After riding a bus for over 12 hours from Valencia, I was still not in Tarifa. I arrived at a town called Algeciras, where I needed to go to another bus stop and take another bus. Luckily, the other bus stop was not very far from the one where I was dropped off. Algeciras was another port town near the southern point of Spain. I might have opted to stay there when planning my route, because ferries left for Tangier from there as well, but there were not as many hostels available as in Tarifa. Tarifa was a short 45 minute bus ride, and I only paid 2.10 EUR for the trip. Once I arrived in Tarifa, the first thing I noticed was all the surf shops. I found my hostel and talked to some people ... read more

Am in my first African city and already found somewhere I dont want to leave. Tangier has been great, a lot of that thanks to Zakaria who ive stayed with since the second day i was here. He lives in a 'public neighbourhood' outside of downtown and it is full 'real' i.e. non Europeanized Moroccon culture, and he is a musician who plays with a group that does weddings and parties. There were two weddings yesterday and i was able to take part in both (sorry no pics because would have felt weird with a camera). In the first the groom was from Marrakesh and so the ceremony was slightly different than the Northern Moroccon traditions. Basically we (the musical group) went to the grooms house and danced, sang and played drums, cymbols and trumpets. Then ... read more

MEKNES Day 25 Arrived in Meknes at 3am. Got a train to Tangier. Train broke down and was changed to a bus. Bus broke down and had to stand outside from 4am-6am waiting for a new bus. Trust me, the last place I wanted to be was standing outside of a bus at 4am amidst a bus full of angry arab men. It was not a pretty sight and so I decided the best place to stand was behind the security guards. The new bus finally arrived and the angry men filed on. Bus finally arrived in Tangier at 9am. Dashed to the port to catch first ferry at 10am. Got on ferry at 9:30 but ferry never left until 1pm!!!!! Finally arrived in Algeciras at 5pm to find out that the train line from ... read more

Nothing like getting up at 5 AM. Normally you'd have to drag me out of bed at that hour, but not yesterday. Ok, I didn't jump right out of bed, but I got up without fighting (much). Now what would get us up that crazy early? AFRICA! We took a bus down to Tarifa. Beautiful drive, our guide gave us lots of insight into the history of spain/ southern spain that is. He told us of the years when Arabic kings ruled this coastal province. 2 hours into the drive we came to the old city, there to board a high speed ferry over to Tangier (14 km away), in Morocco. It was a rocky rugged trip as the boat sway back and fourth in the misty morning, we passed the rock of Gibraltar as the ... read more

We were recommended by a fellow camper to visit a little town called Ronda which is dramatically perched on a rugged hill. It was well worth the visit as the new bridge C.1754 (see picture)connects the town across a fissure in the rock on which Ronda sits. Just a few kilometres outside Ronda are the Pileta caves where we had a guided tour which was conducted by giving out some kerosene lamps to help light the way, this gave the event an atmosphere like something out of journey to the centre of the earth, as some of the caves were up to 30 metres high with bats on the ceiling and spectacular stalagmights/stalagtights drenched in the shadows of the lamps. We crept along narrow passageways connecting the cave system. At one point I could swear I ... read more

Oct 29 So today we headed to Amado after breaky. It was a west facing beach break just south of carapeteria.  It had a nice right hander off the north side of the beach and left hander off he south side. We opted for the right hander when we got there however after about ten mins it shut down there was a huge rip that pulled right through it. So we went to shore to reassed and decided to try the left. We both got some good waves nothing epic or legendary but a really fun beach break and it would barrell on the inside, whether you'd make it or not is a different story but it was good fun. This beach was set back in a cove surrounded by red rock cliffs. So it gave ... read more

This town didn't leave much of an impression on me, but it was a good intro to Morocco. Really, aside from the Alchemist-driven romance of crossing the strait from Tarifa to Africa, there is no reason to take the ferry here unless you are going to spend some time in the very north of Morocco. I spent 30 dollars on the boat ride to Tangier and then took a night train to Marrakesh; this took a full day of my time and cost about 50 dollars overall. On the way back to Europe, I flew from Marrakesh to Barcelona for twenty dollars. Search discount airlines to get you right to the heart of Morocco -- Marrakesh.... read more
