Twee balies, 3 vluchten per dag, naar Johannesburg ... read more

The Cape Town region first came to the attention of the European world when the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed there in 1486 but it was not until 1652 that any attempt was made to build a permanent settlement when the Dutch East India Company established a way-station for ships travelling to what is now Indonesia. Apparently the settlement grew only slowly as it was difficult to find adequate labour. This was overcome by importing slaves from Indonesia and Madagascar. These became the ancestors of the current “Cape Coloured” communities. During the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars the Netherlands was regularly occupied by France and Britain started to take control of the Dutch colonies. Cape Town was captured in 1795, returned to the Dutch in 1803, was reoccupied in 1806 and finally ceded permanently to ... read more

Cape Town, South Africa --- November 23,24, 2015 We didn't have much opportunity to tour much of Cape Town this time since we docked around 1 pm and departed the ship at 7 am the next morning for our flight to Victoria Falls. One interesting phenomenon was that as we arrived the clouds were beginning to assemble upon the top of Table Mountain.... read more

Geo: -33.979, 18.5102We spent three days at sea after leaving the Seychelles. We sailed south, passing between Madagascar and the African coast. On the first day we had to take part in a Piracy drill as we were skirting the area where there had been boardings of ships. The drill required us to stay in our cabins while the crew did a series of manoeuvres designed to outrun any attack. All went well and I'm sure will remain just a precaution. The weather continued warm and clear with slight seas though we were travelling against the prevailing current. Life on board continued with quizzes, the Pop choir rehearsals and food, food and more food. I started walking laps around the deck to try and counter the effects of all this good living. We were able to ... read more

Geo: -33.979, 18.5102We arrived in Cape Town early in the morning of Feb 4th. By 7am we were docked at our berth at the Cruise Terminal. We had arranged to meet Barbara and Roger Smith, members of La Chaines whom we had met at the Young Sommeliers'' Competition in Adelaide last September. We rang them about 8-30 and confirmed our meeting spot. This was to be at the main entrance of the Table Bay Hotel at the V&A Waterfront which was in walking distance from the dock. It was a beautiful day, sunny skies and temperatures in the high 20s. We left the ship about 9am after breakfast and took our time walking through the waterfront area. We had been here in 1998 but much had changed. We did recognise the Clock Tower and the Swing ... read more

Sleep!!!! Yes we had a lie in - thank heavens for Shabbat. We went down for a leisurely breakfast and decided that together with Avi and Angela we would go to the synagogue in Arthurs Road for the morning service. The service at Athurs Road shul was much more to our liking - no choir, friendly people in a very nice synagogue. After the service we went to the kiddush or the “bracha” as it is known in South Africa. From what we understand the “bracha” at the Marais Road synagogue was really spectacular and many of the congregation used it as their lunch. Arthurs Road provided a nice kiddush bracha as well. Before leaving the shul we prayed in the mincha gedola service. Interestingly they ended with psalm 104 but not the series of shir ... read more

Friday Morning 6am, May 30th And so my South African sojourn begins with a break-of-dawn flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles – at least I was in a first class seat and able to gulp down 3 cups of coffee heavily laced with Bailey’s – hair of the dog so to speak! Weather was sunny, hot and already 80f by the time my car service arrived to take me to the airport. Going to be significantly cooler when I’m headed. Delta is located in terminal 5 at LAX and unfortunately there is no easy way to transfer to the international terminal #3. You have to leave the security area, go outside via baggage claim and hoof it over on foot via the busy sidewalks of that airport. Check in with KLM was a breeze (thank ... read more

‘Make love not War’.
