Sunday 4 February - Day 7: Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m) After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb took us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It was a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. Adam was feeling better, with the extra Diamox helping. Altitude sickness is so unpredictable. I noticed Kerry had a very moist cough – damn! I was so disappointed for he but knew she was on a mission and she was one, very determined lady. Love that!! On arriving at camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It was always important to keep hydrated and ... read more

Friday 2 February - Day 5: Shira 2 Camp (3900m) to Barranco Camp (3960m) Our trek today started with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking into the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. There were ample boulders we had to scramble over, rocks and some level surface (the latter being very rare!). The views were amazing. How can I possibly describe the views to you. You will just have to go – or find a film taken by a drone!!! I’m sure my photos won’t do it justice. I was still feeling good but Jane from Denmark was battling a headache and that damn cold of Kerry’s – such a nuisance for her, but she quietly put one foot in front of the ... read more

It’s always hard to say ‘good-bye’ when you genuinely love a place and her people. Karagwe is such a place. Bruce Engel and I debriefed a tad en route to Entebbe to catch our flights. Bruce’s highlight? When the General Secretary of The Karagwe Diocese, Anicet said (I paraphrase): “Bruce! We just met this week but I feel we have known you forever!” Jan’s highlight? When Bruce Engel, award winning architect said: “I see why you love these people so much and are passionate about this Vision. I’m in.” ... read more

DAY 4 - Tuesday Well this is delicious! If you want some of the best dried jackfruit, papaya, pineapple or banana on the planet, you will have to get it from it’s only buyer who is based in Germany. That is what we learned at Karagwe ‘s food processing factory just a short distance from KARUCO. About 300 farm families supply fruit to the plant and another 30 work in food processing. One third of those are women. Our tour brought us through the steps of taking harvested fruit, scrubbing, coring and slicing, drying (18 hours) and packaging. The plant is OSHA certified and everything is organic. Like most tours, the end included a plate of product: In our Case, dried pineapple. Hands down the best I’ve ever eaten. Rural Opportunity Centers (ROCs) could connect to ... read more

Greetings from sunny Karagwe, Tanzania. Thank you for following along. Today is Sunday and the day began with melodies from the church choirs filling the air. After church Brighton Katabaro took Bruce Engel and me to the KARUCO Campus. We toured the buildings and Brighton shared the story of KARUCO's construction. The book is continuing to be written and the chapters continue to unfold. Bruce was duly impressed with many aspects of the campus and congratulated both Brighton and me. Because my time is limited at the Kayanga Internet Cafe I will keep the rest of this entry to expressing our day in photos. Tomorrow is a packed day with meetings of the Rural Opportunity Center team. I am unsure if I will have space in the day to upload an entry. Stay tuned and enjoy ... read more

Our journey to Africa departing 22.30 on Saturday 27 January 2018 Tom dropped 2 excited people off at the Brisbane International Airport and came into the terminal to wave us goodbye. I wished he was coming with us, but it was great to have Adam with me. We found a bar to have a ‘departure drink’. The plane was on time and we were on our way. I was a little excited and we were both hoping we had done enough training and preparation for the Kilimanjaro climb. Adam was certainly fit but as I was not running any more I was unsure of the amount of training I had done. We had both had 6 sessions over 2 weeks in the altitude training chamber in Milton, Brisbane. We were taken to a maximum of 5400m ... read more

Muheza A heavy storm woke me and 5 minutes later my alarm went. I’d intended to get a bus leaving Dodoma at 6, not fancying going anywhere in this weather I re-set my alarm and when it went again at 6:55 I got my shit together. I was on a boda to the bus stand at 7:40. Asking for Morogoro I was surprised to be shown to a big old ‘Raha Leo’ bus, yesterday I was told only smaller buses plied this route but like yesterday the fare was 12,000Tsh as quoted. At bang on 8am the less than half full bus hit the road as the heavens opened once more. The rain was really bad; 2 hours out of Dodoma along the Morogoro road the tarmac disappeared below the water for 50 metres ... read more
