It is an understatement to say that Tanzania is a beautiful place. True, it has been quite some time since our trip, but the place has quite a firm hold on our hearts. It continues to puzzle us why some people refuse to travel to Sub-Saharan Africa when there are places like this to be found there. We would love to share some of the highlights from our trip with all of you. Keep reading to see the moments that made our trip so special! 1. Exploring Dar es Salaam From a sleepy fishing village, the city is now an impressive metropolis! We know—we had a hard time believing that fact as well. We enjoyed the laidback atmosphere of the place. The handful of days we spent here involved checking out the booming art scene, going ... read more

The little boys sprint over from the soccer field when they see me carrying empty buckets. They fight for their chance to carry my water, knowing there'll be a treat involved. Fifteen minutes later, seven children in tattered sweaters with huge smiles come into my courtyard carrying buckets full of precious water. Dry season is sneaking in and my gutters are dry. These little boys get lucky; I have a plethora of avocados and hand each of them half of one in addition to the normal allotment of 3 jelly beans. Their huge smiles bring me joy knowing there will be something in their tummies. I close the courtyard door and go inside to cook lunch. Half an hour later I open my back door. The courtyard is open, solar panel turned upside down, and ... read more

African Adventures!! Intro I only booked this trip a few weeks before actually flying out. I had always planned to go travelling for a few months during my 'F3' (year out of training) year, but didn't get around to actually organising it until early March! My main reason for wanting to come to Africa was to see the Victoria Falls. I had learnt about them in Geography GCSE and had wanted to visit them ever since. Also, from previous travelling experiences, I had heard good things about Mozambique (great diving and beaches) and Malawi (gorgeous people and beautiful lake!) so I thought, feck it, I'll go to all of them. Originally, I was going to fly to Lusaka, Zambia and head down to the falls on my own from there. But I got cold feet about ... read more

A long time ago, I was on a date with a guy teaching me to drive his Jeep on the beach. He asked me if I wanted to do donuts. The sand and water we were flinging off the tires felt wild and adventurous, but I hesitated. “I feel like I’m going to flip it!” I sang, in awe of the general experience. “Nah,” he said, “You’d feel gravity shift.” I’d feel gravity shift. The memory came rushing back as the minibus swerved across the highway with a nauseating lean to one side. It wasn’t like that feeling of dropping, or even of inertia. The feeling was a sickening sideways tummy-tumble that let you know you’d be going home in a flag-draped coffin had you not strapped in. This time, the driver, who may ... read more

I lean my forehead against the concrete wall, close my eyes and whisper “Thank you..” to God, the Universe, or whoever sent magical rays of light from my single shade-less bulb after too long with no electricity. It’s not bad, really, living without electricity, if there’s sunshine. On sunny days, I can place my inflatable solar lights outside and charge up my phone on the hand-me-down solar panel that replaced my stolen one. If I preserve my charge, I know I can at least make a call in an emergency (assuming I have a moment of cellular service at site). During the rainy season, when a week passes with no electricity, I watch each of my lanterns dim until I’m down to just a candle. My phone stays dead, and I just pray I don’t run ... read more

One could foresee that our journey was coming to its conclusion. On our last day in Nungwi, at Makofi's, I actually shaved. I had not shaved since mid November, a week or so before we embarked. Oh I had trimmed my beard once every couple of weeks, but standing outside the shower area, ankle deep in white sand with the temperature hovering in the mid to high thirties, I pulled out my trusty Mac 3 and proceeded to prepare myself for a return to... what? I do not want to call it 'civilization' as Africa has its own form of civilization that, in just as many ways that we perceive it as behind us, it has also leapt far ahead of us as well. It was simply a sign that change was in the offing.... we ... read more

We travelled by taxi to the north tip of Zanzibar - an area known as Nungwi. This is a section of Zanzibar known for its fantastic beaches and expensive hotels. Places such as the Coco Cabana and the 'Z' charge anywhere from $400 to $550 a night. We are coming to the end of the tourist season in February - the rains arrive in March - so weekend rates run from $1500 to $1700 for three nights!! Monica and I had booked eight nights in a guest house resort called Makofi's. We were paying $216 for eight nights - or $27 a night. Obviously, we were not expecting much for the price, however we were pleasantly surprised. Makofi's is located only minutes from the beach, about a hundred yards down an alley. It has a large ... read more

On the first of February, we packed up and left Diani beach, taking a short cab ride down the coast. Thirteen km. south and the topography had changed dramatically. The modern paved road had degenerated into a pot holed trail of dirt and dust. Every few minutes we would pass a gated entry to some large resort, but the hustle and bustle of Diani beach had disappeared into a quiet remoteness. We pulled into our resort, the Kinondo Poa, and were greeted by a manager in pressed black pants and a formal, buttoned white shirt. The resort consisted of seven structures - a bar/restaurant sitting beside the pool, a cookhouse, a large mansion like building where the owner lived and the manager had his office, and four guest houses. Each guest house was split - like ... read more

THE DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TREKKER UP MT KILIMANJARO I thought some might be interested in what our day looked like whilst climbing Kili. We were woken by Fadhili, our waiter at around 6.30am. He popped his head in with a tray full of tea, coffee, milo, sugar and powdered milk in one hand and hot water in the other. We then sat in our sleeping bag which was on 2 mattresses, and slowly woke up with every sip of coffee. Next was starting to pack up our sleeping bag, pack our day pack and pack our back pack which was carried by porters. I was so please that my back pack was under 8kgs, however the porter’s loads were all weighed so they had to share the weight. Before breakfast we had to ... read more

Monday 5 February - Day 8: Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m) Several of us had a couple of hours sleep (me) and some had no sleep (Adam). We were woken by the waiter and so dressed very quickly. Most of us had the majority of our clothes on as we slept in them. All I had to do was to put my snow pants on. We were given hot water to wash our faces. Fortunately, we didn’t have to pack our tent up which was one less thing to do. We knew we would be back for brunch. We all met in the tent to have our hearty breakfast – porridge, coffee or milo, egg pancakes and fruit. There was certainly a buzz amongst us. We got ourselves ... read more
