After all the temples, tombs and pyramids we needed another time out and headed for the Sinai and the Red Sea. It’s not really around the corner and we spend 18 hours in an overnight bus. Wasn’t that back as I donned on my eye mask, put in the ear plugs and blew up my inflatable travel pillow. Travelling in style... Dahab has the dubious fame of being Sinai’s backpacker friendliest town and a great place to relax and spend more time than intended. Who are we to argue against this and we stayed longer than intended. That had not much to do with Dahab itself but with me and the cold that I got from one of the Japanese guys on the Felucca. I tended to the bed and discovered the joys of 8 hours ... read more

I've only just realised how long it's been since I've updated, I haven't covered Alexandria or the desert safari, let only Dahab and the Red Sea! So, I am going to make this update probably in dribs and drabs or it will all take far too long a post. First - the really bad news. My camera is broken, in a serious way :( It got dropped in Luxor, then taken away for fixing in Cairo for over 3 weeks before it was returned to us with a "sorry we can't fix it". I emailed Kodak UK and they said, basically, "It'll cost 90 quid to fix it or you can buy a new camera." We are still checking out our options but it means we are very much lacking the fantastic pictures we should have ... read more

Well, a week since my last update, and what an amazing one its been! So i finally left Cairo to begin my tour. First stop was the Baharia Oasis in the western desert. This is actually quite a massive area, like the size of a large ... read more

All calamities happen in threes.. Day 17 - I think I may be in Egypt!! Our itinerary said that today would be dedicated to solely getting across the Border from Jordan to Egypt - And it wasn't an exaggeration.... We were originally given an 11am departure time to catch the ferry across the red sea to Egypt. This soon changed to 1pm as we sat at the Jordanian Border waiting to cross. We stood waiting at Border control as our Jordanian agent handled the necessary paperwork to process our visas. Standing around watching the scene unfolding before me was like watching scenes from a commodities trading floor just before closing time - all awash with yelling men, standing with arms raised holding various bits of papers, passports and forms whilst huddled in front of a ... read more

Hi everybody, we have now come to the end of our time in Egypt. Since our last post we grabbed an overnight bus from Luxor to the Sinai peninsular, stopping initially at Sharm El-Sheikh to look into some diving options for Simon. We heard that Sharm was a bit of a strange place, being the Russian package tourists beach resort of choice. We were certainly not disappointed in this as we found everything really overpriced and overrun by hordes of heavy and pale Russians. We stayed at the cheapest place that we could find as most accommodation in town was at least US$70+ a night, leaving us sleeping in a straw hut on the top of a cliff at Shakes Bay just outside of town. Simon's main reason for stopping there was to complete some dives ... read more

After our first sleep in and another non-breakfast box breakfast we spent today relaxing and snorkeling in the Red Sea - just beautiful!. Dinner was at a place called the “Funny Mummy” which is filled with lots of cats - so many cats we were given water pistols to chase them away! No sleep for us tonight as we leave at 11.30pm to travel to Mt Sinai which is a 2 hour drive west of Dahab and then about a 2 ½ to 3 hour climb to the peak to watch the sunrise tomorrow morning followed with yet another breakfast box waiting for us at the bottom! We managed to get sleep on the bus before we got to Mt Sinai - the proposed site of the 10 commandments. After meeting our Bedouin guide who was ... read more

Up early again and had breakfast with Matt, Kat and Derek who appear to be the other early risers before we head off to Dahab. Our departure was delayed somewhat as there were quite a few sore heads after the farewell drinks last night. The bus ride was one of most uncomfortable for the trip as we were in quite a small bus on perhaps the bumpiest road in Egypt with the craziest Egyptian behind the wheel. If we thought that driving in Cairo was bad it was nothing compared with letting them loose on the highway. We were doing at least 140 km/h on a road that in Aus would be rated for 80. After 8 hours on the bus we arrived in Dahab. What a beautiful place. Our hotel is the nicest so far ... read more

OK so we are now in Duhab Egypt on the Red Sea coast of the Sinai desert. We got a nice hotel and this place is really a nice place to kick back but we only have two days. Yesterday on the ferry our brand new camera quit so hopefully we can figure that out. More later.... read more

Hey all, Well, Drea and I have pretty much run out of our travel budget, so we've decided to end our trip and head home. Europe was just too expensive with the weak dollar and high European Union prices. We have had a great trip, though, and I've seen all the big historical sites that I wanted to see. We also got in a lot of scuba diving here in Dahab, and that has been awesome. I've definitely been bitten by the diving bug and will have to keep it up when we get back. We head home this Saturday, August 9, and will spend a couple days in LA before heading to Las Vegas to get our cars. From there we'll head to San Diego to find a place to live and jobs so we can start ... read more

Hola amigos, I know it's been a while since I rapped at ya... (probably only Matthew gets that joke) Seriously though, I know I haven't updated in a while, but we've been pretty busy sightseeing in Egypt and fast internet connections are not exactly easy to find around here. The one I'm currently on isn't terribly fast, so we'll see how many pictures I get uploaded. Ok, well I just uploaded a few photos and it took forever so now I'm tired of being at the computer. I'll give a quick rundown of our travels now and then flesh things out later. Last of Greece We spent one more week in Greece, on the island of Crete. We checked out some museums and ancient sites, went to a water park (which was awesome fun!) and spent ... read more
