Our daughter Amy married Karl last Saturday - we had a really wonderful day. Karl comes from South Africa and his family were unable to join us so all our family are hi-jacking the Honeymoon and going to visit them! We all fly out separately and meet up on November 10th in Bloemfontein where we will spend 5 nights together. We then all go off in different directions! Gary and I have 3 weeks there and the planning has taken a while! We are staying in a variety of places varying from wooden chalets to Country Estates and are hoping to see some great sights. We fly into Cape Town where we pick up a car and enjoy a couple of nights in the centre. Then off to The Karoo National Park for 2 nights before ... read more

This is a long one. Get a cup of coffee and settle in for a read! We arrived in Cape Town exhausted but it was 11:30am… ugh. We grabbed an Uber (yes, there is Uber in Cape Town) and headed to our Airbnb. Check in was easy and Jan our host was great. The apartment was in the city center near the Parliament. Jan gave us some tips on where to go for provisions and reminded us that tomorrow is a holiday and most places will be closed…. Great. Well, everything was closed that day as well. It was Sunday. We will have to go out tomorrow morning to find breakfast. Before long we landed at Beer House. We sampled some local beers and had a bite. By about 3pm we got a second wind that ... read more

Well we have finally arrived in Cape Town...a mega 26hr journey...Melb to Perth...Perth to JoBurg...JoBurg to Cape Town....the Temaze really did help, we have never taken sleeping tablets...a wonderful thing to get 5hrs straight sleep! Cape Town is not really what we were expecting, its seems very clean, pretty and has a nearly nice vibe to it. Couple of issues with our hotel to start with but now sorted and in a great spot right on the water close to the V&A Waterfront...walking distance to attractions, restaurants etc. Have never stayed at a Radisson Blu Hotel, very comfortable but nothing to rave about. Day one out on the walking trail down to the waterfront which is such a great area to browse around and soak up the atmosphere, then for a 2klm walk to Hussar Grill...fantastic ... read more

God is moving in the NationsFor South Africa, apartheid ended about 20 years ago. For America, almost 60. Through the preaching of MLK Jr. and others, the seeds of civil liberty were planted in churches. Although unspoken in history books, God was moving through our nation, using black and white folks alike to bring about a more just society. Now, I believe the same is happening in South Africa. Our trip to Cape Town revealed a nation of great disparity, the depths of which few here in America will ever experience. At the same time, missionaries are pouring in to build infrastructure, capacity, and to minister healing. Although it will take time, South Africa is moving toward a more just society. My friends, the Spirit of ... read more

Arriving at Windhoek was easily one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. It wasn't the bugs the size of small aircrafts flying around, nor the impending terror that was African animals, but the bitch at the customs desk. Apparently I had been asleep when they gave us the required forms for entering the country. This woman showed me no mercy. She made me go to the back of the line, after two plane loads had already landed and lined up, to fill out the form. After lining up again and going to a different lady, I was told my passport had already been entered into the system. They made me go back to the original woman who sassed me again to the point of tears. She stared at me blankly, before nudging her colleague ... read more

JP, back in the saddle, picks us up at 7:30. Today's itinerary calls for us to drive to Hermanus, a beautiful area about 2 hours out of Cape Town famous for its rugged coasts and for its whales—at certain times of the year, but not now. However, when JP hears that we did not manage to get up Table Mountain yesterday, he proposes a complete change of plans, feeling that today's good weather and tomorrow's forecast of cloud argue in favour of doing Table Mountain today. It is, after all, perhaps the number one must-see attraction in Cape Town. It is so agreed. We have breakfast at a local restaurant then head for the city. By the time we reach the cable-car station, however, a couple of the members of our party are feeling quite ill. ... read more

On the road at 7:30. Kobus, whom we met our first day here, is subbing for JP as our driver and tour guide today. It is a beautiful day once again, and we have an ambitious schedule ahead. We drive directly to the Waterfront. Again trouble finding a parking spot in the garage, probably because of Mothers' Day. They have an interesting innovation in this parking garage. Each spot is monitored by a detector, and a red or green light indicates whether the spot is taken. So you can scan your eyes around the garage, looking for green lights. In addition, the data is rolled up and displayed at every intersection; e.g., 5 spots available to the left, 19 to the right. And outside on the street before you enter the garage, you can see before ... read more

Pickup at 7:30. It is another glorious day of sunshine without a cloud in the sky. We drive down to Camp's Bay, the area we previously visited on the tour bus. This is one of the more exclusive addresses in town, where beautiful homes sit perched on rocky cliffs. We have breakfast at a little restaurant on the main drag near the beach from which we can watch people walking their dogs and jogging by against a backdrop of rolling surf. Our first stop of the day is a zoo called the World of Birds. We stroll through a seemingly endless succession of outdoor cages, some open to the sky and some not, depending on the bird. The variety is incredible and the bird sounds blend into a constant cacaphonic backdrop. Some other animals are represented, ... read more

Today is all about the wine! We get under way at 7:30 and head to a nearby winery called Durbanville Hills for breakfast. We are seated on an outside patio with a great view of the surrounding area. I have eggs Benedict again, but this time with springbok carpaccio. After breakfast we take a stroll outside along manicured paths that feature indigenous plants. One of these is an unassuming little ground plant called fynbos, which is apparently unique to the Cape Town microclimate. (Yesterday we saw handicrafts made from it.) We are up fairly high and the air is crisp and clear. Around us on three sides are rolling hills spotted with low vegetation and the occasional tree bent by the cool winds from the Atlantic. We can see Table Mountain clearly in the distance with ... read more
