from security, British ... read more

23.06.07 we are back in Dar Es Alaam after a few days "holiday" from holiday. We spend three days at a beach camp called sunrise Beach resort ( www.sunrisebeachresort.co.tz ) wallowing in the warm ocean and having "room service" at the campsite. We got stuck in the beachsand while trying to reach the campsite. Right next to the waterline it was no more go. First low gear and all ... no way... we had to dig the landi out. You won't beleive how fast you can dig when the water is closding in. As soonm as the water reaches the car it undermines the tyres and the car could tip over the side. So we digged faster.. and what can I say, we managed with the help of a few fishermen and fast digging. (I dramatized ... read more

Saturday 16th 6am up for a 7am departure - we crossed over the Kenyan border and a long journey to Nairobi. I used Andrea’s room to shower & repack my bag before getting the overnight bus to Mombassa. On the nightbus I had all the back seats to myself, and lay out to sleep, although the bumpy roads meant that I flew into the air on several occasions. At midnight we stopped, and unfortunately more people got on so I lost my bed. Sunday 17th We arrived at Mombassa at 3.30am. I thought we were arriving at 6am, so I got in a taxi for an hour drive to Diani Beach. Since only the night porter was there when I arrived, I slept on the sofa until 8am, when I had ... read more

Hi again All is well here, thankfully, after almost dying on the rim of Ngorongoro crater. Ok, so I exagerate a little, but had a bit of a scary experience! Last weekend I went on a camping trip to Lake Manyara, the Serengeti & Ngorongoro crater. All the aforementioned places were stunning and we were really lucky with the different animals that we saw, without looking very hard. We saw quite a few lions....we sat for about 2 hours watching one hunt wildebeest, watched one run from a Maasai, and saw one extremely close up sleeping by the roadside. The sheer number of animals was amazing. The annual migration has just started also so we got to see lines and lines of wildebeest. The almost dying experience....all of the camping we did was very basic ... read more
