Up until now, the enchanting landscapes that are synonymous with Capetown and it's surrounding coastline, had been hidden from us, due to steady rain and fog. Part of me was actually quite fine and content with the fact that it was raining again during our stay; Capetown is enduring one of the worst droughts in it's history, so every drop was very much needed. There has been so much speculation about "day zero" this year; the day that all taps will get turned off. Many water restrictions have been in place for months now. But the weather reports seem to point optimistically at the chance that they may get the rainfall they need by winter... only time will tell. We all hope that this beloved city will recover from this crisis soon. It has definitely been ... read more

Val and myself flew from Manchester, in the UK to South Africa with Swiss Air via Zurich. After an overnight flight we had super views of Table Mountain as we landed in Cape Town. Our airbnb accommodation was in a good location in Newlands. We had a family meet up at the airport with Martin and Gemma from Brisbane, Australia and Paul and Beth from Bath, UK and collected 2 hire cars. Cape Town was in the midst of a severe water crisis and we had to have short showers standing in plastic bowls so that we could reuse the water for toilet flushing. After settling into our accommodation the next day we set off on a tour of the Cape of Good Hope. Starting at Muizenberg then on to visit the penguin colony at Boulders ... read more

I hardly ever sleep well the night before a trip. The excitement still keeps my adrenaline pumping all night long, as well as the fear of not waking up in time to catch an early AM flight. I toss and turn the whole night, and the minutes pass by so slowly. I stare out into the darkness, wishing I could just skip ahead and be at my destination already, with no hiccups. You spend months preparing all the details of your trip: flights, transportation, itinerary, even clothes. And then the moment finally comes, which seems to catch me by surprise... that moment when you are merely minutes from take off. There's also the looming question, "Will my trip live up to my expectations?" Although this particular trip was really high on both our bucket lists, my ... read more

Here we are, the last entry of an amazing three weeks trip. We have picked up Tiffany at the airport and are staying four nights in Cape Town. Golf wise, I ended up playing two more courses around the city. The first one was the very welcoming, but mainly average course of Durbanville. I finised my last round at Steenberg at the foothills of vineyards. Course at Steenberg is gorgeous...andonce I was done with the golf, it was a short drive next door to visit the Winery. They do have some pretty stunning Sauvignon Blanc...but not only. I did come back with some more Semillon and a red Barollo style...truly special! Tanya and Tiffany spent a morning visiting Robben Island while I was playing golf at Steenberg. They are lucky as the boats has had many ... read more

After a very intermittent night's sleep the wind was still howling. It's a South Easterly which apparently is renowned in Cape Town for occasionally being really strong and is the prevailing wind for the region. It really shook everything in the city but everyone seemed to be treating this as quite normal. Eventually throughout the day the wind started to subside. I decided to look for a tourist information office and quickly found one in the centre of the city. There I discovered that the best way to get around and have some guided sight seeing is on the open top double decker city tour buses. Just up the road from the tourist information was the main office of the company that runs the tour buses. I decided to go for a 2 day ticket covering ... read more

After a reasonable night's sleep I woke to a very cloudy and overcast Cape Town. At least the rain had stopped. After my usual process for waking up, make a cup of tea, read the news on the BBC website, check out what stupid posts have been put on Facebook, have a look at Instagram, I went down and had an excellent coffee in the hotel restaurant. I spent half an hour with my nose in one of the many books that I'd brought with me. Since I was on my own for 9 days I thought I'd make the most of the opportunity to read. The book I had started was How To Stop Time. I found it fascinating and difficult to put down. I just can't imagine where writers get these amazing ideas for ... read more

Well, the time had come. All the packing had been done, bag weighed, unpacked and excess bits taken out, repacked, duplicate stuff taken out, packed again. Then bits I had forgotten were added. That is the way with packing! Finally the time came to throw the bags in the car and get going. Miraculously I actually left on time which was slightly surprising. The trip to New Haw in Surrey was easy. I left the car there and my brother Dave very kindly gave me a lift about 6pm to Heathrow airport via an almost miraculously empty M25. I arrived at terminal 2 and panicked. Had I forgotten something? I must have done. In my panic I went through the security checks, then realised that I hadn't checked in my bag so had to talk my ... read more

Nukuin klo 8.30 asti. Illaksi mentiin De Waterkantin alueelle. Kuohuviiniä juhlapäivän kunniaksi. Illallinen Cubaña-nimisessä baarissa. Siellä oli kivan monikulttuurista menoa, väki pääosin mustaa ja värillistä.... read more

I'm not going to write about Cape Town, because I have too much to say. I wouldn't know where to begin, and if I did begin I might never stop. In 31 years and 33 countries, it’s the greatest city I’ve seen. My boyfriend and I had been living and working in Cape Town for 3 months. Both of us would trade our London lives for this city in a heartbeat, but despite an understaffed healthcare system, as foreign doctors it’s incredibly difficult to find employment here. We’d been volunteering at a hospital in the notorious Khayelitsha township, but indefinite volunteering is not sustainable, and our visa wouldn’t allow us to work, even unpaid, for any longer. The time had come to move on. We were left with 4 weeks before our flight home, and a ... read more
