Yes, my baby is four! I can't even believe it! We celebrated with fine dining at Pizza Passy and steak hachee sandwiches up the road from our house followed by a day at Magic Land, an amusement park here in Dakar. It was a nice time. Keagan had fun riding the bull, which Kaijah had to try and of course, got hurt. Leila wanted to as well, and when we refused because we didn’t want her to get hurt, she pitched a fit and stormed off pouting. We finally got the guy to let her pose on the one-horned bull for a photo. Similarly, you can see how her attitude goes from ‘glad to mad’ while riding in the bumper cars. Man, that girl can throw a fit; daddy’s girl! Ammar was here from Atlanta ... read more

When even the locals have come to affectionately call their home “Nairobbery,” you can’t help but arrive in town with your guard up. For weeks I’ve been girding myself against what my guidebook cheerily describes as “the most dangerous city in Africa, beating stiff competition from Johannesburg and Lagos” - a statement that’s probably ruffled a few feathers in Mogadishu, and has certainly done little to calm my nerves. In recent weeks there’s been a thwarted suicide bombing downtown, while a rash of brutal murders have been traced to the mysterious Mungiki sect - a clan whose members are rumored to drink the blood of their victims. Arriving in the cool blue pre-dawn hours, with ominous packs of men shuffling along the airport road and dozens of matatus - Kenya’s famous minibuses - careening left and ... read more

You know when you are at the edge of the Saraha desert. The sand dunes seems to rise up out of nowhere, and there are camels waiting all lined up waiting for you! Getting on a camel is a bıt of a balancing act, but once you are up there, it is a very cool experience. We headed out about an hour before sunset, and as we headed out to the camp, the colors of the sand change from yellow to orange to terracotta and red. Arriving at the camp some of us ran up and down the dunes, some chilling out, recovering from the camel ride. As dinner was being prepared the stars began to come out and I don't ever recall being able to see that many stars ever in my lifetime. After dinner, ... read more

Here at the end of my egyptian adventure and headed to Greece The week I spent in Egypt was far too short of a time to visit such a culturally rich and historical place. What I can definitely say is that this visit has whetted my appetite to learn more about the Ancient Egyptian gods and history of the people. Not to mention the willingness to learn hieroglyphics and read all the information inscribed into all of the statues and temples. But we learned many things. So to recap my Egyptian adventure. After arriving in Cairo after a long bus ride from the Taba border, we headed straight to our hotel where it became clear to us that we signed up for a luxury tour somehow. It was a 5 star hotel called the Sonesta and ... read more

After working for a year, I was normally used to travel the next.....but life changes!! After making twice a big trip for about 9 months., I was wondering how it would be to travel just for 5 weeks! Together with my girfriend we decided to take a trip to southern Africa, and our starting point was Cape Town. Cape Town, lovely place, but we didn't get the feeling of Africa there yet. Just three days, but 3 great days there! On our first day we walked around the seaside and town...and when the time got by the weather improved so we decided to climb the Table Mountain in the Afternoon!! Nice hike, but we started a bit late....in the end we had to run to the Cable car to catch te last lift down because it ... read more

St Lucia We left Swaziland for St. Lucia and made sure we stuck to the main roads, although we had a much busier border crossing with big queues. St. Lucia town is a little strip of restaurants, shops and hotels. We checked into our flat and met Debbie the crazy dog lover who works in the Stokkiesdraai office. We opened our apartment to find it could sleep 6 and had a lovely view of the wetlands. Debbie warned us not to venture too far down our garden in the evening, just in case we bumped into any crocs or hippos lurking at the waters edge. Apparently a hippo had been seen wandering around the gardens recently - and these creatures are real killers in Africa. We walked down to the beach, which turned out to be ... read more

We got up, paid up, and scooted over to the shopping center near where we had supper with Viv (17th Ave and Main Road, Walmer) so we could try to complete Mom's errand. We were successful at Woolworths, and then took a quick look around the mall. Got some VERY expensive paperbacks at Exclusive Books, and checked email. Our sessions at Internet cafes are running about R30 for an hour (about $4.50) After getting gas, we headed down the road to Addo, and Lupus Den Country House. We arrived a little early, so Priscilla brought us tea and bars to nibble on. Once our room was ready, we got settled, and then took a leisurely stroll around the working citrus farm. It was so cool to walk through rows of orange and lemon trees! We saw ... read more

Every have a 200+lb animal reach and want to touch your leg? Ever share a tent with a man with an AK47 at his feet (Funk, I said AK47 not M16)? Ever walk on the moon? Well, these are just some of my experiences in DRC - Democratic Republic of Congo, and they were all good experiences. On the Moon My first introduction to Congo was the town of Goma. When I first got here I hated it. I think I was scared. Everyone warns you about going to Congo, and yet everyone also says it is safe. My experience was that it is safe in areas and the concern is just that the Guerrillas aren’t completely done fighting. But in and around Goma it seems calm. In the town there are lots of signs of ... read more

Im back! From washington dc to new york to amsterdam to nairobi, nairobi to samburu national park in middle kenya to lewa downs rhino sanctuary next to isiolo town from where you can see mt. kenya to massai mara. this was the luxery part of the journey so far. ive seen all of the animals. (kweli kabisa) I could describe all of these experiences, but already they seem far away and my head is clogged with new things. At Lewa Downs the whole birthday court of Nancy (turning 80--the point of the trip in the first place) attended the meat eating ceremony of Karamishu, a Massai friend of Nancy. We slaughtered two sheep and a cow. the massai drank the blood from the cows neck--literally. two men held down the cow and pushed on it so ... read more
