Just a quick disclaimer. My laptop died a quick and hopefully painless death last night. Blue screen of death and nothing I can do. At least there is a hotel computer tonight, but not really holding my breath for the rest of the trip. Today was such a waste. I had arranged a taxi to meet me at the hotel at 6 so I could make my 7:30 ferry to Spain. True enough, he was there at 6, we were at the Port Med by 6:45, but the ferry office wasn't open. The weather had stopped ferries from going, or Life was just messing with me yet again. The ferry finally left at 10:30. Easy peasey. Was in Spain by 1:30, made it through passport control and headed off to find the car rental. Ok, so ... read more

I decided to take an earlier train to Tangier today. It was going to be a 5 to 6 hours trip: therefore, I wanted to get it out of the way and enjoy an afternoon in Tangier. I grabbed the quick breakfast that was included with the room, hopped in a Deathtrap (Petit Taxi and yes, this one fit the description to a T) and off we lurched to the train station. I splurged on a first class ticket so I could have some quiet in which to read. It was only 185 Dirhams (divide by 8 for an estimate what it was in American dollars.) The trip was smooth and rather uneventful. Several people came and went from my compartment, but it was a quiet ride. I was thrown for a loop though when I ... read more

Tangier, Tanger or Tinker...it all flies. I was really excited to get into Africa - a brand new continent! I was also looking forward to seeing Tanger, despite the warnings about crime that I had heard. A few days before arriving, they had the February 20th protests - I got in on the 26th - but these were just for one day, and were mostly non-violent (5 people died in one town, but the people here told me that it was more gang-related that relating to the protests; hooligans just take advantage of these situations sometimes). Due to these factors, I was a little wary. After the first night, I knew it was actually totally fine. My advice to anyone coming to Morocco via ferry from Algeciras or Tarifa is to spend a couple of nights ... read more

Living on the Costa – Part 4 Tuesday 18th – Thursday 20th January 2011 Africa ! Being so close to another continent proved too tempting and we signed up for ‘Bill’s bargain basement Tangier Tour’. A cabopino contingent of ten brave souls – destination Africa ! A three day two night excursion to the Moroccan city of Tangier. Day one – up before time began to catch a coach on the main road and off to the port of Tarifa to catch the fast ferry across the straits of Gibraltar. A free tour of the city and its environs ( with the day trippers ) this was a whistle stop tour including a camel photo opportunity, royal summer residence, kasbar, snake charmers and the souk ( ‘selected establishments’). As we appeared to be the only tourists ... read more

Apologies for not writing for a while; I've been so busy lately its crazy! Last weekend a group of my friends & I decided to take a weekend trip to Tangier- a city on the Mediterranean Sea. So after class on Friday we hopped in a cab to Meknes (a town maybe 40ish minutes away) & proceeded to make our way to Tangier by train. The ride was so much better than my initial train ride into Fes; we took pictures, danced silly, & had a lot of fun just hanging out. By the time we pulled into the train station in Tangier it was really late. We met two more friends at the station & set off to find a place to sleep. Unfortunately our cab driver dropped us off at the wrong place & ... read more
