Ever since I heard the haunting lyrics and music of Donovan's song "Tangier", I have wanted to go there, and now, here I was! I had been thinking about going to Morocco for a while, as I had been already to Turkey, and Egypt, and I had enjoyed them both. I really enjoyed going to Muslim countries and talking with people of that faith, coming to a better understanding of them and hopefully helping them to come to a better understanding of Americans in general and of me in particular. Then my best buddy and I both saw "The Bourne Ultimatum" and the scenes where Matt Damon was zipping around Tangier on a moped, and we discussed how cool that would be. So, we decided to go to Morocco and see for ourselves. I found a ... read more

I have discovered that waking up at 6 AM is always a mistake. The idea, originally suggested by Abdullah of Auberge de Jeunesse, was to catch the 6:50 train to Tangier so that we could arrive by midday. This turned out to be foolish, as even though we managed to catch the train we were so exhausted by the time we reached Tangier that after finding a hotel, the "Promenade Palace," we turned in until 6 pm. The one good thing that came out of the whole affair was the sight of Venus in the morning sky, closely conjuncted with another planet (Saturn?) near the crescent Moon. If the moon were only on the other side of these two stars, I would have had a very nice approximation of the symbol of Islam, on a Friday ... read more

We woke early to get picked up at 7:05 for our tour of Tangier, Morocco. It was nice to be part of a tour as they bypassed some of the entry and control checkpoints boarding the ferry that everyone has to go through. The 40 minute ferry ride (catamaran fast ferry) was a bit up and down as the seas were a little rough. However, we arrived in Tangier with no one getting seasick. Whew! We started with a bus tour of the different sections of Tangier. Tangier was an internationally controlled city for much of the 20th century so that definite sections were historically populated by French, Spanish, English and Americans. We were surprised to learn that several celebrities have second residences in Tangier. There certainly are some large large villas in the nicer parts ... read more

Ola! I miss you all! I am in Seville, Spain currently, but am leaving tomorrow for ..........................................................................................................Morocco, Africa!!!!! I have officially lost it. I met Bruno, from Switzerland, at a bus station in Seville and he has convinced me to travel with him to Morocco tomorrow.......we are taking a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar in the afternoon and will be in Tangier by nightfall. Crazy. I am pretty (well, really) nervous about it, but I had been debating going and now I have a French speaking companion, so I hope we can be safe...... By the way, Seville is beautiful!! Looks just like its "sister city"--Kansas City!! Andy ... read more

I usually associate Star Wars fans with spotty teenagers, balding middle aged men and other stereotypical geeks at giant convention centres in first world countries. Apparently, I'm wrong. The biggest Star Wars club seems to exist in Morocco, judging by the fraternity of Obi Wan we infiltrated deep in the Tangier medina. These fans are so dedicated that they wear Obi Wan couture 24/7. Admittedly the jellaba looks quite comfy and you could be wearing just about anything underneath and still get away with it in public. Still, the pointy hooded, brown-robed look seems less like traditional Moroccan dress and far more like rabid Star Wars fan attire. Although unsurprisingly the older Moroccan men who tend to wear the jellaba don't seem quite so spotty, balding or geeky. In fact, they look quite dignified sipping ... read more

to all my avid readers i finally have a new installment. im down in morocco at a place called tangier. its up in the north of the country if u r scrambling for an atlas. its so different to europe, but i love it! it reminds me of egypt, but without the bus loads of tourists. our accomdation is cheap, translation_maybe not to the standard of australia. it took me about 10 mins to flush the toilet before. the ppl seem nice, im travelling with a girl from uni sarah. so it will be interesting to see if she still likes it here when we leave. so dont il recap my trip since san diego. flew to washington, which i once again loved as i dont follow politics a little and loved going to the white ... read more

Born in the old town of Tangier called medina in 1304(contemporary of Marco-Polo), he left the town at the age of 21 and return back at his 50s.When he came back he didn’t bring gold or precious stones, but a memory of his trip around the world during 3 decades, telling us in his book called (Rihla), (travels) about the religions, customs and mysteries of the territories he visited, which correspond actually to 44 countries and a route of 120000 km.
