I open my eyes and realize it isn’t the world that’s in chaos; it’s in my mind that the view becomes distorted and the beauty flees the scene. There was a profound moment today when I was meditating when I tuned into the sounds around me. No, not to the rooster who galavants around my yard like a 1920’s mobster, and not to the crows who land like elephants on my iron roof, but to the undertones. To earth’s tiny messages that become lost in the haze of our dizzy minds. To the rustling, airy pendulum of time passing without schedules, without measurement, without adherence to any particular will but its own peaceful contentment in keeping on. “I’ve been here,” the gracious earth spoke to me. “Haven’t you been listening?” Where in the fragile web of ... read more

There's a theory that if we were all made to share dinner with a person from each other country, there would be no wars. The more I travel, the more I think it's true. A few days ago, exasperated and sweating from rushing to catch the daladala, I took a seat next to a daughter transporting her mother from the hospital in town. As we rode through the rickety trails, over bumps, and through lake-like puddles, the young woman adjusted and readjusted her mother's head in her lap, creating various versions of pillows and adjusting the windows according to her mother's pained facial expressions. Sandwiched between furniture and other items that villagers were transporting from town, the women endured the voyage together, daughter returning the love her mother had taught her. There are a number of ... read more

Driving through the Tanzanian countryside we frequently saw the Maasai people walking the roads and fields. Colourfully dressed in red and blue, they could mostly be seen herding their goats and cattle. With their culture permitting men to have multiple wives, we passed a village where one man has an entire school devoted to the children and grandchildren he has with his 32 wives!! We entered the Serengeti National Park in a 4x4 open top safari vehicle; eyes peeled and cameras at the ready, excited and elated for our last game drives in Africa. Our goal? The illusive leopard who had managed to escape us thus far. The result? Better than we had dared to hope. The Maasai people called the Serengeti National Park "the place where the lands move on forever". Neither of us were ... read more

Grandparent alert: this post contains some foul, but necessary language. It’s 8:30am. I’ve hiked the mile to the road and back, cleaned the entire house, remade the beds, boiled drinking water, refilled the filter, greeted all the neighbors, checked on the strawberry plants, redistributed the compost, and have begun planning my week. My right eyelid has been twitching for 36 hours; an physical manifestation of the emotion stress my body is learning to manage. My hands are just a little bit shaky (probably too much coffee), and my back and neck are reminding me that water is heavy. In comparison to my neighbors, I’ve done nothing productive. This week, I broke. Not all the way… nah, I’m doin alright. But I wouldn’t be giving you the truth if I didn’t tell you that there are some ... read more

A new week and time to tackle more of East Africa. Our exit from Zambia took us to Malawi where we made our way to Lake Malawi, the 3rd largest lake in Africa. At the border crossing we saw three abandoned Irish Registered cars which we are sure arrived there legitimately! Our first stop by the lake was at Kande Beach and it didn't take long before we were tempted into its warm clear waters. It was our first taste of chilling out by the water and after some long distances we enjoyed the downtime. In case we had forgotten where we were, we ensured to get some local interaction. Our group were invited to the local village for dinner and entertainment. We were encouraged to sing for the locals also and despite the embarrassment and ... read more

Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. There are so many different trails that you can take to see this famous mountain or you can try for a long excursion that allows you to take in this entire location in about 10 days. For the most part, these trails may take anywhere between 4 and 5 days to travel through but it is very much worth the journey. If you do not have that much time, you can take mini-treks that may only take a day to get through. Lemosho Route The Lemosho route is one of the newest trails on this mountain and is an easier option that some of the other trails here. There is a lot of wildlife that you can see in this area of the trail, which ... read more

After a relatively short trip sunning ourselves on the deck, our boat docked into the harbour in Stone Town at about mid morning, and in a blaze of sunshine we disembarked and went through customs. In spite of Zanzibar being part of Tanzania, immigration and customs are mandatory for any visitors. The group from our safari trip were staying for a few nights in Zanzibar and were staying in another hotel in town- we were staying for 6 nights and had a hotel booked on the other side of the island, so we left our luggage in their place and took off to explore this ancient and fascinating town. Like a lot of African towns, Stone town juxtaposes wealth and poverty perfectly, with large, ornate, opulent buildings emerging from crumbling ruins which quite often is someone ... read more

So, I finished off my previous post about our Kenyan overland safari with saying we crossed the border into Tanzania and set up camp in a snake park- Meserani snake park to be precise. It actually wasn't half as dramatic and scary as it sounded- the owners of this campsite rescue injured snakes and nurse them back to health, or save snakes, crocodiles and other amphibians from being killed, from zoos/hotels etc, and give them a home. Visions of trying to pitch a tent in among a load of snakes melted away, so all was good. The plan was to spend a night here, then go on to spend a couple of nights in the Serengeti, taking in the Ngorongoro crater and great rift valley along the way. We spent the evening visiting a local Masai ... read more

My trip to the south coast and to Masasi, Tunduru and Songea. Arrival There was standing room only on the daladala the battered mini and not so mini buses that criss-cross Dar es Salaam ferrying commuters all over town. The tout cum conductor had shuffled me to a place behind the driver on the choka-blok minibus and helpfully positioned my cabin-sized wheeled case out of the way of the crush of people, and then charged me 400 TZS (around 14p) for the journey. I was hot and sticky even though it was only just gone 6am I dreaded every traffic light and traffic jam, because when the bus stopped so did the cooling draft from the open window. I’d arrived at Dar es Salaam airport with Turkish airlines after 3 in the morning but really I ... read more
